It's going to be ~$310M. I figure divide that in half to get the immediate payout, and half again for taxes, we're looking at ~$75M. Nice little pay day. Wonder how long I'd have to wait for a 458 Spyder to come in?

And in before 10 retards brag about "I never play the lotto" and "it's a tax on people who are bad at math"; I can afford the $5 I'm going to waste on tickets.

I asked my wife one time what she would do if she hit the Powerball. She took a long pause and said... I'd pay off all my bills.

That's when I knew I married the wrong woman.

I buy a ticket a few times per year.

You can't win, if you don't play.

Buy one for me and we'll split the winnings 75-25.

I hate the lotto. I rarely buy a ticket, and then I am "surprised" when I don't win ****.

Well, someone has to win eventually- can't win if you don't play! Anytime we stop to get gas in a podunk town off I-81, we always buy lottery tickets because those always seem to be the places that sell winning tickets

I always get an EZ pick. I'm pretty sure that's why I never win.

I do play the lottery... 5 person pool at work and the occasional ticket on my lonesome... but I don't get the whole "ooh, the jackpot's high, I'll buy now!" thing. If, say, twice as many people are buying tickets when the jackpot is high, you're at a higher chance of splitting that winning ticket with another. Further, even the minimum jackpots are so much money that it's no less worthwhile for the same (miniscule) odds of winning.

    Am I missing something?

yes. regardless of how many people buy the ticket, the odds of winning are so minute that its indifferent if an extra 1000000 people play.

Yeah, I used to get a powerball ticket every time I filled up my tank. 2-3 times a month. Then they raised it to $2. I said to my self, F those guys I'm only playing if it's $200mil. Haha, that'll show them. I'm getting one on my way home.

Me and a few friends play once a week for S&G, and we talk about all the crazy stuff we will do.
Buy a huge plot of land and build houses for all our close friends and family so nobody has to travel far to hang out.
Build an enormous garage, like 15 bays, 2 deep and high ceilings with lifts.
Build a huge warehouse to put all the cars in we are about to buy.
Buy stupid amounts of cars we have always wanted.
Build our own brewery on site.
Build a helicopter landing pad, but not have a helicopter because we would just get in trouble.

Travel the world. Buy houses all over.

Then of course order pizza and give the delivery guy a $100 bill and tell him to keep the change, every time.

stack---take the annuity. if you take the lump sum, youre leaving millions on the table.
    310M over 30 years or 75M today?
anyone under the age of 70 should take the annuity. and yes, you can leave the rest of the payments to someone in a will in the event of your untimely death.

Annuity is for suckers. I'll take my $75 million in straight cash thank you...and I'll be the cause of my untimely death via hookers and blow and fast cars.

I've thought about this long and hard. When I win the lottery my lifestyle will change and will probably die within a short period of winning, so I'm still get the cash in one lump sum.

I bought one last week (didn't win). I'll probably buy one for this weekend's drawing.

I was trying to think of the first thing I'd do with the money after I collected. I was torn between buying a house, going on vacation, or buying a car.

I'm not sure I understand this. Yes, they are extreme. However, there are two options:

    1. Play/Don't play and not win - Your monetary situation goes unchanged (I suppose the loss of the money spent on the ticket should be counted)
    2. Play and win - Hell, even if taxes were 80%, I'd still be sitting $10-20+ million dollars prettier

    I'll take the latter

    30 years for 310million.

That's over 10 million a year. Why the hell do you need a lump sum? Even after taxes, I can afford basically anything.

I'd buy...cars, a computer, some camera stuff, my parents morgage, sister's tuition. Certainly invest a cool million or so. Finish my degree.

All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated and well supported in logic and argument than others.

Right, but I think the scale is much higher than that. Information is sparse, but I've seen "Sales for a Powerball drawing can vary from $16 million to $200 million." which would be 8m-100m tickets, and I saw a news report about a big jackpot win last year that claimed 2.3m winning tickets were sold overall that draw, which based on the 1:32 overall odds of winning would have meant 70-some million tickets sold.

Obviously the odds are miniscule regardless, but is your $2 not worth it if you could "only" win $40m? Even as a lump sum with tax all at once I could live off the base jackpot for the rest of my life.

    Taxes.

Also, if you get the lump sum you can invest the money as you see fit and it's guaranteed in your pocket. Further, you can put it in trust so nobody can touch it if you ever get sued.

Because I don't trust the money will keep coming forever. And I'd want to give my family $1M each and couldn't do that if I was only getting a lousy $10M/yr. And really, who cares?

Are you legally required to give your name to anyone but powerball? Can you somehow claim anonymously?

I'm sure through word of mouth your name would get out to a degree, but I'd want to keep it on lock down as much as I can.

If I won, I would pay off student loans, pay off my house and then promptly destroy it and move out of this horrible state. Probably buy a Porsche or 7 somewhere in there then travel all over.
