ok so i wasnt sure if this would be more appropriate here or the fabrication forum. here goes.

i bought the car 5 years ago and it had a 1776, ingle 110 cam, and dual single barrel carbs. the pans had been replaced 17years prior as well as some other body work to clean her up.

when i got it. (horrible cell phone pictures)

    with my gti

i had that motor in there for about two years and started running into some issues and i had an aba/jh that was slated to go into my cabriolet but sold the car and decided to swap in a motor i knew a bit more about as far as maintaining and troubleshooting. good decision or not the jury is still out on this one.

    round one of carbs

was way over my head with this one.

round two this was a learning experience

not sure what my logic was or why i thought this would work. it wasnt terrible but not right still. like i said carb learning experiment

    round three this worked
    weber dges 38/38
    http://s61.photobucket.com/albums/h5...4-05-15_26.mp4

here it is on the way to dubdash

got there had the exhaust break. some real cool guy from the turbobricks forums had a harbor freight stick welder. and one of the guys helping put on the show had a generator on his truck and was so kind as to let me use it.

    fast forward two years.
I've got some serious soft spots in the floors, i'm looking for something a little more fun than the 2L, my brakes are drums all the way around, the trans is tired and the gti that used to be the home for my vrt is non-existent.

i have had idea for awhile but never actually thought i would start it and then i went to unbolt the floors from the body for some repair work.

the floors had been welded to the body top and bottom.
i keep asking myself how i didn't notice this in the first 4-5 years i owned the car.
split the seam to see what the insides looked like

not looking good so i went for it

i no longer felt bad about starting to follow through with my idea so i started bracing

    and cutting

    and finally separate.

heres the way i want it to sit when it's all done.

this is my introduction to the journey i am about to take.

finishing up the last touches on my blueprints then it's time to build.

On the surface it doesn't look too bad. Would have been a prime candidate for what i'm doing. I think that would be the other year that shares the weird 4 wheel cylinder front brake configuration that mine had. (2per side at 100$ each.)

And thanks guys I hope it turns out as nice as i've got it pictured in my head. I worried I was gonna get less of a welcoming to the project than I did.

don't toss the pan for her. shove it in the corner of the garage somewhere...you'd be surprised how small a pan section is when there's nothing on it...not to mention how light it is. keep that. nothing worse than regret. well lindsey lohan, but that's a whole other bag

also don't do anything that can't be undone. you're playing around with a very rare car here in the states....toss in the fact that you're in Ohio and it's even more rare. the condition isn't as hateful as other aircooled stuff running around that's for sure

i'm in to see what you are thinking in regards to your pan setup...i don't see a frame table anywhere in your cluttered garage and that home depo lincoln welder isn't on a cart or (from what i can see) hooked up to gas....so to me being a fab guy you look a little unprepared for what i think you're about to undertake...no offense

i wish you the best of luck but keep in mind she won't be very fast with a vr swap. your power to weight ratio will go out the window and someone with a mild built aircooled 2 liter motor will pretty much be able to easily keep up with you. a mazda rotary motor would school you and a suby motor would eat you alive. just things to keep in mind if you're wanting to build something that would be an outright killer

Yeah no frame table just yet. Lincoln is on a cart with gas and there is a tig on the other side of the car plus I have Full access to these at work.

And its not "just" a Vr

And there's been a little work inside too.

I build industrial machinery and robotic work cells for a living so i'm not some teenager who thinks he's gonna build a racecar. I just wanna have fun. Its already past the point of no return for me. But I thank you for your comments.

I would agree on saving the pan. Its got the title number on it. IMO I would just rework the OG pan. You can get new sections for under $500 and you would be money ahead especially if you end up selling it. Not to many ACVW people will buy a ACVW. Without a pan under it, especially a notch as they are hard to find in good shape..

Other than that good luck on the build mang...

    well then...

and you have to understand i am really anal retentive about a clean garage...and my boss is worse than me...shop floor you can eat off of so that's what i looked at right away and formed my opinion by.

i love your mill...we're working with an old bridgeport with only X and Y digital read out and she's completely manual...have to do everything by hand with it. and i spy a miller 211...have that at home....i love that welder even though we use nothing but lincolns at work

and i stand by my motor statements. you could build the ever living crap out of that vr but it's still a vr....they're not light. but don't get me wrong i love that motor....heck i have a vanagon that's getting one as we speak. but if i truly wanted to make my vanagon go i would have opted for a suby motor...or a hopped up 1.8t

either case, carry on. looking forward to seeing what you have planned

PS...please keep the pan. penicillin can take care of lindsey lohan but nothing can cure missing type III pan

yeah, my engine is staying stock til it blows up. when/if it does, it'd get a subbie engine.

you are going to need wheelie bars on your notch.

Yeah the pan already had an incorrect vin. The right one is in the glovebox. I saved what I could of the pans but after having to cut them off the rockers then removing the fiberglassed sections there really wasn't a whole lot left. And what was left was more like a nightshade than sheet metal. I'm trying to retain as many of the factory body mounts as possible to ensure that someday if someone saw fit it could go back to its former self. But that somebody wont be me.

Moving on. I realize the weight gains of a Vr. (I have an slc with a manual rack i know how heavy it is) We don't need to keep coming back to that topic. I already had a semi built one sitting on a stand. plus its a motor I know and have boxes of parts on the shelf to maintain a long happy life. And I love the sound. Moving the weight farther forward will change the attitude greatly. With the 2L i4 in back if it so much as drizzled the car wanted to swing like a mace. . As far as power goes if I wanted to be the fastest car I wouldn't be building this. There would probably be a t-bucket with a blown 502 running e85 in its place.

Got some suspension goodies today on another note.

    Started into the frame today.

And got the base layer all cut.

I also got about half of my tube cut for the trans tunnel. But wont have pictures of that till after I start welding. And i've gotta build a frame table first...

those are most def not made for a notchback. They are revalveble (sp?) And rebuildable penske shocks, you would find them used on super mods, circle track, course cars. What are you looking to do?

So here I am roughly 10hrs into the chassis.
front section cut and tunnel structure cut

Working on the rear section next... and i'll do tunnel bracing after a good portion of the welding is done...

If you have a spec sheet for your frame, you should post it somewhere. I could see this being a pretty awesome resource for someone wanting to do this.

Looking forward to see how this works out

That's because we aren't as poor as Michigan, yet mother nature still $hits on us for like half the year, and we drink more beer than any other state. So there's lots of time to bottle feed ideas and builds.

After I get the rear end finalized I think that can be arranged. I've gotta get my engine mated to the trans and verify some dimensions before I finish that up. I don't want this copied unless its right.
