Thanks, I did give it some thought before hitting the keyboard.

I had the paper work signed and every ready to roll. I was just waiting to take delivery. VWoA comes back and goes we need $7k down... On a lease!!! Yikes! I was putting $3k down, which I considered a butt raping.

Depends on the category, but STI, 135i, Mustang GT (Owned two including the '11 get an automatic though), A4 2.0T Quattro, TT, etc.

There are a bunch but that would basically be my shopping list.

Exactly why I AM driving a MKVI GTI instead of any of the cars above. For the $ you cannot beat a GTI.

That's a new one on me. What specifically bothers you about dual exhausts on 4-cylinder car? Is the fact that most (if not all) are just dual outlets from the muffler, rather than "real" dual exahusts?
Nothing that technical, it just seems unnecessary and out of place. Honestly it doesn't bother me as much on the R since its a limited production "halo" model, but it really seems out of place on the GTI. I'm just so used to the understated left exit exhaust on VWs that the new dual set-ups seem tacky to me. I just got a free TDI valence and I'll probably be changing mine whenever I can find a cheap catback. I know, I'm weird

I would perhaps consider a CPO R in 3 years...if the MkVII GTI doesn't best it, that is.

As it stands...I couldn't justify the massive price delta (about $9500) between the car I purchased and the R. The AWD and moderate performance hike didn't add up. Nor did the reversion to the FSI motor and the attendant issues it brings with it.

But in an apples to apples comparison, the difference between the MSRP of a GTI (autobahn w/all options) and the MSRP for a Golf R with sunroof/navi is what......approximatley $5K?

I am glad someone else sees this. When you take an autobahn GTI and then consider the differences between that and an R....the cost is more than justified.

I can't afford a toy for a daily driver, and at that price, there are a lot of nicer faster cars that I could buy.

      That and it's not cool

The few reasons I decided against the R
      1. Fsi motor
      2. Didn't come here with the seats offered overseas
      3. Couldn't justify the extra money for awd
      4. I would like to own one, just not a 2012
As for a Mustang, I'm not into drag racing and could care less about 1/4 mile times.

Not to make this a mustang thread, but take away both of those things and you still have a ridiculously fast car for pretty cheap (in comparison). Not to mention it probably handles and brakes better (if anyone hasn't realized this will be my next car).

The new Mustang can actually take a turn, unlike the previous gen's.

The mustang is only car I regret not buying over my gti. Coming from a 08 Sti which is faster than the golf R I must say the 2wd gti version puts a bigger smile on my face than the Sti did. Awd takes all the 1st and second gear teenager antics out of the equation. Plus I think the look of the R is hideous. They got the gti design right for once (sans twin exhaust tips). The R just looks over weight. I am not sure where the next gen gtis are going to be built. You might look into that if you are going to wait and purchase a mkvii.

      1. Already bought a GTI.
      2. No DSG.

+40 Hp for +15k? I can think of a lot of things I would rather do with my money. (I paid 20k for my GTI with 16k on the clock, loaded.)

I like the R, very cool car. I just think the GTI is a much better bang-for-the-buck and the 95% solution.
