I've been seeing them priced fairly reasonably lately and was thinking it would be a nice car to downsize into from the S60R. I'd imagine the fun quotient would be higher as would the MPGs.

What does one look for in these? Anything problematic across the entire range?

Why would you want a car like this these days? They're so dated and scream "i'm mostly poor"

You're a lawyer, it doesn't make sense for you to buy a cheapass semisport econohatch. You don't have to go all out 60k on yourself but jeez man, ****

Because some people can see a $5000 vehicle that's is fun and think, "Hmm, that could be fun."

OTOH, some people need $40,000 vehicles to make themselves feel relevant in today's society.

They're fun cars. I think I need to replace my engine mounts? It's been pretty problem free over the 4 years I've owned it though.

Oh finance lounge....Just because you make money doesn't mean you need to spend money.

      The SVTs are nice.
Off the top of my head, I think they had some issues with the transmission and CEL for cam sensors...
I've always lusted after one with a JRSC.

6 speed getrag not so reliable. Needs moar SVT Contour.

The 05 regular focus with the 2.3L Duratec is pretty quick and responds to mods well. Better than the SVT 2L. Just really hard to find one with a manual.

rynodyno312: Just curious, but what makes it a "controversial" engine?
Fritz27: The LS7 made some anti-Semitic remarks back in 2008. Look it up.

CSVT still on the list... What's with the Getrag? I would be leaving it completely 100% stock (no power boost of any kind).

I loved mine - the dealer was god awful - but the car overall was great (back in '03)

That said, my clutch exploded and was replaced under warranty - later on, Ford issued a recall on the clutch...

Probably because the SVT outhandles any sporty compact you can buy "these days."

And with only 170hp you'll be outhandling other cars in their rearview

No obvious engine problems to worry about. Typical of early 2000s Ford, the interior is a bit low rent and the dashboard will crack under intense SoCal sun.

But it's hella fun car to drive around town. Look for the later model with Euro appearance package.

My Russian friend Igor has one. I helped him find it. It doesn't idle too well and likes to eat alternators and idle control valves. However, handling and stopping in it is an absolute blast and we use it weekly to go get drunk in random Long Island pubs. He is an MD/PHD so i feel like somewhere there should be a Russian lawyer driving one to balance out the universe...

      Edited for more info:
      1. According to his super geeky log he averages 26.8mpg running premium.
      2. Clutch had to be replaced around 38K miles due to possible miss use by the PO.
      3. I had to put correct plugs in since most mechanics will just slap in some regular Focus plugs causing the car to have flat spots all over the powerband.
      4. AEM intake and Magnaflow cat back make it sound great without being overly obnoxious.
      5. 6 speed transmission is pretty smooth and fun IMHO.
      6. Car is mostly trouble free and holds pretty decent resale value now that they have bottomed out on the used market.

Are you sure you're ok? Why would someone want to go from a S60R to a ford fucus in any trim level? Keep the R you'll be far happier in the long run

I'm probably biased. But seriously more safety, refinement and luxury while still maintaining a sporty ride. Although I was never keen on newer Volvos.

Vad's Volvo has none of those things.

I think it's because the S60R gets 2 mpg and is slower than a Camry V-6

Although cars are the worst investment, i recommend you spend at least 40 k on something right now

I too am in the market for one. Too bad finding one that isn't flogged or a "Pep BoyZ" special here in Connecticut has proved to be somewhat impossible. Great car though, too bad they only made something like 3000 of them

Good luck in your search !

And now I know why I don't come to TCL anymore.

I was in the market for one of these before I slummed it and went with a ZX3. It's pretty easy to find clean ones, just watch out for clutch/transmission issues. The clutch had a wonky dual-mass flywheel to smooth out vibrations but just kind of ate itself alive and broke over time, and the clutch master cylinder has a tendency to go out on all manual transmissioned Focuses.

I've had my 2002 ZX3 for 5 years and 50,000 miles (~130k on the odometer) and it's needed tires, fluids (it's needed them for a while ) new front struts because I broke the springs after parking it for a couple months, an oil pan (midwest winter), and the clutch cylinder is starting to leak a bit. Parts are relatively cheap and in good supply too.

Pretty dead nuts reliable vehicles...if you get a good one. Most of the kinks should have already shown themselves in pre-owned ones, so the risk, if any, is a bit lower than a couple years ago IMO.

      This /\

but, I thought the 2.3 duratec was only in 04? I had an 05 with the 2.0 Duratec and loved it. I always wished I had the 2.3 so I could add this

Back on topic, I think they are nice cars. Drive one around and see how you like it. I see them as a pretty good package for a pretty good price

stole those from another SVT focus thread.
