I don't know what to do with this guy. At first, it was buy and steal the spare windshield, euro bumps, heckeblende, etc...zero to hero on the rest and flip it. Now that I have it, and the shoebox of history it came with...and I'm actually DRIVING it...I'm not sure I can do that. Sellers photos:

I can't justify financially *2* mk1 rocco builds...I can't *not* do it either...oh my. I literally have a shoebox full of records. Original window sticker. Fuel logs. Race logs. This thing was callaway stage 2 at one point. CA car it's entire life (until now). I know when it first had sway bars. Stress bars. Zender kit.

I somehow thought another build thread seemed appropriate...maybe it'll help me sort this out in my head. Maybe not. Maybe I need another hopslam.

It is a slippery slope and you just stepped over the edge.
I say drive it as is for a while, perhaps take it to Cincy, and get a better idea of what you want to do with it, if anything. If you are like most of us you will want to drive it more than anything else you have, especially on long open road drives (stuck in traffic not so much).

at this point, I'm thinking quickie candy white respray and an obd2 aba swap and done.

those thoughts will be different tomorrow.

    and the next day...

the dash is ****...if you want it, it's your Pete. Can't remember what yours was like.

I'd LOVE to sell the 16v lump in one chunk....built longblock, megasquirt, wideband, header, etc...I listed it as a feeler on dubs for $1200. Not in a rush to move it...not even positive I'm going to. It runs GOOD. I'm just too much of a factory guy and just don't trust it. I'd rather something motronic in there...*if* I keep it in there for now, it'll stay until I can drive rocco#1 at which point I'll TDI swap it.

Well my dash is pretty ****ty. It is not warped, but it is cracked to you know what...

Now that I see those RAs I am tempted to just keep mine and say eff the 15x7 wheels:

    What do you think???

I dig em man, I'd hang onto em.

Come check this dash out and take it home witcha. Worst case, you have another that needs recovered, but you can do it while still driving yours. I even bought everything needed to restore one that I'd be willing to sell to ya? Mine is getting wrapped now when I get the interior done.

I saw that thing in it's previous existence a time or two, it was very good to see it's still in the family so to speak.

figured the charging issue out...junk cluster. the whole ribbon is rotten, all 3 layers are separated and shorting together everywhere. Guess I need to find a new cluster...Probably gonna pull the lump and prep for an obd2 aba very soon.

omg the rockers were one huge reason I sold the thing. And to think they were that easy to fix damn. The megasquirt was another reason I sold it so I don't blame you for wanting to take it out. Some people swear by it but it just wasn't for me. Some specs on the motor if Rob did tell you. It's a 2.0 with a home mild ported 1.8 head, and has 278 kent cams, and the crank is pinned because it ripped the key way off the crank pulley has a new pulley that has pins going threw it into the crank for extra strength.

couple of things you may want to know:
The euro bumpers are held together by rust especially the rear, the front cross member is cracked (it had a front cross member brace on it when I sold it but I don't know if he took that off) The full engine harness was removed when I did the mega squirt but if you go obd2 that wont matter.

all in all it's a great car and a great platform to start from. Can't wait to see it progress!

I have the sway bars from that car, me being the 3nd owner some in the early 2000's. That thing was a tire frying fool when I finally hit 12 psi in it. Might still have the Callaway meth injection.

Totally forgot you have Leela now!

If I remember correctly, that pic was shot shortly after Leela came out of the wrecking yard. Over 500 mile round trip, with English behind her wheel for the first time!

Ya, what a crappy design! Never quite understood why they made it like that? The jap cars of the same period used better systems.

A good alternator will self-energize over like 1100 RPMS. I don't even rely on those horrible printed circuit/blue wire nonsense anymore. Make sure you have a good alternator with a non-worn-out regulator and it will be just fine. I've built numerous cars this way with no problem. Many start charging as soon as the car starts without even blipping the throttle.

Nice score, wish I had one of those pinch weld puller thingies!

I had thought that as well, but this one definitely wouldn't. I had to hook up a momentary switch to energize it to make it charge with the old cluster installed. With the new cluster, everything works perfectly. PO had been fighting this issue for quite awhile it seems, too. He had replaced the alternator 3 times, battery, and the battery cables/chargeback wire. Still have to rev it before it starts charging, but it acts/charges as it should now.

    Hopefully getting tags this week.

    finally tagged and insured.

had some fun driving her around this weekend. gas gauge is kinda fluky, need to tinker with that. something loose in the suspension as well. Trying to decide just how far to go with the paint/bodywork, really wanna figure that out today. Can't afford to go crazy with it, but don't wanna do a half assed job either. Somewhere in the middle I reckon...
