the part number from AWEs guide should work but i can check mine tomorrow and let you know for sure. I also believe i found the part number for the OE repair wire to go into the ABS module. Its 000-979-038EA. my parts guy is telling me this is the correct one but when i get it either tomorrow or friday ill be able to say for 100% or not. i also ordered a roll of factory cloth tape that all the wires come wrapped in to make it look as stock as possible. any one who is interested the part number for the tape is 000-979-950. I ran the wire from the inside of the car to the engine compartment this evening which i believe is the hardest part so as soon as i get the new repair wire i can finish. i had to run the wire a totally different way on my SE because the grommet in the guide is so far under the cowl on my car i could barely even see it after i removed the engine cover let alone reach it. if im able to get the switch to work ill post a detailed guide on how i did it because its quite different than the GLI.

SUCCESS!! It works on the SE's. without the mfd it doesnt give you any idication that its off inside the car but i tried spinning the tires over with it on and it chirped once the light in the dash started flashing and it killed the power, then i hit the button and tried again and it spun like crazy. I took a ton of pictures and ill try to post them up soon and do a write-up when i get more time but here is one for now.

Can you use vagcom and change a coding setting so the light flashes on the cluster?

The shape of the ESP button is for the left side though. That is what the concern is. Have to mod the button shape I think

Sorry for the noob question but will this work on an automatic or is this a manual only thing and what is the difference between the GLI and non GLI install, the steps look the same? Also I think ogai has a much simpler setup here.

I'm looking forward to buy GLI early next year and started to compile a list of mods. The list obviously has adding ESP/Traction Control button, and AWE Tuning how-to is very handy.

Unfortunately, they did not provide the schematic, so I made one for myself.
I've noticed that for simplicity they permanently connected pins 3 and 4 of the ESP button to 12V power outlet. In this case the button is going to be backlit all the time (at least all times when power outlet is hot).

I have an idea to connect the backlit pin 3 to vehicle backlit circuitry by tapping on the similar pin of the other button, for example to the Tire Pressure Monitor button located in the glove box.

On the left side is the schematic of 2011 Golf ESP button. On the right side is the schematic of 2012 Jetta TPM button with proposed ESP button wiring.

Pin 3 of the ESP switch is connected to vehicle back-lighting circuitry, pin 4 receives 12V from same pin of TPM (this wire is already protected by 5A fuse).
Pin 6 goes to the vehicle ground. Pin 5 goes to pin 39 of the ABS module as described in the original DIY.

Note that I did NOT implement this idea yet, but I'm going to do this as soon as I get my new car.

P.S. ABS module connector pin 44 marked as "ESP_LED (optional)". Some cars have ESP switch with indicator light that uses this pin to indicate that ESP is off. However, it may still work on our cars too.
And pin 3 of the ABS module is marked as "Auto Hold input". Sounds like another possible mod: Auto Hold On/Off switch

its only lit when the button is actually being pressed. it goes back off when you let go. I personally didnt like driving around all the time with it on and now im sure power went to the module when i press it.

that is interesting because i think even on AWEs GLI they said once that message in the MFD goes away there is no other indication of it being off

That symbol lights up on my S when I loose traction in snow/rain I wonder if when I wire the switch if it will be illuminated when I press the esp off button. If not then theres probably a vagcom code I can set, maybe?
