My first tour starts tomorrow, Help me make it through the first stroke

Yes, got rescued laast night per a host from Warmshowers.org. and today treated to a free room at a motel by fellow from Couchsurfers. heading out in the morning for US-87. Bought a new rear rack, the original one I started wit was rated at 25lbs...lol. The new one is designed for MTB with disk brakes and has a rating of 50lbs. still trying to figureout the more water issue. the desert is closing in on us.

Finally back to civilization. We made it out of Hill Country. But Ralf decided in EldorAdo to go North versus West. tons of pictures coming as soon as we find the one and only McDonalds in town. The we are going to shuffle to San Angelo State Park for the night. Texas is huge. Averaged 17 mph today, flat land a few hills and a 5 mph head wind. 43 miles in 2:44 minutes.

in other news
...Rear tire blew apart last night around 10. I waited out the heat to travel in the cool temps. I had to push the bike 20 miles to Big Spring, TX. Found a Walmart with some poor excuse for tires. No bicycle shop located.

at first, I tried to hold the tire together with an inner tube and tape, but the TX shoulder was vicious. I unhooked the rear brake cable (i never use it anyhow) and had to remove the rear brake pads to keep them from rubbing. By then the tire became useless.

My friends all rallied together last night and sent us money for a new set of tires. Now just have to find a shop.
Nearest bike shop is 40mile Southwest in Midland, TX. greeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaatttttttt

Good to hear that you were able to get a new set of tires and got rolling again. Looks like things are going pretty well besides that little hiccup, but that 20 mile push I bet was frustrating. Keep your head up, and I'm sure things have been better since then. You must be super fit now. I saw somewhere you were avg'ing 17mph, that's damn good, even on a Road Racing bike. It will be interesting to see what your numbers are like when you complete your tour and see how fast you can get that sucker unloaded.

I am not 100% sure about that as I tend to do more mountain biking than road. Having said that...I do see bikers on the (far) shoulder of the interstate every once in a while but thats between santa fe and albuquerque...I dont frequently go south past ABQ.

The original plan was tossed out last night for making the trek to Roswell due to high winds. This morning we went to the local library, which doubles as a Visitor Center, for a free map of New Mexico. I grab a map and thought "man this is detailed". Then the librarian makes the statement to check the date of the maps ...this one was from 1988!!!!!!!!!!!!! . Every map was from the 90's, and these are NM DOT distributed maps. We find one from 2010. Fingers crossed. Going to head out this evening, trying again with Roswell as the goal.

MADE IT TO ALBUQUERQUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
3 days stuck on the side of the road 20 mile shy of Vaughn, NM. Not one person stopped to assist us!!! The bicycle has met its match ....Mountains. Not sure what to do now.

lol, welcome to ABQ/NM man. The weather here is a tricky bitch. I was rollin around in the jeep with the doors off Friday/Saturday then Monday/Tuesday we had snow

And I am sure we'll have another storm before summer is upon us.

The bicycle has a new lease on life! -Wider gearing for these long inclines. We had breakfast at Frontier Resturant ...mmm, yesterday. Going to find a library to upload pics and a park to hang in.
