    Thread: S4 vs GTI?

    1. 11-22-2011 10:50 AM #1
I have a 2006 S4 now. Very happy with it. Stumbled by the dealership the other day to by wipers and spotted a very nice looking Grey 2012 VW GTI with the Autobahn package (like the new 2012 wheels) on the showroom floor. Loaded it's about $31k. Started to make me think whether a new car (with warranty) and better gas mileage with the GTI is something to think about.
Does anyone have both of these cars? Any comments on comparing the 2 as a daily driver? Handling, manual shifting, ride comfort, etc?
      Thanks in advance.

I don't own a B7 S4, but I think I've had enough driving time in one to give you some input.

I have a 4dr Autobahn which I absolutely love. I feel the back seats have about the same amount of room as the S4 does, obviously the trunk is larger than the GTI's hatch, but there's still plenty of room back there for most things people carry around with them, groceries etc.

As far as the drive, they're two completely different power deliveries. The gti has a lot of toque available at low RPM, making it great for city driving. The S4's power comes in much higher in the RPM range. You can certainly feel the weight of the S4 while cornering, and it is a very front-heavy car. In my opinion, the GTI is a bit more balanced and toss-able.

Ride comfort is great on the GTI, it's sporty enough in my opinion, without being overly harsh. The 18's with 225/40 tires aren't too forgiving, but the stock suspension takes bumps well without putting you to sleep. I would say that the ride comfort is on par with the S4's.

The GTI has a decent gearbox. The throws feel about the same length as the S4's and the clutch has about the same sort of feel to it. I definitely recommend driving one though, everyone's opinion is different.

there have been several people that came from M3's and S4's into GTI's here. Before i got my GTI was looking at used e46 m3's and im happy i never got one. Gas, maintenance would have just been a royal pita. If your ok ditching the quattro and power its a great car. Maybe wait for the Golf R? its got a little more kick and AWD. Theyll be starting at 32-34k iirc

Just sold my '00 Nogaro Blue B5-S4 in August and bought a '11 GTI, base, Carbon Steel Grey, DSG.

      Love it.

Kinda miss my S4, but I'm very happy with the GTI.

AWD vs FWD? New car vs old car? If it was me I would take Quattro but then again, I am somewhat biased.

My 1st cousin has a AE b7 S4. He loves it though he is constantly complaining about the poor gas mileage from that big V8. I've sat in the back of both my car and his and I have to say, it is very tight in the back of his. He took a drive in my car, he loves the power delivery and admits it pulls harder then his however he is an awd kind of guy. I think that's what it will come down to for you. Can you sacrifice the awd for fwd?

I've had both. A chipped GTI can be as satisfying as an S4 for half the cash.

I have an 09 S5 as well as a GTI and I can tell you I enjoy driving the GTI a lot more. You do sacrifice some details, especially the interior, but the GTI is so much lighter on its feet and fun to drive you don't miss them. If I had to drive one or the other exclusively it would be the GTI hands down.

I’ve had some seat time in the B7 S4 and well, its not as impressive as I’d thought it would be. Remember, the 335i is faster than that car. When I got back into my GTI, I greatly enjoyed the turbo and the steering and shifter feel compared to the S4’s bigger and “boatier” feel and sound. I haven’t driven the new S4, but I’m sure the driving experience is much more enjoyable based on the supercharged 6cyl, compared to the V8. But yeah, the B7 is baller and very comfy / fun to drive, but I love having the nice mpg, handling, power delivery/turbo in the GTI.

I miss my old B5 A4's quattro a lot, but that's about it. The GTI can't get the power down without spinning a tire- especially around a corner. Everything else about the GTI is better, and I love having a hatch vs trunk. With the S4 you'll eventually have to replace the timing chain guides too.

An S-line (4, 5, or 6) really doesn't make sense for a daily driver. I think those cars are better suited for sunny weekend drives.

      Go test drive that 2012!

S4 is an amazing car but it's heavy and very thirsty.

GTI is light on it's feet and more fun around town at sane legal speeds.

When I think B6 and B7 S4 I can't get this image out ofmy head.

I had a 05 b6 s4 and now have both a fehrenheit gli and a 2010 gti. The s4 was great, it felt heavy but the quattro made up for the weight once you had some seat time with some tire pressure adjustments. The gti out of the box is a must better performer, i have not changed the rear sway bar yet but everyone says that is a must. I would not buy another s4 because i spent most of my time with that car at the dealership or a gas station. Pull the trigger on the gti you won't miss the s4.

Or you can just buy a fairly used B8 S4. Absolutely love that car.

Love those too but if gas mileage is something you want to improve, the difference isn't that great with them. Not going to really find any under $40k either.
