So some of you may have seen my posts in the classifieds for a while looking for an MKIII, and I looked at a few of craigslist and none really were a good deal, and people tried to rip me off. Recently I took a drive to Clearwater (2-ish hours from Orlando) and picked up my 98 GTI for $2,150, has 96,xxx miles has no rust and some upgrades.

    Done by PO:
~A dumb a$$ white hood (said he planned on a checkerboard design).
    ~Neuspeed catback.
~Ground Control Coilovers (also included a neuspeed set, and a set I can't find the name for).
    ~Neuspeed P-chip computer.

The car does need some work though (it came with all of the parts to fix it).
    ~Front wheel bearings.
~Front control arms with bushings and ball joint.
    ~Both front window regulators.
~Also the hatch doesn't open via. the key or the button inside, any ideas?

Link to an album of pics (before the wash). Also don't mind the white hood, PO wanted to do a checkerboard design:

Thanks for looking and I hope to spend all my time on this forum,
    ~Scott.

Sorry, was at work, link fixed.

Ok so I did the window regulators today (both), one problem on the pass. side window when I put it up it goes up 3/4 of the way and then comes back down, if I tap the switch it goes all the way up. Any ideas?

Tomorrow I plan on tackling both front bearings and the control arms, wish me luck.

Attempted to do the front wheel bearings and control arms this morning before work, didn't realize it would take all day.

    Control arm bushings are shot.

Attempting to bang the axle from the hub.

    This.

    This.

Then did some searching on the forum and found that I needed this, it's a hub puller and I STRONGLY suggest getting one before attempting to change the bearings.

    New bearing in.

That's all for today, I have to get the control arm out (oil pan in the way of the far right nut on the control arm. Also think the PO gave me the wrong control arms, I may need to just put poly bushings all around and be done with this ****.

Yeah, haven't had the time to run it and see what codes come up. The PO said it needs a new MAF. Sounds like a ***king bike.... I thought maybe it was cause of being chipped and the cat being hollowed but ehhhh... I'm listening to all opinions..

doesn't sound like it's firing on all cylinders or it has a misfire(s).

most likely ignition related, but i'd be curious to see what a compression test would yield.

Thanks for the info man, you think it's as easy as a bad spark plug / wire, or the coil pack or as serious as a failing cylinder?
Once I get the bearings done and if it runs ok I'll shoot down to autozone ( like ten mins down the road ). They can read it and throw me the code for free. But isnt there a little plug that came in mk3's that went into the OBDII port and I could get a code that way?

    Thanks,
    -Scott.

what are you talking about man? Thats whats got us confused, if you have a snap on OBDII reader you can plug that into the OBD port above the cig lighter and get the codes. I think what your talking about is the vagcom cable, you dont need that to just read codes....or am I misunderstanding what your saying?

^This. Are you missing the port all together. Any obd2 scan reader will plug in to the port. The port is behind the dummy plate above the cig lighter. You have to pull out the ash tray and slide it towards the driverside of the car. Voila there is your obd port

I might be mistaken but the reader I have needs cartridges ( like a n64 ) for different types of cars and models.....

What I meant was that and the fact that my car didn't come with the OBDII plug so the car would spit codes out without a reader...

Sorry to confuse you, once the bushings are in I will do a read whether I do it or take it to autozone for a free read and then a full tune up oil, plugs, wires, filters, needs tires like a b***h too.

    Thanks for the replies guys.
People on here are more helpful than any other forum I've been on...

An array of tools. A tool for putting in bushings. And mainly a chisel and a hammer works good.

Probably. I just need to figure out how I'm gonna scan my car, since it's not on the road, needs tires, and I can't get it to autozone.

Alright both front control arms and wheel bearings are in and done! now I need to get (borrow) an OBDII scanner, and find out why she's running rich. Then tires, battery, registration and FUN!

She's still running rich, check spark plug wires. They were ok so it's not the coil pack. Pulled the MAF with it running, and it completely shut off so the MAF is good... I'm at a loss for options here... Could it be due to the neuspeed P chip and tune????
