    1983 VW Rabbit GTI
    01-29-2012 10:54 PM #1
So... the guys at my shop were shooting the **** and decided to figure which of my cars were faster. I have lots of cars and my techs know which ones are faster (1/8, 1/4, top end etc) except they did not know where to place my GTI in the pecking order.

We are going to have to find out. The first car my Rabbit is going to race is my Audi TT. If it beats the TT I will race it against some of my faster cars till it gets beat.

The car my Rabbit has to beat is a 2005 Audi TT 225 HP 6 speed Roaster Convertible. This car is dead stock.

The challeger is my 1983 Rabbit GTI. It is dead stock except with an unmodified Callaway Stage II turbo kit. Horsepower is unknown. 5 Speed standard transmission.

The plan is to run both cars at the stop light grand prix, the 1/4 mile track and finally at the next autocross. The drivers will be myself and one of my techs. Seat of the pants tells me that the Rabbit is a bit quicker light to light. I've never raced either car but with the AWD the Audi has it will be diffucult to beat it off the start. The Rabbit with it's lower gearing I and added boost I believe with catch up with the Audi and beat it.

Who is going to win? You decide.

    Results to follow.

If the rabbit wins any of them I expect the autoX to be the one.

I think the TT has it beat by 2 or 3 less lbs per hp.... guessing OFC I have no idea how much the stage II kit could add, but if it's 110hp or less you're sunk. 140 or more and you'll smoke the TT all around.

    Stoplight Grand Prix Results......

    Rabbit Wins!!!

The Audi as I guessed took it on the launch but the Rabbit would quickly overtake in second gear. My tech and I swapped cars and got the same results.

I now feel that the Audi may beat it in the 1/4 mile. The Rabbit is geared low and I think can't keep up the pace........ I'll post some time slips next monday.

too cool. it might be for the same reason I think the rabbit is going to smash the TT in auto-X.... Traction control. lol

A stage 2 runs about 11 lbs boost and has an intercooler, no? You might be at 180-200 hp, and even with the short gearbox, you can get to 120 mph and still be at reasonable rpm.

Therefore, I predict that wheel spin will penalize you off the line against even a minivan, but once you're going, it'll take something like a new 911 turbo to pull away from you.

Yes.... It runs around 10 pounds of boost and has an intercooler. It's small and actually sits underneath the vehicle since it has A/C in the set up.

I'd be corious at it's hp numbers.... it's downright sluggish at first but when the boost comes on it really moves.

I agree, I doubt that the HP numbers are very high. Everything is in excellant condition though. I wish I had a dyno. We thought about getting one but we don't have the room for it at my shop and I don't want to take up room for it in my garage at home.

If I did anything to increase the HP I would first think about drivability and get rid of the CIS in favor of some other kind of fuel management system. I'll have to search this forum soon to see what others have done. Perhaps a FI system out of a later car but how would it work with my boost set up? Hmmmm..... I'll have to check it out soon.

Anyhoo.... I'm going to run the 1/4 mile numbers on both cars this weekend. I guess that the TT will beat it in the 1/4 but the Rabbit will stomp it at the autocross. Or should I say Rabbit kick?

    Will post the results.

Not yet. I've been too lazy and not playing with my cars. I bought an old house to restore instead!
Will get back to my fun.
