I have an 85 Gti 8v. It starts up and runs fine and revs all the way threw in neutral fine. But when driving down ye road once you get to 3200 rpms it's starts to studer and hesitate. Like its skipping in a cylinder. It has brand new distributor, distributor cap, button, battery, plugs, and wires. I'm a little baffled. Any body have any ideas?

Did it do this before the ignition tuneup? Did you retime the ignition properly?

Is the idle stable? Sounds like vacuum leak -- improper fuel mixture.
    I really suck at smog.

How old is the fuel filter? Original?

Yes it did it before the tune up. It started out doing it every once in a while then got worse and died. Replaced all the ignition parts in hopes it was them. It starts fine, idles fine, and revs fine in neutral. Only doing it when actually driving and moving. As for the fuel filter I don't believe it's original but I'll check. It's timed right but I'll also double check that. Also will check all the vacuum hoses cause that sounds plausible also.

I had similar problem, in neutral reved to redline, but in gear at 4000-5000 feels like rev limiter, so I think fuel system was clogged, I used fuel additive & cleaner Redex and after 2 weeks the problem disappeared

Now it won't even start. Might be paying my mechanic to make trek up here soon. 👎
