The few reasons I decided against the R
1. Fsi motor
2. Didn't come here with the seats offered overseas
3. Couldn't justify the extra money for awd
4. I would like to own one, just not a 2012
As for a Mustang, I'm not into drag racing and could care less about 1/4 mile times.

The mustang is only car I regret not buying over my gti. Coming from a 08 Sti which is faster than the golf R I must say the 2wd gti version puts a bigger smile on my face than the Sti did. Awd takes all the 1st and second gear teenager antics out of the equation. Plus I think the look of the R is hideous. They got the gti design right for once (sans twin exhaust tips). The R just looks over weight. I am not sure where the next gen gtis are going to be built. You might look into that if you are going to wait and purchase a mkvii.

$34k for a mis-badged FSI?
Hell no.

Costs too much for me.
If it was obtainable I would rather spend $35,000 on a CPO TT or C-class.

you're getting more than AWD with the R.
not trying to convince anyone that the R is for everyone....but....
you cannot compare it to a base GTI. you need to compare it to an Autobahn GTI. then notice that the R comes with R specific bumpers, trim and wheels. a KO4 and not a KO3. climatronic and not climatic. and of course AWD. you're spending about 5k more than an loaded GTI for an R with these extra features. it's justified....just becuase you may not need this stuff doesn not mean it's not worth the cost.![]()

I used to own 2007 MKV GTi, and went through lot of problems with the FSI. It wasn't very reliable at all.
I did thought about getting the R because I do not want to go thru again with the FSI problems. I am very happy with my '10 MK6 GTI, it's been solid. it hasn't visited the shop in a while. The last time it went to the shop for ESP defective in December '09. Thats it. All of the problems on the FSI occurred right before 40,000 miles.
My GTI is Stage 2, and it still put a smile on my face every time I drive the car. I know it is faster than the R. Plus cheaper maintenance and cheaper to own than the R.
I would be all over if the R does come with TSI + K04. yea, i know it would be nice to have AWD but i really don't need it all.

I'm not buying a Golf R because I'd rather have my GTI and a custom $10,000 diamond encrusted, platinum plated 'Fast' figurine signed by Hitler, Ferdinand Porsche, and Bill Cosby.

1. Love my GTI and refuse to go upside down on an R since my GTI is still being paid on
2. I have spent quite a bit already on my GTI's performance enough so that I am confident I'd waste a stock R.
3. I love my DSG and the R doesn't come with one (Not a biggy as I like the manual too)
4. As others have said the prospect of the MKVII
5. The mark up that a lot of dealers are trying to put on the R over MSRP is stupid
6. I live in the south and AWD isn't really a big selling point especially since I don't track my car.
7. I'd rather spend 10k more and buy a BMW 1M
Just some of my many reasons. The R is a good car but not really worth the huge premium over a GTI IMHO. If you have the money then go for it I'd say. If my car were paid off and were mostly stock I'd be seriously considering an R but it's just not that much better for me to consider trading my GTI in on one.

Only $5k? If you can get an R for $35k OTD I applaud your haggling skills. Most people are reporting $38-$40 being asked by dealers. Climate control aside the trim pieces are great but it really should not cost more to produce an R bumper than a GTI bumper so their passing on a cost increase which they arent incuring? The real meat and potatoes differences are KO4 vs KO3, and AWD vs FWD, and better brakes. That is what you are paying the extra $5k-$10k for oh and a previous generation engine. If those items are worth it to you then the R is great. If you don't need some or any of them or have already upgraded your GTI to meet or exceed that then the R will likely not be worth it to you. The R will have better resale value too just like the R32 I'm sure. But since there is a new generation MK VII coming I'll hold out.

- No DSG
- Price
- Stage 2 GTI is just as satisfying
- AWD and FWD are the same in snow as long as you don't drive stupid
