Thread: Radio on:off after turning off car

  1. 02-19-2012 04:08 PM #1
Is there any way to change the behavior of the radio when turning off the car? In MKV and previous, the radio stayed on after the car was turned off, until the car door opened. Now (in the MKVI) it turns off as soon as the ignition is killed and you have to turn it back on. Any way to change this?

I have the low-end radio in a Golf MKVI 2.5l, and the following is the Radio portion of my most recent scan.

This radio continues to play, after 'engine off', until removing the key.

I have the same issue. 2012 Golf TDI, NON-KESSY (uses a real key) with Premium 8 RCD-510. Once you turn the key from run to ACC the radio shuts off. Really would like to change this behavior to at least keep the radio on while the key is in ACC so I don't have to idle until the end of a song I really like. I know you can turn the radio back on, but it is just annoying to do it in the middle of a song. I have a VCDS, but I am not at home right now. I will post an auto-scan as soon as I am able to. I am not sure if my wife's 2011 Jetta S with the RCD-310 acts like this too, but my 2011 JSW S with the RCD-310 did. Must be a Mk6-ism.

    Quite simple from day ONE.
Turn the car off, open the door, remove the Key from the Ignition, then turn the Radio/CD Player on.

... and my MKV has never, ever, had the Radio/CD Player stay on when the key was turned off, and removed from the car.

You make it sound so simple Tim B. Thanks for solving all of our problems. I, and the others interested in this thread, just want the radio to stay on when turning the key from Run to ACC. Isn't that the point of the ACC position (or does VW call it something else)? I know it is possible to listen to the radio with the key off, but I don't want the interruption, and subsequent volume reset that happens when you turn the engine off then press the power button to turn the radio back on.

Here is a scenario. You are driving and listening to your favorite sport team play a big game. It is 2 minutes from the end of the game and they are down by one and in position to score. You pull into the parking lot at the grocery store but you want to hear the end of the game because it is a nail biter and you are on the edge of your seat. Do you let the car idle for two minutes (more likely 5-10 or more minutes with time outs and fouls depending on the sport), or do you turn the key back one click and kill the engine, but lose power to the radio, and have your team score the winning point(s) during that split second it takes to get the radio powered back up? Wouldn't it be easier and more economical, to be able to just kill the engine yet let the radio keep playing without interruption? My new VWs are the only cars I have ever owned that I can think of to kill the radio immediately after you turn the key back one click.

Jack, haven't seen you post since I posted the rest of my Scan and Tim S posted his. Do you have any input, or do you just troll around being the Auto-Scan Schutzstaffel.

Over 400 views and no answers yet? Apparently there is an interest in this topic.

I know Dana used to hint that changing the country code would affect the radio's behavior after it was turned off. But we never got any particulars.

I have been hunting for the solution for over two years.

I have a '10 Tiguan with RNS-510 and the only "solution" to make it work is to change the country code to Europe or England under Instrument-17.

However, AFAIK, this may only works for cars like Jetta and Golf. Models like Passat and Tiguan, will generate whole bunch of error codes like air bags, ABS ,etc, forcing me to changed it back and suffered for it until now.

What's ridiculous, is that my 2008 Touareg with push to start had no problem. it would do this and the radio would stay on until the door opened. same with 2007 jetta and 2003 passat. i dont understand why this would be eliminated. it sucks.

What else does changing the country code affect? Will this make things metric as well?

I realized another annoying thing about this issue today. If you are using bluetooth to listen to a media player, you lose your connection and have to turn the key back to run and reconnect before you can continue listening to your music. Haven't tried this with a phone call yet, but that would be really annoying too.

It will stay on if you're in a call. It turns off if it's just music. Obnoxious and inconsistent.

UK setting will make units imperial.

Don't forget to update us the result. This hidden "feature" is on top of my wish list.

My 08' GTI, and owned VW's dated back to 94' have no problem too. The thing is, it is a North America issue only. As I mentioned before, change the country setting can solve the problem.

My Instruments (17) have been coded to RoW since I got my VCDS in November. Zero change in behavior. Radio turns off when ignition is switched off. When it's turned back on (while ignition is off) I can only get 30 minutes of radio before it turns itself off again.

This is why I posted my full scan. I've heard that changing the country code is *supposed* to fix the issue. But, with my car, it doesn't.

FWIW: My long coding for Instruments is: 17-0D-01
    17= 07 (VW Golf/Jetta (52/5K/AJ)) + 10 (Country: Rest of World (RoW))

The vehicles reported so far act in a manner compliant with my MKV Jetta TDI.
Why would you imply that the original post was the "Gospel" on this issue?

You turn off the key and the radio shuts down.
If there is some "MAGIC" to be had, then it will be posted.

P.S. when I turn the Radio back on (no key in the Ignition) I get 60 minutes of play, which is too much time when the Tiger's Ball Game is on.

Did you mean to "say" MKIV and earlier?

Well they must change that down the road... Bad move VW!

Just try to clarify. The problem describe in this post is that turning the key off from engine running position (without removing the key) will keep the radio on UNTIL you remove your key. This behavior has not been change since MK III. Some how in the 09-10, they start to behave differently which make existing VW driver nuts - turning off engine (with key still in) will shut off the radio.

I don't think you have that quite right.

No, that is not the problem. No one has described this as a problem in this thread.
