Wow what a looker! Love the glass roof thing. Would like to see some fog lights though.

The interior... I don't know, I'd have to see it in person. Something doesn't look right in there.

it should be a solid car, just like any other volvo

looks like alot of the manufacturers are making a sedan/hatch design (looks like 1/2 hatch really)

those designs are hit and miss, just like the accord crosstour, and bmw 5 series GT (those were hideous)

Absolutely gorgeous. I don't normally like busy designs but this just works.

Wait, so they can the C30, S40, and V50, and replace all three with nothing? I'm sorry, that makes no sense at all. Why would they cede the sub-$30,000 price range to Audi, BMW, Mercedes etc. if they are at all serious about the US market? I'm more inclined to believe Autocar's sources on this.

Because all those cars were a flop, Volvo was losing money importing them, and being as they're a small niche manufacturer with a small niche marketing budget, they're focusing on the three models that make up 80% of the volume of the brand here--the S60, XC60 and XC90. Besides, compact luxury hatchbacks are still a niche market, and not a big enough segment in the US to warrant importation even if Volvo was doing better than it is.

Honestly, if the S60 and XC60 weren't the successes that they are, I'd have expected Volvo to pull out of the US entirely.

The green house looks very similar to the ford focus. Does this car share its platform again?

focus, mazda 3, v40, and, IIRC, c30 have been sharing the same platform for years.

Those triplets were incredibly unsuccessful and unprofitable, weren't terribly competitive, and from what I've heard actually cost Volvo money rather than making it.

Volvo isn't serious about the US market, in any case. They're limping along.

Nevertheless, we have more news coming our way thanks to our Greek friends over at Auto2day-gr, as they sent us the skinny on all those details about the V40 we were missing. And yes, we can confirm that the data is official.

We'll start with the V40's dimensions as in one of our previous posts featuring some scans from the Swedish edition of Auto Motor und Sport magazine, we wrongly assumed that the V40 measured 450cm (177-in.) long.

As it turns out, the publication was referring to the maximum length of the series, which it said would eventually include the S40 sedan, C40 three-door hatchback and XC40 SUV, and not specifically the V40.

The V40 measures 4,369mm (172.0 -in.) long, 2,041mm (80.3-in.) wide including the mirrors and 1,445mm (56.9-in.) tall, while it rides on a 2,647mm (104.2-in.) wheelbase. That makes it roughly the same size as its BMW rival, the new generation of the 1-Series.

Moving on to the engine range, at launch, buyers will be able to choose from a total of six powerplants.

The petrol range comprises of these three units:

      -The 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder "T3" producing 150PS (148bhp) at 5,700 rpm and 240Nm (177 lb-ft) of peak torque between 1,600 rpm and 4,000rppm.

It will be offered only with a 6-speed manual gearbox accelerating the V40 from 0-100km/h (62mph) in 8.8 seconds and on to a top speed of 210km/h (131mph), while returning a combined fuel consumption of 5.8lt/100km (40.6mpg US) with CO2 emissions of 134g/km.

      - The 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder "T4" is rated at 180PS (178bhp) at 5,700rpm and 240Nm (177 lb-ft) of peak torque from 1,600 rpm to 5,000rpm.

There's a choice of two 6-speed transmissions, a manual and an automatic. The stick shift takes the V40 from zero to 100km/h (62mph) in 7.7 seconds en route to a top speed of 225km/h (140mph) and returns an average fuel economy of 5.9lt/100km (39.9mpg US) with CO2 emissions of 138g/km.

      - Volvo's 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-five "T5" makes its appearance on the flagship V40 where it delivers 254PS (251bhp) at 5,400 rpm and 360Nm (266 lb-ft) of peak torque from 1,800 rpm to 5,400rppm.

The T5 is available exclusively with a 6-speed automatic that allows for a zero to 100km/h (62mph) sprint time of 6.5 seconds and a maximum speed of 250km/h (155mph), while consuming 7.9lt/100km (29.8mpg US) on average with CO2 emissions of 185g/km.

The diesel lineup also consists of three units:

      - The 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder "D2" churns out 115PS (113bhp) at 3,600rpm and 270Nm (199 lb-ft) of peak torque from 1,750 rpm to 2,500rpm and is linked exclusively to a 6sp manual gearbox.

With this engine, the V40 goes from zero to 100km/h (62mph) in 12.3 seconds and reaches a top speed of 190km/h (118mph). It returns an average fuel consumption of 3.6lt/100km (65.3mpg US) on the EU cycle with CO2 emissions of 94g/km.

      - The 2.0-liter turbocharged five-cylinder "D3" is good for 150PS (148bhp) at 3,500rpm and 350Nm (258 lb-ft) of peak torque from 1,750 rpm to 2,750rpm.

