Wow this is actually a really cool thread idea. Very helpful and cuts down on search time in a big way. Awesome job. And definitely add the Franken Turbo when a tune is finally offered.

Now that I have my own B5 I've been on the search for upgrades and comparing options for power, price etc. I figured a thread would be of good use for everyone to know whats out there and offer their own opinions or experiences.

I'm hesitent to add a FrankenTurbo option because there is no complete tune out there right now. Comments, questions and suggestions are welcome since after all I am only doing this for fun and to hopefully help others out there frequently in this same boat.
Of coure we all know that a turbo upgrade is just the start, but the route you choose to take with your exhaust, intercooler, fueling, clutch etc can severely affect your total price so in my opinion isn't something that you should factor in if you are already set on spending the money on such an upgrade.

Awesome thread. Should get some Dyno sheets up here with some details so we can see some wheel read outs.

Frankenturbo should be added here regardless of the tuning dilemma.
There are custom tunes available and the Unitronic or Motoza have been proven to work as well.

Good thread, i had an idea to do something like this, but im just to lazy hahah, looks good tho really helpful
my "budget b5 a4 build" would consist of..
1. Godspeed k04 (or other higher priced / overpriced turbo, your choice) $400 gotta remember your prolly gonna want to upgrade to a bt later, weather its a few months or a year. itll prolly happen
2. Silicone turbo inlet, and throttle body hose, about $300 for both. seem to be pretty restrictive and prone to expansion under high boost, the throttle body hose atleast
3. Forged DV, $140 more boost needs better boost management, ect...
4. name brand tune $500+
5. 034 intake mani spacer $57$
6. catless test pipe $150 think 90% of b5 1.8t owners know, this part is a huge upgrade even stock you can actually feel the difference.
Shop around, and you can have a pretty quick little a4 for around $1500, give or take...
not saying its perfect, just my opinion on what makes the most power with out braking the bank.![]()

Ok I added the FT option but I wasn't sure about the tune price so feel free to correct me on that. I'll probably add a cheapo combination option too. Any other ideas?
Pretty good competition between choices. For people doing their own work the FT option definitely seems to be a best bet but for those having it installed the Unitronic option would probably be a little cheaper If I were to guess.

where does this fall...

I personally could not enjoy driving my car at 20psi with that thing under the hood
I'll use the Godspeed option since they have some type of warranty and some of their other "cheap" ebay products have held up okay.
Just another thought on the FT option, I still don't get the feeling that the it can be tuned to 100% like the other options listed, I know some people are still having problems with Malone's tune (nothing against him, I had a stage 2 tune from him and loved it) and Motoza doesn't list the FT as a set tune. Motoza does seem like a good option and they technically do custom tunes so I guess I know why it wouldn't be listed as such I just personally feel that if it were perfect it would be listed like the other "off-the-shelf" tunes.
#11
so you wouldnt run it? i mean i understand why... i really do.
but its so tempting.. order this, kenetic manifold... then do some k04 software.. i mean worst case it takes a **** and you step up to a real k04 or you throw another one on it and keep going.
just tossing out ideas.. im planning my attack. Daily driver, need to be reliable... (i know that contradicts my above statement) decent power and low maitanence..

Idk to me the peace of mind is worth the $.
The RP Turbo ($800) was extensively tested (according to them):
And a few S4 owners have had them fail, which is why I can only think bad things about what might happen with those ebay turbos. But if you have the tools and the time I guess you are right about buying another if it goes.
#14
Could someone show me where I can obtain a Unitronic stage 2+ tune for $600?
They advertise $840.
After speaking with VAST, it seems they want nothing to do with tuning my FT.![]()

Unitronic doesn't list the specific FT tune on their site for either 1.8t engine platforms, it's still the same price as the Stage 2+ though. Technically it's a stage 2+ 440cc file but it's not a 440cc BT file.
So as far as a k04-015, Unitronic Stag 2+ is the best bet for power?

No problem. I had the FT kit on my mk4 GTI before I traded it for my A4, I had just a regular 386cc Unitronic stage 2+ and it was a very fun car. Never got a chance to upgrade to the 440cc file but did a lot of research in the 1.8t forum on it.
I already have the k04 on the car with the ECS cat delete pipe, milltek downpipe to 2.75"/3" straight pipe, 4bar fpr, hyperboost DV, EVOMs FMIC kit, and Dahlback stage 1. While the Dahlback is very smooth, it's pretty boring haha. Also only hits 16psi...guess I just want more after having my other car and would like to return to Unitronic.
FYI you can get the Bosch green giants from CB Tuning for $50 a piece.

also the reason you can get away with running a cheaper k04 for quite a while is its a relativity low RPM turbo, the speed 3 at my school, ive found when doing a WOT dyno run in 4th, the k04 looses boost COMPLETELY at 6000, redline was something like 7000. now im not saying to go expect a godspeed k04 to last as long as another possibly more reputable brand, but idk of anyone who did a k04 build, and didn't go bigger turbo within at least a year, of course not taking into account all the people who are forced to keep their current setups because of financial issues. im sure you can look around and find many threads of people doing k04 builds, followed by bigger turbo builds.. its also a really good (cheap) way to learn or gain confidence with working on a turbo/turbo'd car at all. so why not spend 400 and "test the waters" of the k04 instead of then spending close to $1000+ on a turbo thats probably not gonna satisfy your need for more power for long, which is what it equates to with most people, they do a mod and get bored and always want more, i can bet youll want more![]()

Pretty good point you make there.
Here is something I came across today, pretty cool to see more FT support:

^^ That's the Frankenturbo. That's a pretty good deal, save over $200 going that route.
#26
We now have the F21 turbo upgrade from FrankenTurbo out, any other updates or options do discuss or post up?
#27
The guys from North American motorsports are local guys, very good kit they have. I talked to them for a while about the frankenturbo, and would have bought it if college wasn't so damn expensive.![]()

I hear that. Although I listed Motoza Performance for the FrankenTurbo tune I never realized how cool they're product is!
I think I'll start with Stage 1 and the availability to upgrade after that is just too easy

may want to consider C2 motorsports too,
I know a guy who has there stage 3 tune 440cc in a MKIV 1.8t and it runs really good

where can i get that plastic elbow that connects the filter to the tip?
that is nice.
very clean. i really like the fitment.
i have the larger tip that fits the k04 also, but it hits the back of the headlight bulb connector.
i want a better fitting tip and i'd love to have that elbow to filter!!

it looks as though Motoza only does 2001 and up? does that mean people like myself that have a 99 are out of luck for a Ko4 program? And any more info for people with FT setups on who they are going through? such as dyno sheets, hp/tq numbers.

if any of you guys are heading to sowo they will probably have half off on there tunes.
they have had this sale in all the other sowo's. (c2 motorsport)
