About every 3 months.
Saturday morning I replaced the video card in my HTPC from a failing ATI HD4350 to a GeForce 520 and replaced the power supply with a cooler master one. I was getting intermittent shut downs and the power supply has seemed to fix that. The PC itself is over 5 years old and had been doing HTPC duty for the last 3.

Just recently I sold off my Socket 1366 Xeon (W3540) and ponied up for:
Intel Core i7 3930K (Sandy Bridge-E, 6core 12MB L3)
Asus P9X79 PRO
16GB DDR3 2133 cas9
So I got all that tossed in there and sold my crossfire 6950 setup (dual 6950's that I made a hacked bios for to unlock them into 6970's![]()
) and used that money to buy a AMD Radeon HD 7970 3GB!
I also got myself a Corsair H80, and put the 3930K under there and she runs like a beaut at 4.8Ghz, folding 24/7. I was only expecting to get ~4.6Ghz, but I got a pretty good chip. It overclocks very well and only needs ~1.38v to do so.
I'll have to take some pics

Yesterday I installed OS X Lion... so far so good... getting used to the editing keys (home/end doesn't exist really) and jumping per word, etc is completely different...
Otherwise it's been a good experience so far... we'll see how long this lasts![]()

I be getting a new PCI graphics card today (3-29-12, supposed to deliver today.. wow 2 day free shipping is hard to believe on such cheap items).
It has a whopping 256MB DDR2 ram!
The GeForce MX 4000 that I salvaged from a junked PC is just not cutting it (has no hardware pixel shaders and uses old drivers).
I just happened to run across a re-certified Radeon X1550 for the price of a steak dinner and thought what the heck.
It supports 1080i through the s-video. So it could allow this old PC to be a media center for my 720p tv (this is my old Dimension 2400 with upgraded 1.25 MB DDR system ram and a 3.06 hyper threaded intel P4 chip)
I did check out the reviews and specs before buying- and it seems like the best PCI graphics card out there (for a reasonable sum).
The people that bought it for Windows 7 are idiots since it says clearly it does not have those drivers (and where all the negative reviews come from).
Anybody need a Geforce MX 4000 card? It does fine for work applications, and was a definite improvement over the old integrated intel graphics on this machine (will ship for shipping cost to somebody known here that can use it - might fit in that small priority mail box).

Well, the card does perform better.
Half-Life and NOLF play much smoother/faster at the highest level (Half-Life deep space background looks much better.. for some reason it looked extremely pixilated with the Jaton... like light brite style even though the rest was fine)
And even though it was described as 256 MB, it actually has 512 MB.
But full screen flash video is still slightly too choppy to watch, but still better than before (even with hardware acceleration turned on).
But it played full 1080p VLC videos fine... not sure if the Jaton did. Maybe it did. Actually, it must have since I was watching TGUK before my new PC.
The offer still stands on the JATON GeForce MX4000 128MB PCI card (give you for shipping cost).
If you are rocking a ten year old PC, this might help.. at least with video playback. (shrug)

Just for ****s and giggles. I do fold on it most of the time though. Also, I am a software developer and I do some dev work on there so it's nice to have the ability to run VM's to test things in, etc. Really, I am just EXTREMELY sensitive to computer speed and I HATE slow computers. I play games on it too, when I have time, lol. Lately been into Tribes: Ascend, and Anno 2070.
Why are you running a PCI video card? I have a bunch of faster video cards in my 'misc' pile. I could sell you one if you were interested, they are all PCI-E though. (ATI 4870 1GB, Geforce 8800GT 512MB, Geforce 7950 GT 256 or 512 not sure, a Geforce GTX 260 896 MB but I think I want to keep that card for folding...)
Just the other day I fixed that 8800 and 260, in my oven!
Also, I dont think there is such thing as a Geforce MX 4000, I bet it is a Geforce 4 MX 400.

