Yeah, the info is all out there already, but it's scattered around. I figured this would help people like me who haven't done it before. Sorry for not taking any screen shots; I was lazy.

Comfort window control via remote key fob

1. Go to 09 - Central Electronics
2. Go to Code
3. Go to long coding helper
4. Go to Byte 3
5. Make sure bits 1, 3, 4 and 5 are checked.
6. Exit out and click Do It
7. Result: This allows you to raise your windows and close your sunroof if the car is off by pressing the lock button on your remote key fob. Very handy feature that my previous car had that I missed having until now.

TLud, does this coding also allow for the opening of the windows via keyfob, or just closing? I would like to have the auto-open feature for hot days to air out the car before I get in, so I wanted to make sure.

From the pics it looks like they were putting the clear bra on black portion of the grill. How long did it take to do the install? I washed mine today and was happy to see no dings yet so I want to get the same thing done. It looks awsome on your car from the photo's !

Yep, I highly recommend it. Not sure how long it took them to install it because I had them do it before I even took delivery of the car.

You can set it to where it opens the sunroof as well. Just select/check bit 0.

you should try just to see if it works on the R.....then disable it again.

I saw APR announced their intake, and after reading the instructions for the boost gauge, I think I'm going to wait for it before putting in the gauge. You have to take off the stock intake anyway....

The radar detector is a really easy install. Even if you've never done this before and have no idea what you're doing, it will take less than an hour.


Both of these mods were critical for me. I felt very naked without the radar detector, and the Escort 9500ix does its job very well. The only downside is that I have the 9500ix with the blue display, but I'll switch that over to my wife's car and get a new red one for myself to better match the interior lighting of the R.

The new rear view mirror is excellent. It's really nice not having to keep a garage door opener in the car, for the sake of both security and lack of clutter. It's also nice having the auto-dimming feature because the R is so low to the ground. I got the version (GENK45A) with the compass built in (I like having the MFD free to display other information), but if you want the same mirror without compass, get the GENK41A model instead. The only downsides to the mirror are (1) that the compass letters are bluish-green; and (2) the homelink buttons don't illuminate, so they can be difficult to see at night. Issue no. 1 doesn't really bother me, and issue no. 2 ceases to be a problem because you quickly get a feel for where the button is.

This is exactly why I haven't installed my boost gauge yet. That APR/VWR intake is holding up the show on a couple of things.

This is a very slick setup. I had the stealth Escort radar detector/laser shifter on one of my previous cars and loved it.

They do use a Gentex mirror. Although it's a slightly different model, I'm 99.9% sure it mounts the same as the one I used. It mounted up to the existing mirror base just fine. You just need to use the Audi/VW adapter kit I mentioned above.

Don't have the energy to read the whole thread again, but did you happen to vcds code the comfort setting on the turn signals. Had a friend change my setting to 4 but it still only blinks 3 times. How can I fix this?

Yeah, there are more steps to that one than the other coding items. If you just try to change the coding, nothing will happen. It didn't work for me until I did all the steps I listed in that post. I can confirm that it is doable though.

Changing number of flashes for comfort turn signal

1. Go to 09 - Central Electronics
2. Go to Code
3. Go to long coding helper
4. Go to Byte 16
5. Check bit 0 ("Comfort Blinking (Highway Blinking) active")
6. Exit out and click Do It.
7. Click on the Adaptation button in 09 - Central Electronics
8. Open drop-down menu titled "Documented adaptation channels can be selected here"
9. Select "Comfort Turn Signals (cycles)" near bottom of menu
10. In the "New Value" area on the left side of the window, click the "Up" or "Down" buttons to get the number of flashes you'd prefer (range is 1-5 and default is 3). I selected the max 5 because 3 isn't really enough time to signal a lane change or turn.
11. Click the Test button.
12. Click the Save button and exit out.
13. Once you are finished coding everything, disconnect the cable and cycle the ignition (not necessary to start the engine).
14. Go back into ACC mode (or turn the car on).
15. Go into the Settings menu on the MFI, select "Lights & Vision," and select "Factory Setting." Click "OK."
16. Result: A soft pull of the turn signal should cause your turn signal to blink the number of times selected. This should not reset your other MFI settings for Lights & Vision, but double check to make sure.

Just the standard micro can cable is needed. Can be ordered from ross-tech directly or if you're lucky, you can find one for sale in the classifieds. They go fast though.

I have only one thing to add to this. The micro CAN is great for making changes to the cars software but SUCKS for data logging. It cannot do custom block measurment and it's refresh rate is super slow. If you plan on data logging - get the HEX+CAN. The current release of VCDS works fine on our car.

My antenna finally came in the mail today.. 20min later I have a spiffy RNS315 installed.
I only lost one rear trim tab which went flying somewhere... although I think it's still in the car.
not bad for someone who almost always has extra pieces after working on my car...

The antenna had a magnet. But I couldn't find anything metal to stick it to. I just stuffed in down, kind if behind the climatronic. If it rattles I'll go back in a tape or velcro it to something. I didn't notice any noises so far.

Your Car looks first class my man... I will be getting mine very soon.. I do have a question for you..I will be getting the LED tailights for my R. I was wondering what CODE did you use for your R??? I have been seeing in the forum people recoding 18 to 21 or 18 to 20 or 18 to 55 for their GTIs. But i want to know from a 12 US R driver like yourself what code did you use for the setup.. Thanks in Advance my man..

Very cool. Glad the RNS-315 went to a good home. How do you like it so far?

if you get any rattling or think you could be getting better GPS reception, just get some 3M double sided tape and stick it to the underside of the dash. I'd probably do that anyway because I'm an anal SOB.

Do you want LED tails with or without the rear fog lights? If without rear fogs, change byte 18 in 09 - Central Electronics from "20" to "21" If you get the LED tails with rear fogs, change byte 18 to "04"

Yeah, I wish I had known this when I bought the micro-CAN cable. If I had, I would have "splurged" and gotten the hex-CAN.

Yeah.. it's bugging me a little just knowing that it's loose back there, even though I don't hear anything.
I have scary thoughts about it getting wedged against some other wires/plugs and causing a short or something.

It works great. I think the interface is nicer than the stock touchscreen radio. I like that there's a knob that allows you to cycle through the choices and make selections.
I was really surprised how easy everything was to set up once I got the old one out and the 315 in.

I do think the screen is really small... noticably smaller than the radio and your 510. I read someone (maybe you) say the 3D view is almost unusable.. I'd agree with that statement.
But the price couldn't be beat!
I owe you a beer or three!


Also... I really like this integration into the MFA cluster. It even shows ETA! That's like challenging me to beat that time!
