I happened upon an article that showed Soviet propaganda during the space race. As dubious as the purpose of propaganda is, they usually know how to make some nice posters. Post up some of your favorite state sponsored art.

I wish I knew what these said without the message getting "lost in translation" but this is one of my oldest faves.

fun article: Have YOU made a finger-pointing poster?

    http://www.artlebedev.com/mandership/154/
In 1914 London Opinion published an issue with lord Kitchener on the cover—the British Minister of War stared piercingly pointing his finger at the viewer.
    ...
explains all about the history of the fingerpointing poster. lots more in link

Awesome, thanks man! I'm surprised at what a lot of those say. The message is really quite humble and subdued. I guess the connotation that is associated with the Russian language makes you think they're going to be saying something a little more dictatorial. They're very much inline with the communal and society.

yeah, but if you think about it, propaganda works best when it's subtle.

I have entire books of war-time propganda. It's all good stuff. The best were probably the early 30's German stuff -- simply beautiful.

The most comical being the 90's-Today North Korean stuff (US soldiers who look like they're straight from the Korean war...impaling infants on bayonets while laughing etc...). They're wildly over the top.

I have two Discovery Channel cycling posters done in the Soviet style. I like 'em but they require a little explanation when guests wander into my home office.

Totally. The poster are out of Germany between WWI and WWII were amazing examples of graphic design. I am also a fan of a lot of the WPA posters too. As a visual person, the time of Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and Constructivism must have been pretty exciting.
