Thread: TPMS ?

  1. 02-25-2012 02:32 PM #1
I just leased a '12 TDi Golf. I've owned tons of MKII's a few MKIII's and a MKIV TDi Jetta ( the ONE car I regretted selling!) so this is my first brand new VW, the lease seemed like a decent way of having a nice ride but it could be easy to get out of in 3 years if I fall out of love with it.

One of the few things I don't like are the 17" wheels. The car handles well with the wide tires and short sidewalls but I can't help to wonder how many MPG's I'm loosing with those wide tires, plus the un-godly expense of replacing them down the road, which leads me to my question-

if I get some 16" wheels/tires from a MKV or VI Jetta/Golf, I'd assume that those cars didn't have a TPMS so would the TPMS transponder transfer from the 17" wheels into the 16" wheels or is there another way of doing this?

    Thanks for any replies!

2011 and up, the tpms is controlled thru ABS.. no more transponders in the wheels

Not all MkVI, mine has the TMPS in the valve stems. Easiest was to check is to look at the valve stem and see if they are rubber or metal.

This actually kind of sucks. The touareg2 TPMS was amazing and would tell you the individual wheel's tire pressure. The newfangled TPMS just tells you if one of the wheels is rolling slow than the other (i.e., low pressure) through the ABS system and you have no idea if it's an error, if it's low, or which wheel it is. sadface.

but to answer your question, changing wheel size won't matter, because you can press the reset button to recalibrate the sensor to "normal"
