looks like i'm going to give in and check out this instagram thing

out of curiousity (i haven't actually seen the app yet), why is it so popular? i've got some answers in my head but wanted to know from actual users ...

In my mind it's popular because:

1: amateurs can easily put different filters over their plain pictures to create a vintage effect with just a few taps of the finger.

2: edited photos are easily shareable on the top social networks.

3: we are all attention whores who want other people to notice us.

Adding to those points, once you start following different photographers it generates an auto-updating feed that updates each time a followed user posts a photo (think twitter, only with photos).

And for every 10 halfwhitted twits who post 'omg self portrait of me and my new shoes' 'here's my dog lolz' crap shots there is at least 1 seriously TALENTED photographer posting something worth checking out. So it takes a bit of digging, searching, weeding through, and exploring but it is possible to find some people posting some seriously interesting stuff in their feeds on a fairly regular basis.

That said, it's also used by people around the world so I follow users from every time zone so there's always something new to check out in my news feed, no matter what time/day/etc.

It's like any other social networking do-dad; you get what you want out of it.

I'm definitely not going to add just a bunch of random people from Vortex. And the whole "I'll add you if you add me" thing is plain ridiculous.

The only real change I'm interested in is if Facebook's photo proprietary policies make their way over to Instagram. As in, will each photo that I post to my Insta stream, regardless of whether or not I 'share' it with Facebook, automatically become the property of the Zuckernerd corp?

i would say yes to your question - it would technically all fall under the corporate umbrella.
