Got the recaro proride in Riley, yesterday. It fits easily in the passat wagon with no issues.
Here is a quick test fitting pic.

Thanks guys! I found the pic online at amazon and I think it should be fine rear facing in the passat wagonNot to mention, my husband will be deployed for about half of the next year, so having adequate space for the front passenger seat won't really be a problem anyway.

i think i've leaned away from the proride for a new born/infant. i think im going to go Britax travel system combo till he's big enough to stand on own, then purchase proride. feel bad knowing ill have to wake baby everytime pulling out of car with proride to carry inside wherever i am.
#74
^ I think that's a really smart decision. When they are under 6 months, it seems like they always sleep in the car and it would definitely be frustrating having to wake the baby EVERY time you got in and out of the car.

My son in his Proride installed my 08 rabbit fits in my wife's 2011 Jetta also.
Sent from a phone booth.

^^^looks good, how old is your son? curious when i can move it forward facing.
#77
The new guideline (as of earlier this year IIRC) is to keep them rear facing until 2 years old if they can fit fairly comfortably, but it's a suggestion, not a mandate.
We kept our first rear facing until she was 1. Our second made it until 18 months.
You can check your state child seat laws here.
Rear facing for a long as possible is the safest, though. I believe Sweden keeps their kids rear facing until 4 and they have the lowest child injury per car accident in the world. Though they have access to seat designs that are more amenable to staying rear facing as the child grows.
#78
Yeah, we looked at some of the "euro" designs and were considering that - but jeez, our first was such a terror in the car by the time we turned her around that I can't imagine forcing her to sit backwards till she is four. The happy button gets pressed once they are sitting forward like everyone else and are a "part" of the car-ride experience.
#79
So i ended up going with Britax B-Safe in kiwi for first one. i will go recaro most likely once hes a little bigger. down to 7 weeks before hes here.
#81
Golf..... how long have you had her in there? how old is she in that pic? she looks to fit snug.
#82
We put her in @ 6 months. Reason why we waited so long is the fact that rear facing care seat+2doors+ my fet @ss = Not gonna work. So i sold my GTI end of August and infant seat was retired. She is 9months old now and that pic was taken 2 weeks ago, BUT she is big baby so it might be missleading

Care to share? We're expecting a new arrival around spring of next year. I've been looking at everything and it's so overwhelming. No idea on what to look for.![]()

We have used (and been happy with):
1: Graco Snugride 32 infant carrier/carseat(uses base) - Both girls used this.
2: Recaro Proride (Starts out rear facing, can switch to front) - Both girls used this - daughter #2 is in it now.
3: Recaro ProSport (front face only) - Daughter #1 is in this now.
You'll get all kinds of responses and directions. Buy what seems to work for you and fits in the car easily from a well-rated mfg, and you'll be fine.![]()

at the time of my first child my WRX sedan had very limited room for a rear facing "do it all" seat - especially with many of the huge seats these days. we were able to learn about the combi coccoro, which is a compact convertible seat that works great in smaller sedans. it's quite popular in the subaru community and i was able to accommodate it rear facing in my WRX. i used this seat once my son outgrew the pumpkin seat/base solution. another great feature of the coccoro seat is that it is designed to use the top tether in the rear facing position - a feature that is not common on many seats today.
now with the arrival of my daughter, the coccoro has become her seat and my son is in a diono radian r100 front facing seat. the r100 works rear or front facing from 5-100lbs, so it really is a"do it all" seat. and of course after replacing my WRX with a larger sedan i have more room for a rear facing seat.
so, in short: i would have simply bought 2 radian r100 seats and one pumpkin seat/base had i known we were going to have two kids and been done.
NOTE: the amount of marketing and use of scare tactics to sell car seats is just crazy. the key to any car seat you buy is to make sure it is installed correctly and used correctly - THAT is what makes a seat safe.![]()

I would recommend getting an infant seat to start. Those are the ones that clip into the base that stays in the car all the time (and often clips into a matching stroller). Babies fall asleep ALL the time when they are little and it's so easy and convenient to not have to wake them up to take them out of the car. As far as picking out an infant seat, just check the weight/height limits on the seats. The seats that come in combination with a stroller usually have a lower weight rating - something around 20lbs-25lbs, which means that if you have a BIG baby, you will outgrow the seat more quickly. We went with a Graco Snugride 35, which had a weight rating up to 35lbs, but didn't come with a stroller or anything. I'm glad we went that route because my daughter was over 10lbs at birth and has stayed big.
Once they get older and heavier, it would make sense to invest in a convertible car seat (a car seat that can be installed both rear facing and forward facing). The new recommendation is that children rear face for two years due to safety, which is why I would invest in a convertible seat versus just a forward facing seat. Of course, that part is up to you.![]()

Yep, thats what I've been looking for. A convertible system so that I can take them out of the car and onto a stroller without waking them up. Ideally a system that also has a larger seat availble for when they outgrow the infant size. My sister has a 3yo and I'll be taking her peg perego viaggio, I just need to find the stroller for it. Then for the wife we've been looking for a full system. many thanks for those who have commented.

you can get seats with anti-rebound bar now, big thing in europe, apperantly just picking up here. saw a new model at baby blossom the other day when I was buying a new stroller. cant remember the name of the seat but found this one on amazon, its a infant seat and the other one was a rear facing infant to 2 year seat.
they also have this stroller for the ones that want the latest weird thing.

Damn that stroller is $850. Car seat looks like the Britax one.
#94
seat pictured is britax, the new one they got is from european market. Once I go to pickup my new stroller I will find out the name, its aluminum frame or something like that. and yes the stroller is about $800

The goofy strollers look neat but seem horrible to use in practice. Our neighbor's with kids about the same age as ours got one(an uppababy, not the one posted- but similar design and money) - and they've already replaced at least two wheels that broke on easy sidewalks, etc. They maintain It also is impractical for carrying some of the stuff that goes with the kid.
I can only see spending that kind of coin on jogging strollers. We have two bobs (single and double) - and these things are tanks, and appear to have good resale when the time comes. An added benefit is that I pressure wash them clean.![]()

Am interested to know about the Proride and Coccoro in terms of fitting into a small car, my A4, rear facing where I am 6-2. I need a new seat for him and I have been driving around a bit cramped up front, would like to get some space back.
they're steppin' on my rhythm and they're stealin' all my lines

We bought the cheapest stroller we could find. I think we've used it 3-4 times max and he's 2 years old now and no longer interested in sitting in it so we're gettting rid of it.
But, we bought a Chariot Cougar and use that ALL the time outdoors and a couple times at the mall. Used it attached to our bikes, for running, and with the stroller wheels. Well worth the investment and when we are done with it, will sell it for close to original price since they hold their value well.

i used the combi coccoro in my WRX sedan and it worked well - even in rear facing mode. highly recommended for smaller sedans!
another major plus of this seat is that it is approved for top tether use in rear facing mode - a rarity for most seats here in the US.

I just ordered the Coccoro for the A4. We have the Diono Radian in the Highlander and its a bit of a squeeze in RF position with me driving but the wife has it now and its no issue. I like the idea of a one stop seat but there is no way in hell that thing is fitting into the A4 in the center.

sorry, was referring to a middle install using the LATCH connectors. in my 06 the manual stated a center install was not preferred (due to the hump in the seat), but if that was the only choice you can use the seat belt. what you can't do is use the inboard LATCH connector from each side.
...now, that being said - tons of people do this anyway. your A4 may be a completely different situation.
good luck.![]()
