I like the Cajun name better. I think the new one is pronounced Ma-chan.

So they'll have 2 sizes of sports car (911 and Boxster/Cayman) and 2 sizes of SUV (Cayenne and Macan). Does this mean there will eventually be 2 sizes of sedans (something smaller than the Panamera)?

There was no concept, just a confirmation that Porsche would be building a sub-Cayenne SUV two years from now, with the working name Ca(yenne)jun(ior).

Apparently Macan means Tiger in Indonesian, or is Gaelic for 'sonny'/'laddie'. I think they're going for the former, but the latter has some poetry to it being the smaller Porsche ute.

Stuttgart’s new sports car in the SUV segment has been given the name Macan. The name Macan is derived from the Indonesian word for tiger and combines suppleness, power, fascination and dynamics – core characteristics of the new off-road car.

“The Macan combines all sports car characteristics with the benefits of a SUV and is a genuine Porsche”, said Bernhard Maier, Member of the Executive Board Sales and Marketing of Porsche AG. “The name of a new Porsche has to fit with the brand, sound good in very many languages and dialects and evoke positive associations.”

As the fifth Porsche model line, the Macan is a central plank of Strategy 2018, by which the sports car manufacturer wishes to expand its model portfolio. Porsche intends the Macan to emulate the success of the Cayenne. The SUV will start coming off the production lines in Leipzig in 2013. To that end, the site in this city in Saxony is being expanded into a fully-fledged production plant including body assembly line and paint shop – with 500 million euro of investment one of the biggest building projects in Porsche’s corporate history. In the medium-term, the sports car manufacturer will be creating more than 1,000 new jobs here.
Word names at Porsche have a concrete connection with the corresponding model and its characteristics: the name Boxster describes the combination of boxer engine and roadster, Cayenne stands for sharpness, the Cayman is snappy and agile and a Panamera is more than a Gran Turismo, capable also of winning the Carrera Panamericana long-distance race.

I saw a newish 20122/2012 Cayenne yesterday, it looked absolutely awesome. One of the best looking SUVs on the road, it's the one that has led strips in the bumper. I remember when they just came out I thought they were hideous, but after years they evolved into a much better looking SUV.

If this thing looks similar it will look great.

I think Porsche has already announced their intention on making a 3-series sized sports sedan, so yes. I fully expect it to dominate the competition (in performance) when it does arrive.

Yep. This thing will be a hot seller. It will likely dethrone the Range Rover Evoque as the coolest of the smaller premium SUVs.

Using the latest in badge-engineering technology, I was able to create an exact replica of the new Macan.

Touareg is pretty nice 'badge engineered' Cayenne so I don't think were talking Tempo / Topaz type of comparison here.

The platform is available, the vehicle will be good, and people who need their Q5 to say Porsche on it will line up to buy it.

    Profit!

...and those profits mean that low volume sports cars are still built.

    Winner winner Macan dinner!

They are going to sell a billion of these. No kidding. This is bascially just a license to print money. Baby Porsche SUV? Done and done.

Some would argue that the Cayenne is a badge engineered Touareg since VW did most of the work and the Cayenne is produced in Slovakia at the VW plant.

Only the bodies are produced in Slovakia, the final product is assembled in Leipzig, Germany.

Porsche has hinted towards a sedan that would compete alongside BMW's 5 series.
