S2000's have been my absolute favorite car since I sat in one at a dealership when I was 13. Now that you can find them pretty cheap I'm thinking about making the move sometime next year.

      Some of my favorites

Not many more S2000 worthy days left. I'll be driving mine every nice day until it is time to put it away for the winter. Always brings a smile to my face.

So I'm at my local Honda dealership last Sat and in the ~4 hrs I'm there (buying a new car), I'd guess that 3-4 different guys took serious looks at a used S2K on the lot. It went out on several test drives too, got tons of attention.
I asked my sales guy, who has been there 15+ yrs, "seems like that S2000 is getting a lot of attention" and he replies, "It's funny, we've had that used S2K in for less than a week and it's gotten more serious looks and phone calls than the last 2 new ones we had in the showroom that sat idle for over 6 months each, we couldn't give those cars away when they were new, now we'll sell used ones in record time".

Go figure...you never know what you have until it's gone.

Put on 17k miles since May feels like I'm beating up the car, but I did buy it to drive it every day.

is there a consensus on where the bottom is for the s2000? I assume these cars will bottom out around 7k, then climb until they're no longer affordable.. I missed the days of $10k NSXs, and I don't want to miss the S2000 having learned my lesson.

I've asked myself the same question and have pretty much decided that it'll be my toy car. I am hoping to pull the trigger sometime next spring/early summer. Yes the prices may adjust for the season, but seeing as how used prices are at historic highs, I'm hoping its a wash when it comes time to buy.

I've been toying with the idea of picking up an AP1 when I visit the inlaws in Florida in March. I'd rather get a clean, salt free car considering I'll plan on keeping the thing forever. That, and because they are more common down there the prices seem to be about $1K less than up in CT.

My opinion is that for a clean, stock S2000 with lowish mileage will bottom out around $9 - $10K.

Sure, maybe you can scoop one up for $7K but it won't be a 9/10 and it won't be stock or it may need work (softop, clutch, very worn seats etc)

I'm less interested in a pristine example, and more interested in a decent runner as a weekend toy. Looks like I should start saving again... not sure how the wife will feel about me having two new-ish cars to her still running '96 college car.

Anything less than 10k is going to be clapped out, or super high mileage unless you run into someone that just wants a quick sale and doesn't care about the price. I got my AP2 for $16k, but in it's condition it could have easily sold for $20k.

Oh and if you want white, be prepared to pay top dollar for it. For some reason white is in high demand.

Current pricing? You won't find a clean, low miles example for $10k. Maybe in a few years.

As far as $7k goes - it's not going to be anywhere near 9/10. It's going to be a salvage titled car, or as you said, one that needs quite a bit of work.

No, not current pricing. I paid around $14K for my 40,000 mile AP1 over the summer, and its very close to mint. If I meant current pricing I would have to kick my own ass.

I mean in 2 - 5 years from now. I think the bottom hasn't hit yet, and most reasonably clean AP1's with lowish mileage go for $11K - 15K right now. I'm thinking the prices will still drop just a bit from where they are at now.

There are tons of variables, it's just an educated guess. Someone may get lucky and steal one from someone in financial distress, who knows..

The way they are holding up over the years and miles, and how well it is obviously built, I wouldn't bet on prices going too much further from where they are now. I read on S2ki.com the other day that someone hit 300,000 miles in his AP1, pretty cool if you ask me for a sports car with little or no maintenance out of normal scheduled wear and tear.

doubtful. the cheapest decent 00-01 depending on your location with under 100k will be 10-11k. a nice condition ap1 that is a later model that needs nothing/lower mileage (under 60k) will be 13-15k. i paid 13k for my 03 with 41k, clean/no accidents, and no issues - with two sets of wheels. it was a good price...these cars aren't exactly dime a dozen in the midwest.

Which is why, while I'm not into them, I suspect we're seeing the bottom of the market now. I don't think they're going to go lower than this since, unlike the Miata, there isn't a steady stream of newer cars coming to depreciate the nice but older cars. I don't think someone would regret getting one at current prices, but I think they might regret waiting a couple of years for them to go lower...
