Sporting bow ties?

I am known for my tie collection but was thinking about trying something new. I have a dinner rehearsal and thought a bow tie with a blazer. Thoughts? This is an oddly difficult decision.

People notice. There is a guy here at the office that wears them. We were gonna have a bow tie day, but without him.

I've seen one guy recently on the street that was wearing one out and about, and he looked kinda cool. But he had good facial asthetics (no homo). So if you have those, you can almost wear anything.

Honestly, I think bowties can be sharp if your overall look is kind of indie or GQ-ish. (Sorry for the lame descriptions but I think you know what I mean.)

Also, avoid it if you're heavy or beer-bellied. These guys need all the horizontal lines they can get.

Avoid black and red. That's for prom dates and waiters.

Post up a pic if you get a chance! I am really curious -- cheering for you that you'll pull this off.

I am a huge fan of bowties. I do not own any yet, but I need to get a new suit and I want to get a bow tie for it. Not sure I can pull it off but like mentioned, who really cares what other people think.

Why?

About a third of my ties are bow. They hold in a lot less heat and you are less likely to spill any food on them unless you a trying to.

Be sure that your hands are very clean before tying a tie like you have in the picture above. White on a tie soils quickly.

Katie-S, I absolutely could not disagree more with your opinion quoted above. People need to remember that if a person is overweight, it doesn't mean they have to focus on buying clothing with the specific goal to make them look thinner.

People (fit AND overweight) should just buy clothes that are tailored properly to their specific body shape, and clothes that they're confident wearing.

deathbyart, since I don't know you, I have no idea what your physical build is. If you happen to be a larger gent, you can most definitely pull off a bow tie if you pair it with an appropriate outfit; and more importantly, if you can confidently wear that outfit.

Indeed. If Katie sees some fat hairy bastard in a bow tie and thinks it doesn't work because he doesn't suit her, it may not be the tie that is the problem. Though, a picture of a 14 year old with an hormonal problem wearing someone else's jacket might not be compelling evidence of the contrary.

By the time most guys are at the point in their lives that they feel comfortable in a bowtie, lots of them will have a couple extra pounds. I think very thin guys in bowties can look a bit Nation of Islam.

I also have one I wear when I go out somewhere nice with the wife. I have a VERY thick neck for my frame (17.5" and I'm 5'10"/190lbs) and I have a hard time finding ties that fit. Any ideas?

The wedding weekend was a blast and the bow tie was a "smash hit".
You can't tell in the pic but the shirt has grey stripes. Once I gather pics from the night, I may post a better one.

I would think most adjustable bow ties should have no trouble fitting around 17.5"- the one I just grabbed to check extends out to for a 46cm neck.

For where to find them, if you get up to NYC there are a few good consignment shops on 7th street that are worth taking a look at, Tokyo 7 is one of my favorites. It is hit or miss if you'll find something good there but I've picked up a few nice vintage hermes ties and bow ties very cheap. Paul Stuart will have a very good selection of bow ties as well.
