I started hearing loud fan like noise today. Anybody with ideas? it stayed on for a bit after the car was turned off. I usually wouldn't mind lil bit of fan noise.. but this was horrific loud.. I'm guessing I just need to replace the fan. Any ideas?

If you can, take a video, that may help us at least get a better idea of what you are talking about. I just recently replaced my fan clutch that was bad, and sounded a lot like a diesel!!!

While it's parked and with the engine running, really take a good look in the bay to see if you can possible see where the noise is coming from. It took me awhile to chase my noise down.

If it that is your noise, it may sound like a vacuum cleaner or jet engine depending how bad the SAI Pump is. If you determine that is the noise, you'll want to follow the hoses that come off of it to inspect for damage.

I have put up a video of the loud fan. I think it's the Engine Coolant Temperature sensor.

You are probably going to want it to NOT be a coolant sensor.... Unless you already know the cost of one for the W8....
I don't know how it would make noise though...

E code, I'm Pretty sure it's the engine coolant temperature sensor. Failed ECT sensor will make the radiator fans to run at maximum capacity. The noise I hear is my fans running way too hard. I'm not worried about the repair cost. Repair cost on the Passat is nothing compared to repair/maintenance cost on my Phaeton. I also have a extended warranty on the W8.

Sorry - missed the part of the fan running hard.... yeah, that would likely be the ECT then - I thought we meant the sound was coming from the ECT itself somehow.... sometimes my brain doesn't work right... lol...

TWO V8 VW's!!! You are just a glutton for punishment!

I haven't driven the W8 since the Super Fan action. I don't have a CEL on the gauges. Should the fan act up like that with out the Check Engine Light?
