    2) bolting in creates perferation that can and do, fail when forces are too high, welding (when done well, and those do look good ) are the strong points not the weak ones. There are pictures floating around of cars on there roofs where the bolt-in locations failed and punched through the floor, scary!

    3) the locations for the rear bars are way too close to the center line and too far from the rear strut towers to do much of anything, the floor between will be stiffer but does nothing for the chassis or handling.

The rest depends on the type of tubing, the gauge and the hardware used.......etc.

If you do drive this car without a helmet, at the very least you must have a 5 point harness and fixed back race seat, anything less puts you at great risk for a head injury.

Its a free country but if I can help someone from making a mistake I think it's important to mention it.

I'll also mention, people that do go to the track in a street car with a bolt in cage that's "for show" are kind of made fun of!
    1. How is 1-1/4" inches away from the roof "much too far away"?

    2. Im not sure if you build cages professionally as you obviously know the nuts and bolts of it, but the guy who built these things is no joke and knows his sh!t backward forward and every other direction. Ever heard of Patrick Motorsports in Phoenix? One of the premier builders of race prepped Porsches in the country? Take a look at this 914 build he did for Jagermeister:

    http://www.patrickmotorsports.com/project/54/

    3. The pictures must be giving you a false sense of where the bolt in points are. The plates sit 5" away from the rear interior qp's. How is that too far towards the center? Listen, I appreciate your concern because its obvious that it comes from a good place, but I have far more sensibilities than to let some hacker rip apart my $40k car that is only 2 months old. They know their stuff and like any good cage builder, is not the biggest fan of bolt in's. That being said, this is in all likelihood the best bolt in cage you can buy for a Golf.

Hardware is ARP Fasteners. Metal is DOM. Face of main hoop is only 6 inches behind the B-pillar. If it turns into a track car I will have a full weld-in made along with a proper fixed-back seat and 5pt harness. Im not going to the track with this particular cage in the car so your point about "real race track guys" that may potentially make fun of me is of no concern. Also Im not one for giving a crap what negative people have to say about anything I've done to the car. Its not their money and its not their vision.

Furthermore and in conclusion, it will be painted matte black exactly because I don't want it to be "showy". Im after a secondary layer of safety for aggressive backroads driving, its just that simple.

Classy responses as usual. Can't wait to see this beast when you're back in the Bay Area. I'd love to snap some shots of our Rs together after my Volks arrive in a few months, that is if my modest R is worthy of being in the same frame. Funny, my poor R....what it could have been if I had wanted your Rising Blue.

Brakes are the side of performance cars that seem to be addressed last, which is a pity, because late braking through corners is almost as much fun as adding HP!

Unfotunately two months since they didn't have any in stock. It's worth the wait in my book. Not many people will have Volks on the R. Down to grab a drink or something before then if you're around.

Definitely and I think you're right about the Volks. Good call. What color, size and style do you have on back order?

    NOTES FROM THE ROAD: ch.14

This may be the last installment of NFTR for about a week or so. As all the new BSH products are getting fixtured and I can't really shoot anything at the shop while that is happening.

So here is the 14th chapter which is a DIY that will hopefully serve one of you well in your mod endeavors. The VW emblem on the hood is out of control big. I didn't want that on the car, but I did want the .:R emblem since it's a point of pride when looking at this thing. So this is how I plan to keep the .:R, delete the VW emblem and also notch-fill the hood.

Step 1: Remove the OEM grille make yourself a simple masking tape template of where the R logo sits on that OEM grille

Step 2: Order up a badgeless JOM grille from Black Forest Industries, and transfer the tape template from the OEM to JOM grille. Also use a torx (t-20?) bit to pull off the .:R emblem from the OEM piece.

Step 3: Use a cutting wheel (after you've masked the cut area to prevent splintering) to cut a spherical groove in the middle bottom slat.

    Step 4: Spherical grooviness.

Step 5: Press the .:R emblem in between the tight fitting slats. That sounded dirty, but its true.

Step 6: Get yourself an appropriately sized fender washer and spray primer it in matte black on the outside facing side. Slide it into the spherical groove cut and retighten the torx head screw.

Step 7: Test fit that sucker and then yoink the hood to go to body and paint. Make a Flavor-Flavor style medallion out of your binned VW logo. Done. Easy.

*= As always I claim no reponsibility of the outcome of your wild antics with power tools, but I do wish you the best of luck and maybe toss on a pair of goggles for good measure.

VR G2 19x8.5 et 45 in Formula Silver. I'm honestly not sure how the six spoke will look on the Golf R because it is not a style I ever see on this car. But I love the wheel itself, and Formula Silver is one color that I think will go really well with CSG. The wheel only ways 20.2 pounds, and the pricing for a Volks monoblock forged wheel is pretty damn good for their quality.

    Couldn't agree more. Nice choice!

Perhaps in the future, but for right now it'll be the BFI smoked clear side markers. Maybe get them tinted limo black for a slightly different look.

Yes. Its really not that much different than the OEM piece in terms of quality. They both have small tabs that you need to be cognizant of during the install process. Line everything up correctly once and snap it all together. Pretty simple if you give it a few extra minutes of pre-planning. Deff recommend the grille now that I've seen one in the flesh,.... errr plastic.

So, uhh, Jason.. I'm starting to feel like you did. Having damn near 20 boxes of parts waiting at home for installation

I can't wait to see the rest of this build. I'm literally waiting on a couple things from this just so I can continue with my build.

Im down with GTGs and it seems like there is a bunch of R's out here in the Bay Area. So maybe we can all do an Alices run with the TT guys in June sometime? The car has another 2 weeks of surgery, minimum. Then roll out to Wuste, so mid June? Whaddaya think?

My girls parents live in Woodside. I usually get out there 2 or 3 times a year. I would really love to get my R on some of the roads I have ridden my bike on around there. You guys should try going to Bucks on Woodside road, its a rather ridiculous/good place to hang and eat. If you haven't been its worth a look.

Thanks. I'll check it out. I used to ride my CBR up there all the time. It's actually more fun in the Golf because I'm not as concerned about coming around those corners into stopped traffic or a moose.
