Picked mine up Monday. A few pictures:

First VW for me. Ended up getting my name on an unold order en route about a month ago at Cumberland Valley Motors in Mechanicsburg. Good people there, reasonable pricing, and they told me they have another unsold Rising Blue 4-door loaded on the water now.

Congrats - liking the 4 door choice. What car(s) are you coming from, comparison?

Thanks. My last car was a 2004 Mazda 6, V6 w/ 5-speed. It was fun to drive, handled well, ok on gas and cheap to insure. I always wished I had spent the extra money and got the Speed 6 though.

This is my first turbocharged car and the biggest difference to me is how quickly the car makes power in the mid to upper RPMs compared to my old NA Mazda.

This was a bit of an impulse buy. I was pretty well set on a 2012 Volvo S60 T6 when I happened to test drive a 2-door R at my local dealership and loved it. The S60 is a great car imo and really a pretty good value compared to a 3-series. Without a manual though, it just doesn't involve the driver as much, and the R does that very very well.

I was told today my car will be here 2nd week of July and will be a MY 2013. Could have had one earlier at another dealer, but thought I'd wait.

Just took over an order (original person backed out) on a 4 door Rising Blue with Nav and Sunroof still in production. Due in late June-July. Hope it's early because I'm going on vacation for 3 weeks in July!

Hunt Club VW, Ottawa, ON, had a red one siting out on the grass last Friday. Took a look at it while I was there to pickup parts for the racecar. Got chatting with the salesman who came out, turns out I know his dad. Spur of the moment purchase after texting and a skype call with the wife and we bought the car that day. Picking it up at 8pm tonight.

I just found out that my R should be ready to take home next week.

One of the things my salesman warned me about was the sales pitch for the extended warranty. That fact alone leads me to believe it's kind of a scam (IE: very expensive).

I've never done this with other new vehicles I've bought, so I'm inclined to decline their offer.

Curious to know what everyone else did when they were offered this.

I literally fell asleep during the pitch, I think he got the hint.

Generally speaking, if extended warranties were of a true benefit to the consumer they would not be offered IMHO. I wasn't awake long enough to find out how much these programs cost. I think it was a multi tiered approach and the assumption would be that as the tier names reach higher grades of precious metal the larger the hole that's left where your arse used to be...

    Your mileage may vary...

Did all my paperwork at the dealer yesterday and got $2500 for the POS I'm driving on a cash for clunkers deal the dealership is running. I get to keep it until the R gets here though, so I am not without wheels. Not much longer now!

Bought it at Tom Bush VW in Jacksonville. Great people to deal with. The car was available due to a cancellation by the guy who ordered it. Having owned an 04 R32, I decided to test drive an R. Ended up signing the papers and taking it home a few hours later! Love the car. Planning on APR Stage 2+, but nothing yet.

My wife had made an appointment for me after I mentioned earlier in the week that I wanted to test drive one. She picked up a 2012 GTI @5 months ago and every time I drive it I like it more. After pulling away from the lot on the test drive, it instantly reminded me of my beloved but long gone 2004 R32...which is what I was hoping for!

    I had tested several cars over the last month but wasn't sold on any of them for a variety of reasons;

    - Mini Clubman S and JCW: Nice interior, decent performance, WAY TOO MUCH torque steer
    - Subaru WRX and STi: Down with the performance, not sold on the looks, interior leaves much to be desired
    - Audi A3: Smaller version of my current ride (A4 Avant 2.0T quattro), still has me wanting for more
    - Volvo c30: Like the look, but everything else is meh.

I wanted to stick with hatchbacks as I haul around lots of stuff, including double/upright basses and Rottweilers Needless to stay I'm very excited about getting the R in a few weeks (Danbury CT VW). They had a black one in stock and while nice looking, but I'm not big on owning black cars. It turned out that they had a 4 door Carbon Steel already en route from overseas, which is supposedly the last one they are getting for 3-5 months (who really knows though). It's the full package model, which I was really only interested in because of the potential difference in the stereo. IMO the Dynaudio turned out to be a very noticable difference from the base stereo in my wife's GTI. It will be nice to not lose a sunroof (from the Audi). I don't really care about the nav but I do like the interface better than my wife's GTI.

Regardless, I've got a R now with my name on it and I'm very excited to be back in the VW family! Even better is that it turned out I actually had equity in my Audi, so between that and selling my bike (25th anniversary Buell XB-12Ss) I'll still be paying less $$$ a month on autos, and be much more happy driving
Picked up mine today Just got back from some fun driving. We're now rocking a GTI (wife) and the R in my family! Now that I've sat in the seats a bit more I really like them...I was thinking initially that I wanted something else.

Mazda is really the least appreciated JP brand, although they never forget the enthusiast (Mazdaspeed 3 now) and have quality interiors. Your previous car was on my shopping list.

As a former S60R owner i have to agree with you that the comrades running Volvo these days only care about mass marketing to the target demographic.

You have entered a new era, i doubt you will be driving non-Teutonic cars for a while. As a former 2004 R32 owner i welcome you to the exclusive 6MT AWD performance auto club!

I saw today that the VW dealer closest to me had three new 2012 Golf Rs in stock. I was surprised! The sales person said they would sell quickly. Someone bought a forth Blue model while I was there so I don't doubt him.

    They had:

    2-Door Black
    2-Door Carbon Steel
4-Door White with Sunroof & Nav

(and a 4-Door Rising Blue with Sunroof & Nav that sold)

I don't want to break any spamming rules. If this is the correct thread and it's okay to post the dealer contact info I will otherwise it seems some dealers are getting a few Rs in off the truck to sell.

    EDIT:
They are located in San Juan Capistrano, California.

It's cool so long as you don't work for the dealer.

No, I don't work for VW or any dealers. Just a longtime lurker here and finally found a reason to post.

I spoke to Richard McAllister at Capistrano VW. He made a Golf R video that I enjoyed and thought I'd stop by. Richard was very nice and seemed to be genuinely excited about the R.

Finally got mine last night. 2-door base, Rising Blue.

I ended up getting out of bed about an hour early this morning because I was that excited about driving it in to work today. Holy crap, I love this car.

After 8 months on the wait, I got a call saying that someone had dropped an order. Not the color I wanted (grey) but close enough. Could have been another 3 months, but would've been a '13 model year. What a great feeling after the wait, made even sweeter after driving an old beater pickup in one of the worst commutes in the country since selling the S4 in December. I pray for a speedy delivery for all of you waiting gearheads out there.

    Go Seattle!

Going up to Edmonds to pick mine up in a couple weeks when it gets here.
    Odd progression:
    911SC -> Boxster -> MX-5 -> Kona Honky Inc. Road Bike -> Golf R
