ok, I'm new to VW so I may have made some assumptions here. On page 51 on the manual it talks about "Preparation for the anti-theft alarm system". Don't cars come with alarm systems now a days? My last two GM cars came with factory alarm systems. Is there a VW OEM module that can be added to give you an alarm and corresponding insurance discount? If so has anyone done this?

I wonder; I thought this was for maybe the S model but it does not list an alarm as standard equipment. Interesting

The vehicles come with the standard immobilizer system from VW. The Basic Alarm Kit that VW is offering adds Breach protection to the car.

This is from the VW Accessory catalog...

"This basic alarm retrofit is an add on vehicle security system with alarm horn, hood open, door open, trunk open recognition for vehicles that already have factory keyless entry with remote lock/unlock and panic button feature.

When equipped with this upgrade, your vehicle alarm will sound and the hazard lights flash continuously if there is unauthorized access of a vehicle doors, under hood, or trunk is attempted.

The system does not change security and convenience features"

So if someone got the door open while it was locked it wouldn't set off the alarm? Why is there a blinking red light then? Just for cosmetic purposes?

Does this add a glass breakage sensor or something where it sets off the alarm if someone breaks the glass?

    What is the point otherwise?

All my previous VW's would sound the horn if any door/hood/trunk were breached. The B7 should be the same. I dont think we have a glass sensor on the B7.
I remember seeing an option in VCDS about alarm. I forget what was Bits were checked. I will have hook up to it and will let you know my findings.

I don't believe it's breakage, just breach. So if someone opened your door or trunk without a key, the alarm would sound.

So you mean right now if someone opened the trunk or door it wouldn't set off the alarm? $34,000 and it won't set off the alarm.. You're kidding right?

Alram will sound if opened. Will not sound if glass is broken. No OEM manufacturer will offer what an after market unit will; no matter what you spend on the car. If you want better protection look into an aftermarket system.

ok so after all this discussion, is any B7 owner out there going to by this OEM VW basic alarm module and install it? If and when anyone does, please share your experience with it (installing, etc)

I'm certainly interested.. What is the price, and is it easy to install?

And once again that means that right now if you open the doors when they're locked no alarm goes off? And the red blinking light is purely cosmetic?

So I was curious and decided to email VW the other night. Here is their response.

Thank you for your e-mail seeking to know if your 2012 Passat was equipped with an alarm system. I appreciate the opportunity to respond.

All 2012 Passats come equipped with immobilizers; however, an alarm system is not a standard feature. I apologize for any disappointment this information may have caused. The 2012 Passat was designed based on extensive consumer research, and what Americans are looking for in their next automobile. I regret your Passat has not lived up to your expectations.

I have documented your concerns, and will make the available to the appropriate parties within Volkswagen of America for internal review. If you are interested in adding an alarm system to your Passat, I recommend contacting your selling Volkswagen dealership. Their Service Department will be in the best position to advise you of your options, and will be able to assist you further.
Now I was kinda annoyed about this for a second, but then I calmed down. I, like most people here, assumed that a standard horn/lights alarm system was a given. But I think that most people don't even use them. Most alarm don't grab people's attention, and people responding to VW's survey's probably didn't show interest in whatever question regarding an alarm.

So yeah, I understand but I am still disappointed. I am going to get the alarm kit when I can. I rather have it, than not. Just thought I'd inform you guys.

What's your email, and I will send over the PDF. $75.00 shipped for the kit within the Continental U.S.

It says you have to mount a horn, does that mean it is a separate horn from the panic alarm that sounds the horn?

    And it needs VAG COM?

Can you elaborate on these topics

There is an alarm horn on all VW's that have an alarm. Since the new Passat does not have a horn, it needs to be added. Also, the coding is required so the car knows an alarm has been installed.

Is the horn like a siren noise (ie bmw benz) or is it a horn like the old B6; It must be different from the honk noise it makes on the panic button right?

I tested this today and sure enough, you can open a door from the inside when the car is "armed" with LED blinking and nothing happens. No flashing lights, no horn. The "armed" placebo LED keeps blinking too. I tried the painic button, which does cause the horn to honk, lights to flash, etc. So we have an alarm, but it's a manual one. Sit in one of these near the car and wait for a potential thief:

When the thief tries to break in, press panic button on fob.

I would be interested. For $75.00, that is not a bad price, and it may bring my insurance down. Can you send me the pdf too, just pm it, or post it on this forum.

    Thanks!

That's interesting. My 06' Jetta has an alarm, it's not a base model, but one model up...has leatherette instead of cloth, auto, climactic, heated mirrors...etc. I tested it when it was new, rolled the windows down, clicked "lock" on the fob, then reached in and opened the door...horn started beeping like crazy. I wonder if the new Jetta comes equipped with a factory alarm, or if it's missing on that model too.

Not that it makes it right, but I believe when VW was doing all these focus groups on the Passat, people probably responded with the fact that no one pays attention to car alarms. Living in the city, alarms are going off all the time, and no one looks or cars, unless it's their car. VW figured that, no one would notice because the flashing light is still there, and there are immobilizers so no one can steal it. But for me, I rather have the piece of mind of having the alarm, than to pretend to have it.

With that said, my mother's '04 Kia doesn't have an alarm either, but has the keyfob and panic feature. She's had it since '04 and so far (knock on wood) never needed it.

VW recommended time is right at 2 hours, 1.9. Plus the alarm kit.
