Is the pad light or a red light that just says "Brake". If the latter, that refers to your e-brake, not your brake pads.

Car is 2000 manual.
The brake light is on now since a while.
Pads inspection show 'good' (changed less than a year ago).
How does the pad wear indicator work?
Can I disable it by (depending on the circuit layout):
- short it (most likely, the sensor is looking for closed circuit that gets interrupted when the pad wears down)
- short to ground
- short to +12V
What else can cause the light to come on?
Will VAGcom or OBDII pick it up?
I checked the sensor connector front left. Sensor measured no resistance (open).
I shortened it at the connector, no change.
I ran VAGcom, no code. Erased all codes. Still on.
I read that the Beetle only has a sensor front left. Is there another one at the front right that could cause the light?

The light comes on when the pad wears down (pretty far) and breaks the wire embedded in the pad. Check to see if the connector came disconnected. ECS Tuning sells a "bypass" for the pad light that basically just bridges the connection and is completely reversable unlike splicing the wires together.

Interesting, mines on too...this won't throw any codes correct?
when I did erase all codes my light went off for a few seconds then came back on.

On my NB is the brake light, If the brake handle is up, no problem,
but once you disengage it, the brake light starts blinking and it won't stop until you pull the handle again.
