I presume the battery placement is where the TDI AdBlue tank is located.

It's on the left hand side of the trunk

mreuro... any pics to agument what is already here? Specifically the wiring to the trunk battery? Also still looking to see if anyone did this without going through the CECM. Or if the lines move with the steering wheel, or fixed.

Sorry for going offline for a bit. Got swamped the last 2 weeks.

Anyway -- Thanks for the kind words on the write up. I'd be glad to help anybody out, but no chance I would do this install unless I had to. The back pain from messing with the CECM for 2 hours was killer :-) Seriously though, I would help out anybody that is local or close.

      Part costs.
The custom harness was $65, the 5M1-970-161-AC video signal wire was $66 and the camera handle was $321. I ordered all from 1stvwparts.com and they were GREAT. Highly recommended. Actually I miss ordered the camera the first time and they took it back with no issues. My local VW dealer offered to get me one in 2 days for $20 over internet pricing, so I have to give credit to Evans VW in Dayton too.

The rest was all tool costs for things I didn't have yet, but nothing major.

The lines don't move (different camera and cable, and needs a control module) but I can tell you the first line is roughly 10" past your bumper.

Which camera is that? Would that w/ control module be able to go in a Passat?
I'm getting the Tiguan SEL soon.... hopefully it has the RVC, will have to see how it compares to the pictures and posts here about the JSW Handle camera.

Done! Great writeup, though the Amazon tweezers we're too big for their intended purpose. Regrettably, I ended up losing one of the metal fasteners from the trunk trim in the inside of the trunk lid. I'll fondly remember this project every time I open my trunk, and hear it rattling around.

I ran an auto-scan and had a bunch of issues - not sure how to handle. Any input is appreciated.

That is totally your call. Personally I had a few of those, and I cleared them out, but I was positive they were not there BEFORE the install, so I knew I caused them. And none of them have come back.

Some of those were there from factory it looks like (63km, 56km...)

If I remember correctly I had the airbag sensors tripped (and hence the Check Airbag light on), the window ones (Door Electric) and maybe a CECM as well.

Again, up to you if you want to reset or not.

I ran an auto-scan and had a bunch of issues - not sure how to handle. Any input is appreciated.

Same thing happened when activating the rain sensor for wipers and windows.

Thank you for posting all this great information. I just purchased a 2012 Passat TDI SEL and want to install this backup camera. The only part I'm having trouble finding is the Maloosheck wiring harness. I can't seem to find it anywhere. Where did you order this from or who did you contact to get it? I'd be grateful for any information you could pass along.

      Many thanks!

It was clickable here in this DIY on the first post?

      http://vagpartsforsale.blogspot.com/...agen-golf.html

Use the Kontact me link on his web blog. He got back to me in a few days.

This too is on my project to do list..... or I may hold out for their highline camera where the lines move with the wheel. I know I want the RVC, and this looks like the easy and cheaper route.... I'm just undecided and low on time and money.... so it's on the bottom of the list.

Thanks! I've sent him an email. I was just wondering if there was a way to get it online through immediate order.

What's the highline camera? Do you know when it's coming out for purchase? Will it work with all the other parts listed here?

Search here or YouTube videos... One has fixed grid lines to the rear only...the other has 'zones' that move with the vehicle and left right turns of the wheel.
As far as parts... Prob avail now just like any other retro fit... Just need the camera, control module (which this DIY for low does not require), harness to RNS, Cecm, Canbus, and power. Fit of the camera is the biggie... The Jetta sports wagon camera handle (low) fits. CC, Toureg, other cameras aren't as simple as a handle swap but a more custom install.

Awesome, thanks! I'm wondering if this project can be done without the Maloosheck harness? Do you have any thoughts here? I just talked to the guys at FirstPartsVW and they gave me part that they thought could work as a substitute 4E0-035-749-F. Do you know anything about this possible extra part?

      Many thanks!

Hi, This is my first project and I don't have the VCDS software. I notice that the micro-can cable is $250 an comes with activation. Does the VCDS software cost anything more to download or is it just the cost of the cable?

      Many thanks!

I know this setup activates the screen for the backup image when the car is put into reverse--is the screen/image activated even if the RNS-510 is turned off or does the RNS-510 have to be switched on for this backup camera setup to work?

      Many thanks!

The camera screen will appear whether the RNS is on or off.

Did previous year Passat's, and Tiguan's for that matter have camera's that projected your path as you turned the front wheels or is it just fixed? I'm guessing since the steering is all electronic now that steering wheel position input is going to be in the ECM regardless. Would it be a different camera or VCDS option?

Hi guys, this is my first post here. I am in the process of buying a 2012 passat TDI SEL. This rear view camera will be my first and immediate mod

Thanks to the threadstarter for posting this very useful information, however I have a couple questions that can hopefully be answered.

One thing I don't understand is where the plug end of the Maloosheck harness gets plugged into. I understand that it receives power and ground and the reverse sensing but where does the OTHER end go.. to the camera itself? This will probably be clearer once I receive my parts but I figure I'd ask.

My other question is, do they make a pin removal tool so that I don't have the same issue you did with the #28 wire? Can I avoid messing with the CECM all together by splicing the yellow wire into the reverse light right in the trunk?

      Thanks in advance

Yes you can.... Thats what I did..... I didnt run any wires to CECM at all... just tapped to the lights in the trunk lid and my battery is in the trunk so that was it.

First of all thanks to everybody especially the OP for posting this. Once the car isn't weeks old, this is very much the first mod I want to do.

I had a not so small request, however. Would you mind keeping the OP updated with the best information as it becomes available/vetted? For example, the prospect of avoiding the CECM (with instructions/photos) nightmare would be very useful to include in the primary, and not buried in the thread.

Second request is, I'd be definitely willing to kick in a few buck for hopefully a pool of $$ to get a decent video of this mod made. Would the OP or other individuals be interested in this?

      Thanks again!
