Thread: 04 1.8t gli / boosting issues please feel free to help

  1. 12-28-2011 09:08 AM #1
I buddy of mine has a 04 GLI 1.8T and has been having some issues for a month or so, I scanned his car and came up with the following codes. I have replaced the N75 valve, boost sensor, installed a samco turbo inlet boot, new front O2 sensor. I don't want him to keep throwing money into this but is there any test that can be done to determine if the MAF is causing his car not to boost past 0 It's getting annoying, it's either the MAF or Wastegate. I am open to all suggestions.

    Thanks

From what I can tell it seems like you might have a vacuum leak. Have you tried doing a leak test? I think the reason you're getting all the inefficiency codes is because the engine is sensing extra air that it hasn't found when going through the MAF. Check out this link http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...st-Leak-Tester Also if you have access to a smoke machine it will also help in visually showing you where the leaks are. When I first bought my car I had a HUGE leak in the PCV lines under the intake manifold, 3 mins of letting the smoke machine run and saw it pouring out from under the intake.

I will post the entire scan tomorrow. But so far I've replaced the MAF / N75 / boost sensor @ turbo Inlet pipe. I've performed many leak test and everything isn't air tight. My thought either ECU / Throttle Body or wastegate. Car has decent power but won't budge past 0 psi .
    Please help

    Thanks

Seems to me an over boost condition probably due to incorrect hose hookup.

Verify as per the repair manual and verify with logs in VCDS after codes cleared.

I will check all connections tomorrow thanks for the feedback, I even tried capping of the N75 valve port leading to the waste gate to see if the waste gate was bad. Could it be the B1 S1 O2 sensor, how well do the aged test predict bad sensors?

    Thanks

  9. 01-03-2012 11:12 PM #9
    Keep this in mind.

Boost is used to open the waste gate not vacuum. Your current thought process is ass back-wards.

It is switched via the N75 to hold the waste gate shut to gain boost.

If unplugged, it will go to full on boost, then limp mode, due to a 200 MBAR deviation seen by the ecu at the map sensor as a protection mechanism.

    Hence, the over boost DTC.
The limitation of the DTC, is every terminal 15 key cycle, or cleared DTC memory until deviation seen again.

does the car jurk or hesitate when about to go into boost?

  12. 01-11-2012 11:20 AM #12
    NO SOLUTIONS YET

I just got back from vacation today and I will run a few VAG checks. I want to run a O2 sensor aging test to see if my B1 S1 is shot. But it doesn't run rough, it does hesitate to budge past "0" psi

Is your car chipped? Some of the tuners will delete o2 sensors and prevent some of the tests from running.

This is a result of an underlined condition.

    False air.
    Bad MAF
    Lean condition.
    Over boost condition!
You better sort that out or its gonna get expensive.

Always remember Cause + Effect or Effect again!
