In yet another display of VW de-contenting the NA-spec R, the iPod/Media cable provided with my car does not allow song tagging. The RNS-315 (and the RNS-510 that I have now) both have a feature that allows you to "tag" songs played on the radio or Sirius to your iPod or iPhone. Click the "Extras" button, then click "Tag." You then have the option to download that song the next time you're connected to iTunes. It's a pretty cool feature, but if you don't have the right cable, it won't work.

Until I did some research, I didn't even realize how many different iPod/Media cables VW makes. The one that came with my car was part no. 000-051-446-A. The one that you need for tagging has part no. 000-051-446-J. I ordered the new cable on ebay for $50 shipped. Now, everything works as it should.

Another cool feature that both the RNS-315 and the RNS-510 have (no new cable required) is called Sirius Seek. If you're listening to Sirius radio, you have the ability (also under the "Extras" tab) to mark a song. You then receive an alert any time that song is played on Sirius or regular radio. You can also create alerts any time your favorite team is playing in a game being broadcast on the radio or you can set score alerts.

I'm also a big fan of TLud's car. It's basically this thread that pushed me over the edge on putting down a deposit for a Golf R...

I decided to replace the standard interior lights with LEDs. So, I ended up ordering the LED kit from Bold Sport (linky). Several other Vortex members have installed this in their Rs successfully, so I thought that just ordering the kit would save me some trouble.

The Bold Sport kit comes with the following LEDs (all of which are 6000k in color):

5 x T10 WSW LEDs (2 for the front map lights and 3 for the rear passenger dome lights)
    DSC_0729

    2 x 3LED festoons (for the 2 vanity mirrors)
    DSC_0725

    2 x Style 194 4LED wedges (for the 2 footwell lights)
    DSC_0722

1 x 8LED festoon (for the trunk light)
    DSC_0726

Although it's pretty straightforward, you can follow this DIY for access to the bulbs. Replacing all of the bulbs took me about 45 minutes.

Everything installed as it should until I got to installing the 5 T10 LEDs in the map lights and the rear dome lights. All of these lights have housings with circular holes at the top for the bulb to poke through. I managed to maneuver the T10 LEDs into the front map light housings, but as you can see from the picture below, they just flat out wouldn't fit into the rear dome housing without cutting, which I was completely unwilling to do.

This is the definition of square peg/round hole:

Those who have gotten these T10 LEDs to work apparently had different housings (not sure if this is a 2-door/4-door thing or what).

So, I had to order some Style 194 wedges from LED Wholesalers.

You can also get these from PERFORMANCEleds.com. Apparently, the owner (Shawn, whose username is BetaOp9 and is a MkV R32 owner) is a great guy and the bulbs are qaulity and American made.

In any event, the Style 194 wedges arrived today and got them plugged in without any issues. I couldn't get any pictures to come out very well, but you can check out the pics on Bold Sport's link. It gives the interior an upscale look without being cheesy. I'm a big fan.

TLud is pretty much the man.

HRE's? Check (Baller). Subtle but effective drop with Euro springs? Check (Mature). All the desired engine upgrades? Check (Duh). I could continue, but come on we all know this man's car is perfection.

Thanks to you, too! That's high praise!

The Spurs have put on a clinic this post season. I was actually 2 minutes from the Alamodome (with Siliconrane, as a matter of fact) when the first game against OKC was going on. After the game finished, my hotel was flooded with some very excited Spurs fans.

Any idea what "Door Warning Lights" are? Do we have them?

That was a good game! I was watching it with my dad out at Lake LBJ over the weekend. I'm not a huge basketball fan, but I start to pay attention whenever the Spurs get into the playoffs. I bet the Riverwalk was hopping that night!

I noticed you have the quick drain kit on the catch can... I too bought this but didnt install it yet, where did you run the hose for the quick drain kit? I was thinking of just putting it on and off as I needed to but I am curious as to what you decided to do.

    Thanks!

I installed the valve, but not the hose. I'll wait until the next oil change, or until I have to drain the can and will take care of it then. Routing's gonna be tight.

Thanks, I love this pic, too. It was taken by one of the guys working at the dyno shop. One of my favorites.

Aesthetically, I think you're exactly right about 1/2" more of a drop being perfect, but I liked the feel of the stock setup far too much to do anything more than the Euro springs.

No problem. I've been enjoying it on my car. Makes it much easier to get all the songs I hear on the radio and want to download.

    Good work.
I'll be posting details about my new brake setup this weekend. Next step, is the 42DD down pipe, Stage 2+ and the VWR intake, which I'll do whenever the hardware finally gets here.

After that, I have something very special in mind, which I'm pretty sure no one else has done yet. And then I will be done. Hopefully.

Great info, and awesome car! Was wondering, and maybe it's been discussed, (so sorry for wasting time), but is there compatiblity issues using APR software with say 42DD down pipe? My local shop says probably not, but given that these pipes are new, wanted some feedback. Seems like 42 is first to market with a down pipe (correct me if I'm wrong). Also what do you think of HPA having a tune and down pipe? They are 3 hours away from me, but new to 4 cylinder tuning. Appreciate any input! T
    Cheers!

Great build thread. I'll go against the grain and say the stance as is is PERFECT. I'm not into the slammed look neither for looks and definitley not for the ride (maybe I'm getting too old).

How are you finding the 510? I played with one in an Eos at the dealership. The speed (or lack thereof) would drive me crazy. Is it better in the R?

Both the APR down pipe and the 42DD down pipe are 3" designs with resonators and 200-cell high flow cats. Given the AWD making things tight in that area, I doubt there is much difference in how they are shaped either. As a result, I don't think there will be any issues using APR software with the 42DD down pipe, but I like the way you think. You're anticipating where I'm going with this.

Thanks for the compliments and I agree.

The only respect that the 510 feels noticeably slower than the 315 is at startup. It takes a few more seconds during the initial boot-up. I have the latest hardware revision and the latest firmware, and I really don't notice any lag with mine. I was pretty nervous about this given the complaints, and I was happy not to notice any issues in this respect.

Thanks for the info re 42 DD down pipe. Is it possible (and has anyone) gone nitrous? As you can see my engine knowledge is severly limited. My dad worked for Chrysler, and nobody was modding the K car or minivan at the time!

Anyone looking for an alternative to the Blendmount should check this out:

RADAR LASER DETECTOR BRACKET MIRROR MOUNT

It is not as elegant as the Blendmount, but it is less than half the cost and free shipping. I just ordered one from the link above. They have different mounts for different brands/models. I'll post something when I get mine and install it.

TLUD - sorry if this is a thread-jack, but your thread is where I found the Blendmount.

Good find but I'd like to hear TLud's opinion on whether that attachment will stay solid on our oddly shaped mirror stem. I was zip tying a radar cord up there and noticed that unless the tie was placed exactly against the round base or the mirror, it wouldn't stay put.