I have an HD 5670 in my Inspiron 570 (Phenom II X4 820, 6 GB ram).
That PCI card was for my old "back up" Dimension 2400.
Fiddling with it is kind of fun (and low risk since I don't really need that PC), and I enjoy playing old games on it versus trying to get them working on my Windows 7 machine.

I like the 5670 since it is a lower power card (still rocking oem dell psu).
But I had a 9800 GT in there before- so it can handle a higher power draw card.
PM a price is you want (out of curiosity).
SOAR has some 4850s for sale in the FS thread (last time I checked).
But those are similar in performance to the HD 5670.
The 4870 is significantly better (but also pricey.. ).

Even a 4850 would be faster than a 5670. The 5770's are about midway between a 4850 and 4870.
The 5670 has 400 cores while the 4850 and 4870 have 800.
If you have a GDDR5 5670, then you have about as much memory bandwith as a 4850, but with a little more than half the shader power (half the cores but slightly higher clockspeed).
If you have a DDR3 5670 then it's way slower than even a 4850.
Looks like 4870's go for $40-50 on ebay, at that price I think I'd probably like to keep it actually, heh. It's still handy as a spare for LAN game nights when someone may have a slower card in their system.

The PASSMARK gpu benchmark list has the HD 5670 and HD 4850 very close.
I never really looked at the specs that closely.
At the time, I just needed a low priced card to replace the 9800 GT.
And this was a very good open box deal (like 60 delivered, but does just have ddr3 memory fwiw).
You really think the HD 4850 is significantly better than the ddr3 HD 5670?
Hmm.
fwiw- it plays Metro 2033 better than the 9800 GT did. (Shrug)
...and if I do a major GPU upgrade, I need to upgrade the PSU.. so that gets expensive.
I may just keep this Dell as is and build a gaming PC in the near future (since I have never built one and an unlocked bios will allow overclocking).

I'm pretty sure the HD 4000 series were dx10 while the HD5000 series were dx11. Metro2033 works better with dx11 cards, from what I've read.
#60
My ddr3 5670 doesn't have the horsepower to run dx11 (on Metro).
It can do it, but you end up with 10 fps game play.
I've never been a serious pc gamer, so I am FULLY content playing games with reduced graphical settings to enjoy a good FPS rate (why I am still happy with the HD 5670).
But I will start keeping an eye out for a sick GPU deal.
Sometimes newegg throws some amazing deals out there for short periods of time.

I've got a 5670 1GB. It was supposed to be GDDR3 but CPU-Z shows GDDR5.
It works for FSX, but I could use a little more oomph. I hardly use that computer.
I've got a couple 480's in my gaming rig. Vroom vroom party starter.

As I said before- at the time I just needed something last year that was low priced to replace my fried 9800 GT.
And it seems fine (better performance than the 9800 GT, it seems).
I never really looked at the core clock and pixil shaders thing before... the passmark rating must be artificially high for some reason.
Several people here running dual SLI/Crossfire X GPUs.I've got a couple 480's in my gaming rig. Vroom vroom party starter.
Wow, I thought that was buggy and unreliable (and varied greatly by game)?![]()

Linux sure has come a long way!

Not today but early last week I got my warranty replacement for my 5850 to a new 6870. Graned both cards are dated by today's standards it's still good to me. So
(second one from left)
to a new
Again with lifetime warranty so I'm a happy camper.

All I did to mine today was order it a 27" 2560x1440 monitor.

I used to run CF X1950Pro's, then CF 4850's, then CF 6950's (modded to 6970's), but now I am on a single 7970, eventually I'll grab another. That's how all my CF setups have worked, use the one card at first, then get the second later.
It's not really that buggy, although for some (mostly older) games it doesnt work and you only use one card, but usually those games will be fine on a single card anyways.
The 5850 to 6870 swap is pretty much straight across, I can't remember the specs off hand but those are pretty decent cards.
Is it one of those Korean ones?

Upgraded the desktop to an SSD, Intel 520 Series. The laptop has taken over as my primary workstation so I'm gonna use the desktop just for gaming now. Can't wait for Diablo 3!!
