Thread: New build adding FT04 etc. to my 1.8t powered Porsche 356 replica!

  1. 02-08-2012 03:30 PM #1
Finally taking the plunge and upgrading my turbo to an FT04T setup. I will post progress here.

    Plans:
Bug Doug at FT endlessly until I understand just what to get. Done.
    Order FT04 setup. Done.
Order some Green Giants. Not done.
Order an AWIC system. Done, got a 350HP kit from Frozen Boost on the way. It should fit.
Decide on a local fabricator to redo some piping. Not found, any suggestions for the Olympia, WA area would be appreciated.
Decide on how to tune and with what ECU. Choices in hand are the Bosch 3.8.3 already working in the car and supplied lightly chipped by Eurospec with the engine build in 2008, a spare ME7 box I have or a Megasquirt 2e system I have with a wideband innovate O2 sensor.

more to come as I progress.

when I try to imbed links to my picasa photos they do not work and when I try to attach pics I get a message that I do not have the permissions to do so. FAQ is no help as it references creating albums with a menu I don't think exists. I used to be able to post pics.

Received the AWIC stuff today and it exceeds my expectations in terms of mechanical quality. Frozen Boost does a nice job sourcing the AWIC itself and the Shaman radiator and Bosch pump are solid. Can't wait to pipe it in place.

Going to get a Moroso 2Q reservoir (Aluminum) with fill cap and sight tube to add to the AWIC system. Anyone got something similar they want to sell or donate(?) to the project? Also going to relocate the round overflow tank and may just go with two of the same cans. I don't use the in tank temp sensor so this will be easy-peasy.

    Gawd... I love it.

Can you please please post a link to an album with LOTS of pics of that?

My all time dream car is a beige 1954 356 with white interior and Porsche crest moon caps....

I will likely never own an original, but there are some awesome tube frame replicas out there. Id love to slip a 1.8 in one!

I'm guessing it's running every delete under the sun to stuff it in there

Lots of deletes of course and the car has no instrument cluster or real VAG ignition key so the ECU was a challenge.

Here is the bag of parts for my AWIC install. Missing the pump bracket and the remote fill cap which are both on order. Decided not to go with a reservoir as this holds plenty of liquid and is always low pressure so expansion is not an issue. Have to decide now on pump control sense point and wether it will be proportional (PWM) or on-off. Simple is good and I will probably just switch it on with ignition.

The cooler and fan will probably replace the existing S4 IC that is currently behind the RHS rear wheel.

To say... Do a timing belt change can you pull the whole rear clip off?

Nope, no rear clip, this glass body is all one piece bonded to the main frame rails with aerospace adhesives and big headed aircraft rivets. I have not thought about a timing belt change but suspect the easiest is to lift the car up, drop the engine out the bottom, change the belt and reverse the process to reinstall. One could support the engine on a jack and remove the tail mount and all exhaust and IC crossover plumbing and maybe do a TB change but it would be in a very tight space and from under the car.

Drove up to meet Jake, owner of a fabrication and tuning business here in WA yesterday. Other than scratching the sh*t out of the side of the car in my garage, it was a very good trip. Nice day for a tops down cruise with heat blasting and a wooly cap.

Jake looked over the project, suggested a few possible changes, test drove the car and came back with a big SEG on his face. Said, 'the steering is responsive, isn't it.' Glad I stayed at the shop.

Anyway, as soon as the turbo parts get here, Jake will start on the install and fabrication then on to the tuning with the MS I have. Did I mention he has 5 years of MS under his belt? I saw several of his MS installs and they (1) worked well, and (2) the attention to detail in the wiring was superb.

If you are in western Washington, and need fabrication or MS tuning, you might want to check out Jake. His website is http://www.jrmfabrication.com/

In discussing the mounting of the frozen boost AWIC in my car, Jake, the fab man, brought up the always interesting question of using Laminova cores in a custom intake manifold. I was holding the FB AWIC and an idea started percolating:

Why not slice of one end cap, which is on the long dimension and TIG weld it directly to a similarly butchered intake manifold? The throttle body would be mounted on the remaining AWIC inlet and you would have a low flow resistance 'poor man's Laminova!'

I'm ready to start cutting and welding, what do you think?

I'm wondering if this will be good for equal flow characteristics to each cylinder..

    Awesome idea though
