At the Tokyo Motor Show (3rd to 11th December) Volkswagen is showcasing its concept of an SUV of the future: the Cross Coupé. Visually the all-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid vehicle shows how Volkswagen designers could envisage a crossover between a four-door coupé and a compact SUV.

Sorry, but I gotta say it....it's ugly.

Front end reminds a bit of the last gen Lincoln MKX (not a bad looking car actually), but overall proportions look odd. Also not a fan of that grille with the thick black stripe at the top.

The only thing I can say I like is the design of the C-pillar and that sexy interior, which looks very Audi-esque!

I really don't see the draw of crossovers.....and this is no different. It's just meh. Dash tech is kinda cool, but overall this doesn't appeal to me.

Put that hybrid technology into a TDI Jetta and I'll be happy. Otherwise, it's just another crossover SUV wannabe. I really wish we could get out of the whole "bigger is better" thing already.....

Sounds fun, interesting engineering, looks pretty good -- except for the missing top grille bar. The designers got a bit carried away with that. Instead of appealing, it's bizarre and distracting. It looks like the VW broke before it even left the lot. Klaus and Walter, please glue it back on.

I like the interior. Produce it in Black with less flashy wheels. I might rock it.

If this was raised and lengthened, the general look would be nice for the 7 Seat, Passat-based crossover that is supposed to come out of Chattanooga.

Here's hoping that is the case instead of a another ridiculous Crosstour / ZDX competitor.

I was snoozing on this too - yawn yet another gas sucking SUV. Then I saw 87 MPG (2.7 litre per 100 km).

I could drive this. I have never even once considered an SUV because of the crappy mileage. If they produce this (or something similar) then times have changed.

I love it. this is a car i would rock in a heartbeat. I used to have an suv before i got my jetta last year... and I have had a ton of vws in the past (both air and water) but my knees are getting worn out and a higher vehicle is just what i need. it still looks sporty (something i think the current vw suvs lack) and has the height that makes it easier to get in and out of.

I like it too. It's moving away from the typical drab VW design elements. I hope some of the concepts make it into the rest of the line.

The same happens with the X6... it's also said to be a Coupé SUV.

I must say that I loved the concept, and think it is almost ready to come out for production. And may I say it might be a success...

Well in case you want to know a little bit more on the concept and see more pictures check it here

    Second that!
Jetta sport wagon, diesel, AWD. Utility, handling, and good milage.
How can Subaru offer so many AWD models, yet VW limits North America to so few?
When they do ship them (was it the 1980's?), they don't promote em...
