Heard you were at S2 today unfortunately they don't have the software that's on my car yet REVO is still working on the switching ability.

Yeah that's what Pat was saying, S2 seems like a great shop, I'm trying to be patient to wait for the tune, but I'm stoked. He was saying possibly next week or so. I'm itching to get it done, but would rather wait until they have the kinks worked out. How do you like it so far?

The tune is good so far, it pulls really hard. I don't really drive that much to know how gas mileage is, S2 can only guess they don't know when the tune will be released. Revo really did a lot of testing on my car but now they're working on the SPS switching stuff.

So far, loving it. She is almost too smooth. It doesn't have the more visceral feel that my R32 has and doesn't have the sound, of course. She is faster and handles better. It is a much better car than the R32. The only thing I wish it had was a sunroof but at the price I paid, I'll learn to live without it.

Got the coilovers installed today @ S2 dynamics. Very happy with them so far. Waiting for them to settle and will re-adjust. Sorry for the crappy iPhone pic, I'll get proper shots up soon.

To be completely honest I don't remember. Pat told me but I was so happy with it I wasn't paying attention. Ask your brother, I think he is the one that helped with the job! If you want me to take any measurements from the ground or whatever you need let me know I can get those for you tonight when I get home.

I picked up a 2 door Rising Blue R yesterday from Darcars in Silver Spring. They had 2 Rising Blue loaded Rs and a base 2 door Carbon Steel Grey that they just got in last week. The other blue and the one I bought sold within hours of each other.

So far, I love it. It "checked the boxes" on a lot of things I wanted out of my next car. I traded in my BMW 135i on the deal. The 135i was a beast but the car payment was too high.

^^^^^ Be interested to hear your comparison of the 135i vs the R after you have a little seat time. I cross-shopped the 135i as well, and am an old BMW guy, but wound up getting the R instead for all the reasons we already know. Congrats and enjoy your R.

Power: The 135i has tons of power in the low to mid-range. It feels more violent than the R does when accelerating and it was definitely faster in a straight line on dry pavement. The clutch seems very light in the R and the shifter seems very smooth possibly bordering on being vague. The 135i's clutch and transmission were awesome. My wife seems to be able to drive the R more easily than she could manage my 1er though.

I liked being able to disable dynamic traction control (DTC) and dynamic stability control (DSC) completely in the 1er. It seems we can only disable traction control in the R... and maybe not even completely. BMW came out with a software update about a year ago that, I think, made the DTC and DSC too sensitive and pretty invasive. I usually would drive around with DTC turned off because I was tired of the computer cutting power every time I wanted the car to move.

Handling: I think the R handles better than the 135i; probably due to a combination of the R's wider wheelbase, AWD, and firmer suspension. The 135i's rear end was "jittery" when cornering or going over rough/uneven/bumpy roads. It had a tendency to hop around. I don't sense any of that in the R.

The 135i understeers pretty badly in stock form. It can be fixed with a performance suspension and M3 bits that just bolt on. It can be an expensive fix for an already expensive car though.

The 135i, like all BMW's, comes with run flat tires. They are harsh, they don't handle well, and they wear out quickly. A lot of owners replace them immediately with better handling traditional tires. Again, an expensive fix for an already expensive car.

Tuning: The 135i is super easy to tune. The R is apparently also easy to tune. The inline 6 twin-turbo N54 engine and the single turbo "Twin Power" N55 engines make tons of power with a simple ECU flash. 350-400 hp is not uncommon with a tune and other minor bolt ons. More can be had out of the N54 with turbo upgrades. I'm not sure if anyone has come out with a turbo upgrade for the N55 yet. I had an N54 in mine.

Electronics: The BMW iDrive w/Nav seems superior to the VW's Nav system, in my opinion. It is more intuitive and easier to control while driving. My opinion may change when I become more familiar with the VW system, but for now I kind of miss the iDrive.

Interior volume: The 135i has a larger trunk compared to the R when both cars have all 4 seats in their normal positions. The R becomes a cavern if you put the rear seats down. The 135i's seats can fold down as well, but it isn't a hatchback. The rear seat of the R can fit 3 people tightly. It is impossible to get more than 2 people into the back of the 1er, though they could ride comfortably. There is also much more leg room in the rear of the R versus the 135i.

Interior Styling: The R has the 135i beat in the interior looks department. The 135i needs to be updated and it probably will in a couple years when BMW replaces it with the rumored 2 Series. The seats are better in the R also. The 135i has power seats with driver memory though, which I will miss. Some of the interior bits of the R seem like they could wear prematurely. That didn't happen at all during the 3 years I had my 1er. The quality of the interior materials of the 1er were very good all around even though the styling might be a bit boring and dated.

Exterior Styling: I really like the look of the 1 series a lot. It's subjective though and a lot of people do not like the way it looks. I really like the look of the R as well. I had the M Sport package on my 1er and I love the wheels that it comes with. I think the styling of the 1er with the M Sport package and the R is even, in my opinion.

Price: The R is a $36k car (MSRP) fully optioned. My 135i was $48k (MSRP) pretty close to fully optioned. The 135i is an expensive car.

For the price, I think the R is an excellent value when compared to the 135i. I chose not to get another 135i because I wanted something a little different, I fell in love with the stock handling of the R compared to the 135i, the power of the R was close enough to the 135i, and the price will affect my wallet every month a whole lot less than the price of the 135i.

I think that's it.... pretty comprehensive. I'll edit the post if I think of anything else important in case my comparison helps or interests anyone.

^^ Well said. I previously owned a 2010 135i and I'm currently waiting on my Golf R. I really enjoyed the 135i for a while, but the car's interior is quite boring, and I felt it was very stripped down for the $42k the car cost. When I bought the 135i I was coming from a B8 A4 which in comparison was a pretty boring car to drive. Going from that the 135i felt like a rocket ship and I was easily distracted by that. I couldn't be more excited to get my R.

I guess posts can't be edited, so to add to my review:

After some spirited driving this morning, the 135i has more lateral grip than the R at high speeds.

Excellent review, above & beyond, thank you! Seems there's no clear winner, comes down to what's important to you. I'm pleased with my choice of the Golf R over the 135i, but wouldn't fault someone else for making the opposite choice. Different strokes. Thanks for a great comparison.

Finally picking up my RB 4-dr loaded on Saturday from Bill Britt in Fredericksburg. I've really enjoyed my Mk VI GTI, but this is gonna be a pretty sweet upgrade. My mods will be pretty conservative, owing to a supportive-yet-practical wife and a 6-month old boy who grows every day, but I plan to do the APR Stage 1, powdercoat the stocks wheels black, and tint pretty quickly. Probably a stealth box sub and amp in the near future, and we'll see how it goes from there. Will post pics.

Just stay AWAY from Antwerpen VW. (worst service department in the history of service departments) Ourisman VW in Laurel is good. They have some cool guys that work in the service department, and the asst mgr, Andrew, good dude. I think they're mod friendly too.. At least that's the impression I got from Andrew.
