Thread: RNS-510 questions about mp3s

  1. 02-26-2012 12:55 PM #1
    1. is there any advantage to copying my mp3s from my SD card to the internal HDD? seek times? better organized? anything?

    2. i hate, Hate, HATE how it organizes the tracks in ABC order, NOT correct track order!!! is there a way to correct this, other than painstakingly renaming all my tracks to include a 01, 02, 03, etc. in front of the name??? my pc knows the track order, my mp3 player knows the track order, but NOPE! not the rns-510! please tell me there's a fix for this?

i have the folders organized as follows: ARTIST(s)>ALBUM(s)>TRACK(s)

why can't they understand i want them in the proper playing order on the album??? i'm not a 99-cent i-tunes idiot... i don't buy tracks, i buy CDs.

I don't use an SD card, so I'm not sure of the features. But as a computer geek, I believe that it just reads the SD card like computer would. The only way to get around that, is if the system can read and index the files. If it's just playing them as files with no indexing there isn't nothing you can do but to rename them.

Ha ha....you mean with that "slow" hard drive .....isn't it much slower than the SD card? (wasn't someone dissing the HD as being too slow to you somewhere on here....is it?)

Are your ID3 tags up to date with the track number for each MP3 file?

yeah the track number is part of the info for the tracks, my pc understands the track order just fine, but apparently when copying them over to the SD card, it ignored that and simply retained the album and track title information. windows 7 ultimate 64-bit.

from this point forward, i've set my options to include the track number as part of the name when ripping from a cd (01-trackname, 02-trackname, etc). so in the future this won't be an issue.

If you are just including a track number in the filenames(to make your_song.mp3 to 0001_your_song.mp3), you don't have to do it manually. A simple shell script (or a batch file, depending on your OS) can the trick for you.

I haven't noticed much advantage to having mp3s on the HDD instead of SD. Both seem to have the same response time and behavior.

It's annoying that 'mix' mode only operates on a folder. If you want to shuffle all of your folders, you have to have a file in the root folder and 'mix' off of that to get all of the subfolders in the mix. Drawback to that is the shuffle highly favors the files in the root folder so you'll hear them come on a lot.

I read there's an RNS-510 firmware update out or out soon. We'll see if that improves the response times or playback behavior.

I have this same issue with 3000+ songs on a USB device. Mix mode seems to sort them by physical location on the device. So whatever you place on the device first is included in the shuffle, but files outside of this range are not included. For example I would only see tracks by artists ranging in A-D. If I placed mp3 files before ogg files, then all the mp3s would be included and some of the oggs.

Update is supposed to be available today, my car is at the dealer for the 4th time to have radio issues fixed, I have little hope at this point. VW Customer care tells me my software is out of date, and the dealer has no idea about any updates. The sad part is that I have provided very specific examples of all the issues, the VW techs have no idea what I am talking about and just want to replace the radio.

I too have my SDHC card organized info folders by Artists / Albums / Songs

How do I get my RNS 510 to mix ALL songs/albums by ALL artists , not just one artist/abum at a time?
Do i need to add another directory above the artists folder called "MP3s" (or my music) and then mix that folder?
I already have the include subdirectories in scan/mix box checked in the options

    thanks

You need to put a song in the root, then play that and mix from there. Make sure the option to mix sub folders is enabled in setup as well.

Be aware if you have a lot of songs on there, that mix will only hit the first few folders. On my system it only ever gets to artists A-E or so. Very annoying and VW doesn't seem to care, telling me that the iPod handles this even though there is no iPod involved.

    Thanks so much!
    works like a charm
only thing is the song appears all the way down at the BOTTOM of the root under all the folders, but it does now Mix all the albums/songs from my SD card.
    kudos

this is a case where vw got a little lazy, just hoping every passat owner has an iphone/ipod and passing the buck to apple.

so why even include an sd card slot on the heat unit? did nobody think we might actually USE that with our entire music library on the card? what happened to german engineering? in this case, "let the americans figure it out."

    tsk, tsk, tsk.
