Another January... another season of Idol
Same judges as last year? Wow
Cant say Steven Tyler hasnt grown on me... and Ive started to appreciate this panel a lot more than I would have expected after witnessing the horrific judging of the X Factor.

WILLIAM HUNG
Of course, this article must begin with this patron saint of all rejected "Idol" auditioners. Back in 2004, even in the days before YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook, William's wacky Season 3 "She Bangs" audition went instantly viral, and he incredibly ended up with a major record deal. He even ended up selling more records than some legitimate singers from "Idol," as his first album, Inspiration, actually shifted almost 200,000 units (please note that's 50,000 more copies than Season 9 winner Lee DeWyze's post-"Idol" album sold). William has since released two more albums, starred in commercials, and acted in two Hong Kong films, but what's most interesting is the fact that he is now working for the L.A. County Sheriff's Department as a technical crime analyst. ("My passion has always been math. It just took a while to end up as my career," he told the L.A. Weekly.) But while William may be giving up his musical crimes to focus on actual ones, his "Idol" legacy remains intact. In fact, the L.A. Weekly just put him at number one on its top 20 list of all-time musicians. ("He is the greatest musician of all time because he epitomizes our highs, our lows, and our struggles to make ourselves heard," wrote journalist Ben Westhoff, insanely.) Hung apparently still bangs after all these years.

I've never once seen a full episode of American Idol. I think the most I've seen are bits and pieces from the early episodes of the season when they show all of the awful people.![]()

In some respects, the first couple weeks are the best... you have the awful auditions and then you have the raw/unproduced talents. By the time you get to the final 12, they usually homogenize everyone.

I watch it with my wife. Steven Tyler was hilarious last year, so I hope everything works well this year too.
Usually the winners aren't the best ones in a given year. There are exceptions, but usually there's someone else who should have won.

The last guy who did the Acoustic version of thriller... that dude killed it. Hope he's around for a while.

I don't follow AI as much anymore because I can pretty much guess the outcome.
Avg contestant comes up, has a sad story but mediocre voice.
J-LO: "I'm gonna say yes."
Steven: "I think you're great."
Randy:"I'm gonna give you a shot, welcome to hollywood."
Had Paula or Simon remained there will be some voting drama as always.
I missed the early seasons where Simon would just say the obvious to the contestant.
"You're not even close."
Then Randy would add in "Yeah, I don't think you're what this competition is about."

Jennifer Diley from SD = 8============D I don't care if she can sing or not....I never expect strippers to sing.

Anyone watching.
It looks like the little blond chick and Jessica Sanchez are front runners. I cant see any of the guys winning

You underestimate the teenage girl voting block. A girl hasn't won in... 5 years?... and some very mediocre guys have won over some good girls (and over some good guys too).
I haven't been keeping up, but my wife has played a couple of them for me. I like the Erika Van Pelt girl, but there's no doubt that Jessica Sanchez is amazing. Turns out she's related to someone my wife went to high school with too.

Well, if a guy will win... I'd pick Phil Phillips (redundancy is his middle name).

Yep, same results for the last 5 years another mediocre guy wins. He's better off being an actor than a singer. Look at the past 5 years, they haven't produced any super star artist other than Chris Daughtry and he's not even a winner. Girls seem to have a better chance with stardom and longevity. Kelly Clarkson has a new album earlier this year doing reasonably well and where are the other guy winners?
This year it was pretty lame, they said 120mil votes were casted yet the TV ratings showed only 20~25 mil viewers the final two episodes. Sounds like it's all about the re-dial button.

Predictable to the last.
I've now heard a name for the American Idol winner archetype: WGWG (White Guy With Guitar). It definitely fits the last 5 years. It's too bad it can't be a James Durbin-like, more rock oriented WGWG every once in a while, but really as far as those last five winners go, Phil's probably one of the better ones. He fits right in to an indie folk style that's popular right now, from Mumford and Sons to Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, to the rising popularity of The Decemberists.
Hopefully they don't change him too much.

A WGWG does not guarantee commercial success, even Justin Bieber is slowly changing to adapt to an older fanbase. He doesn't want just the Nsync/NKOTB fanbase. Most of the top commercial pop acts are female and typically last much longer than their male counterparts.
Imo, because AI doesn't certify the phone call votes I'm sure many of those teenage girls are clicking on redial all-night.
