Well thought I would finally post after a week of ownership which has been nothing but fun, waited way to long to get into a mk1
picked this up last week semi locally
1981 Caddy Lx
268k
1.6D
5 speed
Has some body rust, but nothing too bad, frame and towers are solid. PO said the motor was rebuilt a few years back, oil changed every 5k, mechanically it seems to be in very good condition. Tonight I plan on doing and trans fluid and oil change just so I know it was done. Also need to clean the bay and see where i am getting an oil leak from. It seems like the head gasket but I am not sure.

Forgot to add the plans
-new carpet...one now is worn through and add some sound deadening
-some kind of speakers....cant get the ones in there working well but could be the radio wiring, also is there susposed to be a center one in the dash? there are some random cut wires which i need to figure out which they are as well
-fix the coolant gauge which isnt working/seems to have no wires running to the sensor
-some new seats..current ones are colapsed and worn down
-axle flip
-coils w/ raised mounts
-new exhaust...po installed a dual exhaust
-possibly add a turbo, my friend has a setup for sale, but just not sure if i wanna spend the money on it right now
-fix the tail gate, on side the lower mount snapped off
any tips to wash the bay? ive always been nervous of ruining something with the water

yeah i dont ever plan to sell this one, been looking on and off long enough now, there are a few things i need looked at when you have some time, i moved a few blocks away but still very close
i was talking to matt about it, seems like the vacum pump was maybe changed and theres a line comming from the block that is not hooked up along with the radom dash wires and things like that

umm..hmm you have two temp senders
a temp switch
and a second temp sender (forget what the one with two prongs is)
the one with a single spade is a switch
the ones with circular pegs are temp senders (they go to gauge)
you will need to check your manual wiring schematic to see which wires hook to which switch/sender
but meh, they dont really control anything on your car except gauge, dummy light, and that two prong one i forget what it does
i dont own a diesel so not sure why you have so much temp related connections

Good luck with the new caddy man. I am very jealous of the bed rails. Keep us updated.

thanks to matt(saddest) and mattrad i got the old drain line for the vac pump capped and got some newer seats for the truck, still need to clean the centers but they are in and better than the stock caddy seats
flag mirror was added to the drivers side, have new h4 headlights on the way as well, got the vapor barrier replaced in the drivers door, was going to swap to my "other" doors that came with the truck but the one hinge has a bolt snapped off in it so untill i can free that ill be keeping the doors with holes on it
is there a trick to getting the gauge cluster out? just trying to trace some cut wires in the dash and clean up some things
found some rot in the floor however when installing the seats which i am going to work on this weekend or tonight if i can get my outlet changed for my welder, then start to figure out what i am going to do with the rocker rust
also tried this wheel today...i like it but it blocks the spedo view, also want to figure out a way to lower the seats slightly

A wooden Nardi wheel would look sweet with the dash.
#22

Yeah they aren't as easy to find now.
#25
I can find them easy, just not in the budget for the truck yet
Was using this for extra storage, but people are work were trying to steal it...gotta figure out a good way to secure it

Padlock Didn't work?
#28
If it weren't an antique I would agree![]()
#29
It is my "crappy" one tho, perfect one sits in the den
But it is usable and works very well so no holes, I'll figure out something for it this weekend if I have time, swapped outlets for my welder so I should be able to make some rust repairs happen soon
