Hello VW Acolyte,

This is not a typo, but you will find that if you look at European application lists, the 50mm strut is the one used on many of the MK5/6 platform based vehicles.

To use your HR preference, check out their Euro App list: http://www.h-r.com/de/f_produktsuche.php

Put VW in the first drop down, and then Golf 5 in the second and hit Suche

You will see that there are 2 different "Federbeinaufnahme" AKA Strut bodies:

ø50mm & ø55mm

In this case they show one of each strut size for almost every application.

I do not know their purchasing practices at VW, but it is possible they had a surplus of the smaller ø50mm shocks and spindles in their system and it was cheaper to use - I really cannot say.

Your research looks to be spot on with what we have found as well, thanks for the independent confirmation!

Ah ok, I see what you are saying. That is a bit annoying. But, it appears, at least from what I have seen, that all Mk5's in America got the 55mm, or I'm assuming its the 55mm. Now I just to to find out which ones I have to make sure. Being that I have the SEL Sport, I would imagine it would be the 55mm.

This was our experience as well with the MK5's. It was only the Jetta S so far that we have seen with the 50, but we figure it is better safe than sorry.

Nothing worse than waiting 5-7 business days for a delivery and finding out that you have the wrong kit!

I'm new to all this.. Can someone explain the difference between coilovers and plain lowering springs? It's obvious that you can adjust the coilovers, but is it easy to go from really low back to a decent height for comfortable travel?

coilovers can typically go lower than just springs. Some people replace the shocks/struts when going with springs where as thats not the case with coils, they arent needed.

First thanks to Type-s Syndrome for posting the pics of his Jetta!

Second, I see a lot of questions that I will answer as they came in:

what kind of adjustments do these coilovers have?

The Solo Werks S1's are height adjustable only, with preset shock dampening - Similar to an OEM sport suspension.

I'm new to all this.. Can someone explain the difference between coilovers and plain lowering springs? It's obvious that you can adjust the coilovers, but is it easy to go from really low back to a decent height for comfortable travel?

Other than the height adjustment that you have pointed out, the biggest difference between a coilover kit and the lowering springs is that the shocks/dampers that are included with the kit are setup to work at the lowered range that the manufacturer has specified.

They are normally shortened in comparison to the OEM shocks, and therefore provide appropriate shock travel and therefore provide a more controlled ride quality than you can get from a lowering spring - as well as a much larger lowering range.

The Upper Mount/Bearing assembly is a wearable part that can degrade over time/miles, and is a pretty standard part to replace every 30-60K miles. It is also popular to get for some that like to pull their front struts in and out quickly, as you need to remove the OEM ones from your factory suspension when you switch to coilovers.

In the case of the MK6 Jetta, I would say No they are not necessary at this time depending on your mileage and if you have any issues right now with any suspension noises during turning.

Although I do have have many customers that purchase them with the coilover kit so they can keep the factory pieces in as one unit, and not need to use a spring compressor for installation.
