My 2010 Tiguan came with an oil filter coded: 06J 115 403 B

    After 1st. service it was replaced by: 06J 115 403 C

    Now, dealer has in stock: 06J 115 403 J (old) and 06J 115 403 M (new)

In a couple of years VW made 4 changes on a simple oil filter! Why?

Not an engineer or anything, but seen a fair number of oil filters in my time and the ones VW are using now aren't your every day oil filter.. few moving parts, fan blades, and ball bearings which all = 10k oil changes...
