FYI to all those planning on getting sidemarkers... ecstuning.com has sidemarkers instock for Golf R. Smoked and Clear. About to order a pair of Clears myself. Also does anyone know if i can get LED's for my sidemarker bulbs ? Im wanting to find some blue tint so i can cover my Front LED's and Sidemarkers so they will give a nice blue color when shining !
I put them on last night. The quality was fine (no scratches, no imperfections) but the fit is not great. The color is better than the straight yellow but if I had to do it over again I'd wait until someone offers a better fitting version, and I'd go clear or color-matched.

No offense, but those look really bad. The color is tinged, and the fit is totally off. I'm trying to send my unopened set back to ECS, but they still haven't replied to my customer service inquiry. I ordered a set from OEM Plus, since I've heard better things about their product. If those suck too, I'm just going to run them until I can get the OEM orange markers color matched.
Why did VW even put these ugly markers on our cars? Ugh.
BTW, does anybody have a picture of the smoked sidemarkers with the lights on? Thanks.
Has anyone got a response for ECS on this? Their customer service seems to be crap. If I don't hear back from them with by Friday. I'll just have Amex do a chargeback and they can pay the fine that Amex will charge them.
I'm sick of crappy businesses that don't want to earn their freaking money and sell crap products.
I was going to order a lot more stuff with the side markers but something told me to see what the experience with the side markers is like. Getting hung up on when I call and no reply to emails...I'm surprised they've been in business as long as they have. Time to complain to the BBB too.
I ordered a set of tinted sidemarkers for my Golf from ECS, and the fit was so bad that they didn't even hardly stay in. If I pushed on the side they would pop out. They lasted about 1 minute before I took them out, threw them in the trash, cursed aftermarket parts, and again remembered why I decided to go with painted OEM sidemarkers. Wasn't even worth the hassle to me to return them, lesson learned...
:banghead: I just received my smoked oem sidemarkers from ecs. They are crap! Arrived all scratched up and had a slight chip in the one. Calling ecs today to get my money back. Either going to keep them the way they are or getting some from you know who....
Start by holding the can about 8"-12" away. Start spraying away from the marker and spray across the entire marker and move off the other edge before stop spraying. I.E. start and stop the spray not directly on the marker. Use slow even movements across the entire marker at the same distance. Do at least 2 or 3 coats. Probably 4 or 5. Let dry THOROUGHLY before applying another coat. Also a couple of coats of clear coat is a MUST.
Will it look professional? Maybe...its all about even coats, good ventilation and no dust.
Probably...I had always thought that is something you do on (for lack of a better word) raw plastic. I don't know if the existing markers have been treated or not.
It's all about getting the oil out of the plastic so the paint sticks to it. On a small piece like the marker you might not have to do it. Someone who knows for sure should probably chime in.
My suggestion was only a brief how to...I should have probably kept my minimal painting skills to myself...:banghead:
I bought and installed both the ECS and OEMplus side markers. They both suck and have fit issues, but the OEMplus side markers suck less. I am running them now. The side marker on the left fits better than the one on the right, but they both have a little lip on the bottom front and a well on the upper rear. That said, they still look way better than the orange reflectors. However, I'm considering just tinting (laminex?) the orange reflectors and re-installing them since it's becoming clear there are no aftermarket producers who make side markers that fit properly.
The ECS product is complete junk. They have a little "L" and "R" molded on the surface (to indicate left and right), and the fit is just horrible. Before I bought the set, ECS said they had seen no fit issues with their product. That must be a lie since the improper fit is easily noticeable and many people have experienced the same problem. Such a shame ECS is willing to sell that product to customers.
I sent him a PM. AP Tuning is telling me that they have replacements in route for the folks that are experiencing fitment issues. I've asked about lead time but haven't gotten a reponse as of yet. Hopefully they'll take care of the issue but it's good to have a backup plan.
I installed the clear OEMPlus markers and Invisibulbs. The markers look a little more like smoked in the pics as the shots were taken close to dusk. But they are clear.
I like the Invisibulbs as they are a silver color when off so they are not as obvious as the yellow when paired with the clear markers.
Note that the OEMPlus markers are flush but they are about 1mm smaller all around compared to the stock markers. So they have just a little bit of a gap compared to the stock ones.
Ok, so there are a lot of people who hate the sidemarkers. Seems about half of those people are getting the markers painted. Has anyone tried to source a Euro bumper cover to just eliminate the markers?
Axl Rose did my sidemarkers, smoked. No orange left at all when not lit, quality of work is outstanding. Darker than I thought against the CSG but I like it. Using factory white bulb and they do shine orange when lit which is an added bonus (don't need to use orange bulbs).
The MKV GTI Sidemarkers fit the MKVI R. I have clear ones on mine and the fit is perfect. My dealer tried this when the MKVI R Markers that they originally ordered did not fit properly (ECS). He had some MKV ones on hand and noticed that they were slightly larger. They popped them in and they fit.
