I wonder, if they infiltrate/hack companies to steal designs? Do they just get an F-150, take it apart, scan it, and mass produce? Or do they just eye-ball it?

I would imagine they reverse engineer it, if you want to call it engineering.

I'd rock those badges if I had a Ford.

With those numbers I hope it gets at least 45mpg to make the truck at least useful for something

About 10 years ago they compared a cloned ford tractor to the original, and found mounting holes were copied for things that never made it to production on the original or clone.

I remember reading an article in the early 2000s about Ford Explorers in China... something about the knockoffs being more plentiful than the real deal and the parts being mostly interchangeable. I think it was in Forbes or something anyone else read that article

Silly china trying to steal from people. these really are copy's. looks just the same as the original.
If you were to copy something you shouldn't make it so obvious. cool thread though any more of these?

Had a supplier from a 3rd world country (not China but could easily have been) tell me that they could send the part in question to be sectioned & scanned digitally -- they would then supply the cloned part at a lower price. Not something that was acceptable obviously. The guy showed no embarrassment about the whole thing.

That engine should do fine as a work vehicle.

You think it's going to last? At the rate they're going through resources and how much toxic crap they're pumping into their land and water, they'll be screwed one way or another. It's not like they know how to innovate any longer like the ancient Chinese, all they can do now is copy it seems, so when that's no longer possible... You get the idea.

Either that or their economy is going to f*ck itself in the ass one day in the not too distant future.

These are all very small companies with no significant presence in the market.

BTW, i think the Landwind wasn't a copy but bought technology as it was sold in Europe.
I don't think GM would have stood for that if it was a clone.

They show no emotions in the first place anyway. That makes them really difficult to read. Makes you realize how important different tones of voice are in getting your message thru.

Since there are Chinese partners w every foreign company, just maybe its some kind of deal where they can produce rebadged vehicles, just cheaper.

I think American should free proud that China finally steal American design. (previous they only steal Japanese and European designs)

I don't care about these clones (so should you guys) because these clones only sell in China. So they fool nobody, only themselves. But it is one of a (strange) way to gauge which cars are hot/popular. (or worthy to getting clone)

This point needs to be emphasized. Of the larger Chinese manufacturers today, only BYD still engages in total copying.

The Chinese government is gradually forcing the consolidation of these smaller companies. As the larger companies produce more competitive cars with each generation, there will come a time in the near-future when copies like this will no longer attract buyers. Then this will be just another chapter of automotive history.

  26. 02-19-2012 01:20 PM #26
Wow. I had no idea this was happening. for awareness.

Is there really no legal concern to these manufacturers who are having their designs ripped off? Or does the U.S. just let it slide because they owe China so much money?

What's wrong with Chinese designers? They have an emerging market with way less restrictions then any other country and all they can come up with is bland crap and blatant copies? When we were in that position we came up with:

Since the Chinese Government won't uphold Patent rights maybe FoMoCo should stop outsourcing all its parts from overseas.

Car makers have tried to sue but in Chinese court they are thrown out. Copyright infringement laws are much more loose over there.
