There is a MDI retrofit kit that can be purchased to control the iPhone....there is a thread on here about it

Okay Thank you! I will keep you posted if i learn more. Nevertheless its just annoying, that VW didnt test to catch these kind of issues

This is a bummer...otherwise I love this car. It's unfortunely really noticeable...going to try to go mono and see how that sounds. Updates would be awesome if anyone finds out anything...

Just bought a 2012 sportwagen ourselves a few days ago. I was pleasantly surprised with the streaming quality until I noticed it was, as others have pointed out, the right channel only spread to all speakers.

Sounds like a vw issue? I'll call the dealer Monday and see what they say. If anyone finds out what to do to resolve it I'd love to know.

Otherwise very happy with the car. The MDI is a little wonky and doesn't play well when Bluetooth is turned on. But audio system issues aside, love the car.

Our and VW's best hope is that the issue is a mis-configured gain setting on one of the channels. Assuming 9W7 settings can be pro grammatically changed, the fix should be easy and dirt cheap.

Otherwise they will have to swap out the 9W7, which part probably costs them $10 in volume.

With dealer labor & logistics factored in, total cost to VW will be around $200 per unit replaced. Will probably be offered to only those that complain of the issue, I am sure 90% of users wont ever notice it.

What we really need is the TSB # if it exists....that way there's something concrete to discuss with the dealer. I'm thinking of creating a garage band track that will switch from left to right and saving it as an mp3 so we can have something to diagnose at the dealership.

No need to create anything. As I mentioned in another thread...

Instead of using music, I would suggest that you use a test file that isolates the left and right channels. Like one of these...

I'm starting to wonder if the TSB does exist.

On the iPhone, you can also go into Settings > General > Accessibilty, scroll halfway down and play with the L/R slider. When you slide Right you hear audio, Left nothing.

(Right above the slider, you can also switch your iPhone into Mono, which is an okay pseudo fix to hear both L/R channels until they get this fixed.)

Your car came with a 9W3 originally (or was wired from the factory to accept one). The 9W3 did not support A2DP stereo streaming or streaming for that matter, so therefore you are missing two wires from the harness under your seat to the back of the stereo. When the 9W7 unit was installed (possibly by the dealer or VWoA mandate since they are being sued over it) the harness was left untouched, and thus you only have one channel audio. There is no software fix. You must run two more wires for it to work.

I just recently built my own bluetooth harness from scratch so the part numbers you need are:

    One: 000 979 009
    One: 000 979 010

Cut the wires in half and make it so you have a 009 (plugs into green plug on head unit) ---------x(solder)---------- 010 (plugs into the 54pin connector under your seat. You need two of these wires.

    On the 54 pin plug:
    Left Channel:
    + is pin 8
    - is pin 9

    Right Channel:
    + is pin 4
    - is pin 5

    On the Green plug:
    Left Channel:
    + is pin 11
    - is pin 5

    Right Channel:
    + is pin 12
    - is pin 6

I listed both right AND left because I am not sure which channel you are missing. IIRC you should be missing the RIGHT channel.

Do you guys think that this is the Issue?
    Experts please post your thoughts.

I swapped out my rcd-510 for a rns-510 ver c ( from 2010 jetta) the bluetooth module is the same 9w7 and nothing other then a plug and play swap plus gps antenna. Guess what ? The bluetooth streems correct stereo left and right from my iphone. The problem must be in the firmware of the new rcd-510. It may be both the new rcd-510 and a new rns-510.( the ones that track foward and show text from bluetooth streeming. The only thing is i do not have track info or controls for bluetooth audio streeming .

Just purchased a 2012 GTI a couple weeks ago. And I can confirm that the RCD-510 only streams right channel audio to all the speakers (I have tried 4 Bluetooth devices). This is terribly aggravating especially when some songs I listen to have only left channel tones moments at a time, so it just goes blank and I hear nothing! Hopefully there will be a radio update that fixes this. I guess I could always reconvert all my music to merge L&R channels. But I guess it won't be true stereo any more. Let's all hold are breath for a fix, because the Aux Ipod cable has terrible quality!

It could just be the coding on the RCD-510. I have the newest version RCD-510 in my Tiguan and the version F 9W7 and I don't have any issues. When I installed the radio I copied the coding from my older RCD-510 and pasted it to the new one using VCDS.

Hugely known problem. VW refuses to do anything about it. I threatened them with a small claims suit, and everything changed. They sent me an RNS-315 to have installed in the car (which has the working Bluetooth) so I wouldn't sue them.

**** Volkswagen. Never again will I buy from this **** company.

This is good news. Were you able to get your dealer to do this swap for you?

Can you provide the part number for the RNS module that you have that works? (if you hold the setup button for a long period you should be able to get to the version info dialog, at least that's how it works on the RCD).

Even being able to show the dealer one that works vs one that doesn't would help me a lot with convincing them of the problem.

Mine does this too and none of the listed solutions have worked. Any other ideas?

-select anything but BT before I turn the car off.....one person said the car will remember what it was playing last for the next time it is started

Niether of these worked. Any other thoughts would be much appreciated.

Technical Bulletin dated Jan 11, 2013
The fix is a software update for the following problems:
"Bluetooth audio runis in mono" (This was the problem in my 2012 Tiguan)
"Media player automatically starts when phone is connected to vehicle"
"Bluetooth audio level is too high"

Update for RCD-510 Radio (Premium 8)
All models except Routan, Taureg, and Jetta Hybrid

The fix takes about 2 to 3 hours for the software to load and update.

My Tiguan finally handles bluetooth audio in wonderful stereo.
Be sure to enable stereo streaming on the iPhone or other input devices. There's a post in this thread for how to enable "Mono"...turn this off for stereo.

There's no hardware required and no dis-assembly of components in the car.
I've been waiting patiently for this fix for six months and watching this thread.
Good luck to all with this problem.

There isn't any TSB or fix for the RNS-510 that I'm aware of.