Once again, there's a choice of two 6-speed transmissions, manual or automatic. With the manual gearbox, the V40 D3 goes from zero to 100km/h (62mph) in 9.6 seconds and tops out at 210km/h (131mph), while delivering a combined fuel consumption of 4.4lt/100km (53.5mpg US) on the EU cycle with CO2 emissions of 117g/km.

      - The 2.0-liter turbocharged five-cylinder "D4" develops 177PS (175bhp) at 3,500rpm and 400Nm (295 lb-ft) of peak torque from 1,750 rpm to 2,750rpm.

Transmission choices include a 6sp manual and an automatic with the same number of gears. When equipped with a stick shift, the V40 D4 reaches 100km/h (62mph) in 6.6 seconds and maxes out at 215km/h (134mph). Volvo says it averages 4.4lt/100km (53.5mpg US) on the EU cycle with CO2 emissions of 117g/km (same as the D3).

We're also told that all six petrol and diesel engines will be fitted as standard with a Start and Stop system as well as a regenerative braking system, regardless of the type of transmission.

I too am surprised that in light of other not-quite luxury but premium brands' decisions to attack this market that Volvo is deciding to pull out completely. Both generations of S40s sold in decent numbers in the first 4 years they were introduced - averaging about 20,000 units a year. I don't know how people consider that a failure for a car company that struggles to sell 6,000 units a month nowadays. The problem with the S40 was like the problem with all other Volvos recently - it soldiered on way too long without substantial updates only for another Volvo model to debut and overlap it, effectively killing it off. Given China's preference for sedans, and Acura and Buick entering this market in the US, I'd guess a sedan version has to be at least on the drawing board.

I don't know how they can be so enthusiastic about throwing good money after bad by trying to make a go of it with such an incomplete lineup, but I guess we'll learn whether they're serious or not in Geneva.

If the V40 will arrive on our shores, only these powertrains will make it:

wow I'll bet that T5 engine is a hoot in this car. Totally stupid that it is auto-only.

I think Volvo may just have outdone the new A3.

Not bad, but I am sick and tired of all these "designers" applying the 1/3-2/3 rule proportions to the back part of the car (proportions of window and below window areas). It's a rule of thumb and it doesn't always work. I find it oooogly.

      An informative report from Autocar:

      http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsAr...llCars/261510/

      Quote Originally Posted by Autocar
Volvo will unveil a new-look Volvo V40 five-door hatchback at next week’s Geneva show designed to revive its fortunes in the premium hatchback class, and steal volume from the dominant BMW 1-series and Audi A3. The outgoing S40 and V50 models die to make way for new V40 production tipped to reach 90,000 units a year at Volvo’s Ghent plant in Belgium.

The car, which combines the virtues of the outgoing S40 and V50 models in one body style, hits the European market late in May, and the UK in August. It comes with six engine options (three petrol and three diesel) spearheaded by a 254 bhp version of Volvo’s own turbo five-cylinder, tipped to deliver a 150 mph top speed and 0-60 mph in 6.5 seconds. Ultimately Volvo will adopt a four cylinders-only strategy and provide high performance versions “by electrification”.

The petrol range has two additional four-pot turbo 1.6s from Ford and rated at 150 bhp and 180 bhp. The diesel range includes 177 bhp and 150 bhp 2.0 litre turbo fives, plus a super-frugal 1.6 litre 115 bhp turbo four emitting just 94 grams/litre CO2. All cars have stop-start systems, brake energy regeneration and Volvo’s improved City Safety anti-collision system that now works at up to 50 km/h (30 mph).

However, the biggest safety development is an all-new pedestrian airbag, that pops the car’s bonnet on impact and provides a large cushion at the base of the screen onto which a pedestrian can fall, yet which is U-shaped to allow the driver visibility to keep steering.

Designed while Ford still owned Volvo, the new V40 has been embraced Geely-appointed CEO Stefan Jacoby. The car will spearhead an aggressive new “Designed Around You” marketing campaign to “revive Volvo’s rightful place in the world”. The new V40 uses Ford Focus platform, though Volvo insists that it has re-rated the electric power steering and revised every spring and damper setting. The car is about four centimetres shorter than the outgoing model, but lower and wider. Kerb weight is still being calculated, engineers say, but it “should be lower”.

It also gets a plush, simple interior meant to embody Scandinavian values. It has mood lighting and even a gently illuminated gear lever knob. The digital dash is interactive.

UK prices are expected to start from just over £19k for a 1.6-litre D2 in entry-level ES specification, which will include the enhanced City Safety system, Pedestrian airbag and Bluetooth system.

Mindful of an urgent need to sell more cars than the current company-wide 450,000, these prices reinforce Volvo’s view that big rises will be avoided.

      That's a nice ride...

      Hope it does well.

Hopefully the S60 gets some of the design treatment on this car. I really think they have found their groove with the design.

I certainly hope so. We've sold heaps of P1's at our dealership, & I would expect it to do quite well around here.
