Keeping my eye on this. I'm hesitating for 2 reasons:
      1. Proof of proper Haldex service for mileage.
      2. Finding a good donor motor vs. rebuilding this one. Donor motors would go for $3.5k-$4.5k and a used R in good mechanical shape and 127k miles should fetch $9.5k to $10k.

I need to do some research to see what's typically needed for a hydrolock rebuild. Probably top to bottom: polish head, valves, lifters, hone block, pistons, rods, balance crank. Assuming the head and/or block aren't permanently damaged.

The proof of purchase is on the cluster and on the carfax, why do you need a haldex service record for the proof of mileage?

Rebuilding this engine becomes a matter of personal preference. If you want to go all out and keep the car for the next ten yrs, or do a decent repair and keep it for the next year or two.

I havnt taken the motor apart yet, I'm sure rods are bent, maybe valves. Hopefully no cylinder wall damage.

I'm not sure what you are saying. I'd like to see receipts or service records that show the Haldex fluid and filter was replaced at the recommended service intervals. This is something that can be overlooked by unfamiliar owners.

I'm not questioning the actual mileage. High mileage + unmaintained AWD system = possible failure after spending $$$ to fix the motor.

im sorry i meant proof of mileage, i didn't get any of those records from the previous owner, im sure the dealer can provide that when giving them the VIN #. I do have the carfax, it has had some basic maintenance work done.

Ok awesome, dealer maintenance history would settle it! You still thinking about rebuilding it yourself?

I just had to add my .02. I cannot believe what people think their stuff is worth...

      KBB excellent is $10k

Hole in the bumper makes it at best 'very good' condition. $9800

Doubt infused by someone HYDROLOCKING the friggin ENGINE coupled with someone buying it as a project and giving it up before turning a wrench drops it to 'fair' condition. $8200 minus the cost of a swap: $4500.

That is what it's worth to someone with half a sense of fair value.

I have 2 mopeds and cash. Let's do this.
This signature option does me no good.

For your reference, the previous owner was a female, and the car had a cold air intake. So you must be a good estimator, building this motor would be around no more than $2500.00 by myself. And im not hesitant about turning the wrench, my wife just deleivered twin babies, so an R32 build is the least of my priorities. Unlike other immature car enthusiasts who would put a diaper on the haldex, I have bigger priorities. And if no one buys it, I really dont care, I still have an R, and I can still build it. Your talking about me overpricing this car, how about the regular jettas and gtis on this site, who put one turbo kit on it and want more than or around the price of an R. Anyway, im not into mopeds, no offense. If I sell this, I want to get a Q7, so I can put baby seats in them FYI.

Please ppl dont turn this into a ranting thread, if you want to write something like whats above, PM me. I will be more than happy to answer any question.

This thing has been for sale for two months now. If 7k was such a great deal, it would have been sold. If you consider lowering your price, let me know. I have cash and can grab this thing on my trailer.

So let me start off by saying, I AM VERY INTERESTED in this car AND have CASH, but 7k isn’t worth it and here is why:

      7,000 for your car
      4,300 for a used motor (http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthrea...ighlight=motor)
1,000 (MAF, tube, tune up parts, haldex service and other odds and ends to make it a legit driver)
1,500 to have it installed (it has to be 2 days (16 hours) of work @ ~$100/hour)
      ----------
13,800 to have your shell as a legit DD (and it has a salvaged/rebuilt title).

Why would ANYONE (not just me) pay that, go through the time to have the work done (or take the time to do it themselves) when they could buy something running for around or less that 13,800? Here are some of the cars for LESS money that are turn key (and I realize may need some money into them too and may not be PERFECT, but neither is the car you’re selling):

      http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthrea...North-Carolina)

      http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthrea...8185-FS-RS-r32

      http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthrea...R32-11-000-obo

LIKE I SAID, I am interested in this car and have cash and a trailer to drive it away but the price doesn’t make sense. Not to mention the title will be stamped “REBUILT”, so if I insure it and I get t-boned, I won’t get book value for the car.

It hasn’t sold because it is not a good value, not because people can’t come up with 7k. I’M SERIOUS, if you lower your price to be more reasonable, I WILL BUY THIS CAR and tow it away. And I live in CT, so I don’t have a long drive to Queens.

If you want to talk off line, PM me.

I appreciate your input, but at this time, the engine is taken apart already, im pulling the motor out tomorrow, and by the weekend its off to the machine shop.

I laugh every time I hear this line. R's don't sell too often at book value. It's just a stupid line that buyers try to use when trying to score a deal. Any R32 owner knows the real value. The same guy would be telling you an R32 is worth $15k the moment he owned one.

I really glad you are fixing this one. It was not going to sell at that price and I only say that since I have been doing this car stuff for 32 years. I was watching your sell thread and was very amused at the comments and was surprised it did not get worse.

I think when you are done you will have a great DD. it will still not get top dollar if you sell it but it should sell faster if priced right. I personally do go for rebuilt cars but if done right there are the advantages of having a new engine with no worries.

Good luck with the car and more so with parenthood, twins non the less!!!
