Irwindale Speedway closing!!

So I herd that there closing Irwindale speedway no more 1/8 drag racing this really sucks, and no more formula D hopefully they can re open even though they already started taking down the grandstands!

They only took down the bleachers in the pit area. The current operator of the track filed bankruptcy. He was over 300k in the hole. The actual owner of the track wants to see the track rented out by a new operator and see it put to use. There is lots of speculation on what is to happen next. Lucas oils is considering it as well as some other investors. It looks like the plan for the property from the rumors I have heard is to tear down the oval, build a 1/4 mile track and build a dirt track. All I know is none of the permanent structures are going to be torn down as the owner of the property wants to see the track stay.

Sucks for the tracks operator! hopefully they can still keep it alive, but thats some good news!! hopefully they build a 1/4 mile that will be awsome and have test n' tune on thursday nights!

formula d got moved to california speedway... also there are other drag spots like qualcomm but those are out the way for some of us. me personally i have been meaning to go to adams motorsports park time attack tuesdays. just another idea for something to do with the closure.

The Pasadena Star News is reporting that more than 20 parties have contacted track property owner Nu Way Industries of Acadian, California about taking over the operation of the track. That’s the good news. The bad news is that none of that business can move forward until the bankruptcy filing, put in by the former operators of the track can be cleared up.

I just saw a post from the Bug-in people yesterday, and they said vw drag day in march has been postponed until further notice. the next drag day will be in april at fontana speedway.

Yep...it's all about money, and the old-school types of people who run the drag strips aren't creative enough to find new streams of revenue. It needs a young owner, not a 1950's gearhead.

OC Dragway = Closed (now Santa Ana/John Wayne Airport).
Lion's Den = Closed
LA County Raceway = Closed
Irwindale = Closed
Carlsbad Raceway = Closed (which had an elevation of 44 feet)

This leaves only Pomona for everyone north of SD county; and SD county only has an 1/8 mile @ Qualcomm with no 1/4 option unless they make the drive to Pomona. Pretty sad and ironic for the state that created and still defines "car culture".

There already is a lot of street racing making a comeback, and part of it could definitely be attributed to the more recent closures in the last decade (Carlsbad, LACR, and now Irwindale). That's several hundred kids and adults who COULD have been racing at a track, but might now make the decision to join the growing numbers of street racers.

Hopefully the VW world will shift back toward performance instead of hard-parking.

I'm to the point now where I support responsible midnight runs. With the technology we have available, it's easy to keep a group small and fly under the radar. Though, SoCal1320 has been down for maintenance so I haven't been keeping track.

They have 2 events this weekend, plus 93.1 JACK FM is advertising they will be there on Saturday stickering cars (first 200 cars stickered win swag).

Wow...and Qualcomm looks like it's going to close, too? I bet the local Revenue (Police) Departments are excited they'll be able to write more tickets.

Ever since LACR went under, things in the Palmdale area have gotten bad. Then Willow Springs started doing street legals on some Fridays, and it got a little better, but I haven't heard anything about Willow Springs running 1/4 drags recently.

i dotn understand this. There has been alot of successful events there lately. Youd think that would be a profitable situation. Rallycross, drifting, practices for various groups and tvs spots. Odd to see this going on. Poor management?
