HOW TO: Passat B7 Rear View Camera Install

Thank you for posting all this great information. I just purchased a 2012 Passat TDI SEL and want to install this backup camera. The only part I'm having trouble finding is the Maloosheck wiring harness. I can't seem to find it anywhere. Where did you order this from or who did you contact to get it? I'd be grateful for any information you could pass along.

This too is on my project to do list..... or I may hold out for their highline camera where the lines move with the wheel. I know I want the RVC, and this looks like the easy and cheaper route.... I'm just undecided and low on time and money.... so it's on the bottom of the list.

Search here or YouTube videos... One has fixed grid lines to the rear only...the other has 'zones' that move with the vehicle and left right turns of the wheel.
As far as parts... Prob avail now just like any other retro fit... Just need the camera, control module (which this DIY for low does not require), harness to RNS, Cecm, Canbus, and power. Fit of the camera is the biggie... The Jetta sports wagon camera handle (low) fits. CC, Toureg, other cameras aren't as simple as a handle swap but a more custom install.

Awesome, thanks! I'm wondering if this project can be done without the Maloosheck harness? Do you have any thoughts here? I just talked to the guys at FirstPartsVW and they gave me part that they thought could work as a substitute 4E0-035-749-F. Do you know anything about this possible extra part?

Hi, This is my first project and I don't have the VCDS software. I notice that the micro-can cable is $250 an comes with activation. Does the VCDS software cost anything more to download or is it just the cost of the cable?

I know this setup activates the screen for the backup image when the car is put into reverse--is the screen/image activated even if the RNS-510 is turned off or does the RNS-510 have to be switched on for this backup camera setup to work?

The camera screen will appear whether the RNS is on or off.

works like a charm.....

The power wire harness.... well I made one on my own....
The ground and reverse light signal I just tapped in to the light right there on the trunk lid and my battery is in the trunk so i just ran a wire to that and added a fuse.....

DONE!!!

Did previous year Passat's, and Tiguan's for that matter have camera's that projected your path as you turned the front wheels or is it just fixed? I'm guessing since the steering is all electronic now that steering wheel position input is going to be in the ECM regardless. Would it be a different camera or VCDS option?

First of all thanks to everybody especially the OP for posting this. Once the car isn't weeks old, this is very much the first mod I want to do.

I had a not so small request, however. Would you mind keeping the OP updated with the best information as it becomes available/vetted? For example, the prospect of avoiding the CECM (with instructions/photos) nightmare would be very useful to include in the primary, and not buried in the thread.

Second request is, I'd be definitely willing to kick in a few buck for hopefully a pool of $$ to get a decent video of this mod made. Would the OP or other individuals be interested in this?

Mreuro..... any chance you can take pics of the trunk wiring. Shouldn't be too hard to pop that trunk cover off and snap away a few. Custom male connector too, or just pinned directly into the female connector that was part of the camera/handle piece.?

Also... anyone clip the plastic hanging off the wires into the trunk lid.... looks like there is reach and a circle groove in the trunk for it off the camera/handle end. Will take pics of what I am talking about when I can.

I just got my 2012 Passat SEL Premium this past weekend. I had a feeling they would add the rear view camera on the 2013's but couldnt wait. My 2004.5 Passat GLX was totaled out and I had no car so... I had limited time to get a new one. That's the ONLY thing this new car is missing IMO.

Any ideas how much this will be to have the dealer install after the fact on the 2012 Passat's?

They OP said $400 in parts for DIY but how many hours in labor as that is the main cost?

For example alarm PDF floating around was 1.9hr. 120-150per hour labor... Well you can decide what you are willing to spend. And less wire running and trim work on the alarm PDF I saw than in this DIY. Don't know if the dealer would tackle this mod unless a kit was put together from vw.... And there could be down the road with the add to MY13, but it may be the highline camera woth control unit.... Parts (and labor) are going to be more than the three parts used here. Another example....Their park dis kit... Labor again far outweighs the cost of the kit.

Unclear, no service dealer I've contacted is touching this based upon the OP instructions. I'm sure once VAG physically rolls out the 2013 series, they'll eventually start offering RVC as an installable option, but probably at a premium cost. Some other guys have had work done at the dealer, maybe they can comment on what they estimate the number of hours this would entail at a service dealer. It won't be cheap, I'm sure.

At this time, this appears to be a DIY only project. I couldn't even get indy's to reply to inquiries on doing this.

Dealerships will prob do it... If Vw come out with a kit not based on this DIY. It will prob be the highline w control module.... Parts + labor will far exceed this DIY or just getting it via a 2013 vs retro to a 2012. The labor cost is what will do ya in.

Other shops.... Might tackle this DIY more so than a dealer... Just make sure they are an vw/Audi specialist shop. I know in HI there is a non dealer called wrench works that is very familiar with VW and electrical.

Hey Guys-

I'm getting close to pulling the trigger on this mod and I had a few questions for those of you that have done it.

-Where does the non CECM end of Maloosheck harness plug into? The camera cable? the camera itself? The nav unit? Is it just a power and switched power cable? It seems that if the CECM is so hard to get to, you could run a fused power wire and tap into the reverse light line for the switch.

-Does anyone know if the part number of the new 2013 SEL back up camera is the same as the Jetta one mentioned in this mod? I'm wondering if it's a "new and improved" version.
