Why not put in a small TDI inline with the electric motor. I know VW can get more than 45MPG out of a diesel. Then back that with an electric motor should be getting more like 60, maybeUnless starting and stopping in the city commute is bad for a diesel?

They didn't put a diesel in because the US market is just plain anti-diesel. Yes, there are plenty of people in the US that are aware, but the majority are not. Even the thought of a VW turns them off because they only think of the Beetle, and VW is not a premium brand like it is in the rest of the world, and VW does nothing to dispel that notion, either. When I say to my friends I can and have gotten nearly 55 mpg with my tdi, thay are amazed, but won't even concider one for themselves. They have been fooled into thinking that electric or hybrid gas electric is the only way, or they just don't care. When I see someone driving a 7000 lb SUV for a 80 mile round trip commute, that tells me something. Besides, gas/electric is the new black...

Well considering VW is getting close to being the number one selling brand in the states, maybe they should start plugging it. I had really hoped to get another VW at some point, but I just can't afford them anymore. I'm sure this hybrid is going to be in the $30K range and that's just more than I can pay. I can remember getting my 2000 TDI Jetta for a hair under $15K new and it got better mileage than this. I think if they put out a car that got 60-70mpg, people may be willing to overlook the green gas pumps, but I could be wrong. I'm sure they will be a success, just nothing I can get excited about.

Sweet! We get something more cutting edge than the routine offerings. PLUS as noted, HIDS are now available for the mkVI Jetta, never want to ASSume anything with VWOA but maybe even as an option or standard on upper-end GLI ( 2013 version ). Thanks, VW!!!![]()

Yeah, the 1.6TDI would not be much cheaper than the 2.0TDI, but underpowered for the car. Add to the higher cost (than the 1.4TSI) ~$2,000 in emissions equipment, VW would have ended up with a really slow and expensive car.
VW needs to place this under $25,000 starting price to be competitive.

You're on the right track. Diesel + electric efficiences overlap far more than gas + electric, so if one plans on a wide range of loads/speeds/etc., then gas/electric is best. If, however, loads & speeds are somewhat constrained, then diesel + electric comes into play. It's a matter of matching one's market.

Another 2 Vw's I will not have any need or respect for. Come on VW give something cool from europe. I'm just fed up with north American discrimination. VAG makes some amazing vechiles (these aren't them) however none are found in NA. I was thinking of moving up stream to Audi but again VAG discrimination. I know for a fact that VW Germany turns down any requests made by VW us/can. I met the person who submits the applications to Vw Germany - gotta love the wife's Xmas parties. You know VW NA applied for the Polo and was turned down 3 times in the last 2yrs, I know the scirocco, and now recently the Up! All these applications had market data with product line up info to support the need for these vechiles. However, It isn't the lack of trying of the behalf of VW North America it's all VW Germany. I think we as north americians need to flood European side of social media so our voice will be heard. So I don't harp NA side of VW. It's all VW Germany discrimination.

all i ever here from the instructors at vw's own training facilities (because its a commonly asked question) is why dont they make a tdi hybrid, and their answers are always the same. it would just be too expensive. A base model Jetta TDI starts at 22,700 and only goes up from there. I could only imagine what a hybrid diesel would cost. And lets not forget, the customer would have to pay to maintain this car, and as someone that works in the service department, i can tell you, diesel parts are not cheap

My dealer can't keep a diesel on the lot.
The demand is there, but Germany won't listen to VOA.
Took my friend to look for a car: he had an '11 Audi A7, loaded. Had him test drive the stick Golf TDI, made the deal right then.

I agree. US sales of diesels were way up and sales of hybrids were way down. Nobody wants a "sport hybrid" that is slower to 60 than a TDI and gets worse gas mileage too. Nobody wants a Prius with zero "driver's car" appeal.
What I don't get is the Jetta TDI already gets those kind of MPG figures and it is a time tested powertrain. I bet a hybrid TDI could get into the 60's or maybe even 70's for mpg. Too bad they would cost an arm and a leg. Of course, this is coming from someone who think there should only be two types of Golf: The GTI and the TDI. There's really no point to the 2.5. It isn't efficient or fast (kind of like the CR-Z but even worse). Then maybe the diesels wouldn't cost so much either![]()

Knowing V-tex...someone will attempt to swap in a TDI for diesel hybrid and be done by the end of the first year in production...just to say "this is what we really want in USA".

Assuming a standard TDI model is $1k to $2k more than it's equivalent gasser...then the Hybrid TDI should only be $1k - $2k more? Elementary math Watson. But if they're going to blow it out of the price range, might as well make it 4Motion TDI Hybrid with bumper-2-bumper warranty for 4yrs.
