My old S, miss it quite a bit. Oh well, 964 next.
Is there a list somewhere of the minor changes in each year for the US market? Like which year got the glass window, the 2.2L engine, and all the tiny changes they did here and there. I'm halfway tempted to pick one up again. The last time I had an S2000 I paid $20K for a 2001 and found out afterwards it had been in a wreck so I dumped it right away and didn't look back. Prices have come down a lot since then and I'm starting to wonder if I should try it again.
04 = AP2 changeover. Engine is 2.2 l, tweeters are added for the sound system. Interior has a slight redesign.
06 = drive-by-wire and stability control is added. Smallish speakers added on to the roll bars. Some other interior stuff is changed, but it's really minor stuff.
08= CR model is added. if you want the rawness of the AP1, but AP2 looks, this is the model to get. It doesn't have a soft-top, but one can be added easily (but it will be manual operation only)
Also the suspension has been changed up within the years, but I personally don't think it's that significant.

I know the 04+ are the F22 powered AP2 with a slightly differnt door sill, front, and rear bumpers, and the optional CR package. Pre 04 with the smaller F20 are considered the more desireable ones by tuners due to the 9000 rpm redline in comparison to the (IIRC) 8000 rpm in the F22. All s2000s are push start standard factory OE, convertible, manual trans only, and digital readout gagues.
Now I'm rambling, and I dont even own one... Just drove several dozen when I used to do inspections... S2000 owners chime in and correct my wrong spots!!
The s2ki.com forum is quite comprehensive on all things S2000. If you read the FAQ and other stickies at the top of that forum you'll get all the info you'll ever need. Here is a short version of differences between the AP1 and AP2 S2000 (USA models), there are other items that changed through the run, but here are the basics:
- model year 2000 thru 2003
- 2.0 liter engine (F20C)
- 9k redline
- stock 16 inch wheels
- plastic rear window in 2000 and 2001 (glass in '02 onward)
- model year 2004 thru 2009
- 2.2 liter engine (F22C - slightly higher torque, slightly different gearing)
- 8k redline
- stock 17 inch wheels
- revised suspension for "better/safer" handling (*subjective and endlessly debatable)
- revised front and rear bumpers
- 2006 introduction of drive-by-wire (DBW) throttle and VSA - vehicle stability assist.
- 2008 introduction of CR (club racer)
The AP1/AP2 debate is never ending, everyone has their reasons why one is better. If you get the best maintained, lowest mileage example that fits in your budget. You can't go wrong with any well maintained S2000.
My bitch -
They are a lot of fun and truly feel special.
EDIT: S2ki.com is the place to go, if one is really interested to learn more about this car. This car is not for everyone, its small and pretty loud and requires driver involvement to get the most of out of it. On top of that, many people hate on it without ever really driving it (I guess that's the way it goes for a lot of cars though).

Looking to get a CR in the near future as a weekend car. I'd love to find a Grand Prix White but Apex Blue will do. These are hard to come by, but for the $$ and reliability--its the perfect car for weekends and driving enjoyment!!
