I recently bought this transmission that supposedly fit in my Jetta. However, it didn't. The Volkswagen parts department near me identified it as a transmission for a 1998-2001 Eurovan.
I'm selling for $500. The guy I bought it from says it has 70,000 miles on it.

Where on earth did you get that thing? If you're in the USA the only place you will find any buyer for it "close by" would be in Mexico cause the number on there would indicate this is for a Sharan (never sold in the US) and it would not be compatible with any models here either!

Just compare that bell housing to a Eurovan transmission:
The engine angle is totally different from most VWs in the Eurovans.
Also note the transmission mount location that is STRAIGHT under on the Eurovan transmissions:
That's where this mount (laying on top here) bolts to:

Can you check this on your transmission?
The code(s) that look like this:
At the RED arrow:
The YELLOW arrow should show where the actual part number for the transmission is, the number you showed above is only the part number for the bell housing as such.
