I got my car from Honolulu VW. I live and work in town, so it didn't make sense to go to Tony.

I had a great experience at the dealer. I worked with Keone, who seemed to be genuinely interested in the cars and was willing to shoot the **** about them. I managed to get the car, under MSRP, which was surprising. I got a good interest rate from VW credit, which was better than my pre-approval from my CU. It was in July, and the 2012's were on their way in, so there was a 0% financing thing running (1.9% on GTI's). The timing probably helped with the negotiations, since they had a ton of 2011's on the lot, at the time. That also meant that they had a pretty good selection of models/trims.

So far, the Service Department has been pretty good, too. I've ordered parts through them and took the car in to have something looked at. Everyone was pleasant and didn't give me a hard time.

Overall, I couldn't be happier with my experience, and would recommend them.

I've bought 2 cars at Tony. Most recently October. The rep, named Tony was genuine but not VW educated. He taught me stick shift same day on the lot because they were out of dsg in my price range. He came from Mercades sales lot I think. If you have questions you may want to ask on the forum but if you know what you want then I support both the lot and the rep, though I'm not much of a haggler. If you want low price just make sure you walk off the lot and make them call you before you sign papers. I didn't, and I'm paying for it. But the finance guy really helped me out, I asked about the warranty programs I signed for from my 09 purchase and he immediately said he could refund me the proration on that when I trade in. Tony sent me a hefty check on top of paying off my old loan and spending the whole day working with me. I found out later that same finance guy was promoted to sales manager a day after I bought my car so I feel that the lot is in good hands. Ideally you would hit both lots and play them off each other. But I liked my Tony experience.

For what it's worth, I bought my car from Cali and shipped it over here. I was able to save 2 grand on my car AFTER shipping/taxes. Cali dealers will sell cars for next nothing. I played 5 dealers against each other and Was able to get my car for below invoice.

I used USAA financing as a way as my starting point for pricing and worked my way down from there.

Also if you can find a clean 2011 CPO with low miles in Cali and ship it here, you won't have to pay taxes. Recently sourced an Audi A5 for a friend and he saved about 13k going that route.

Yeah, definitely the way to go. The problem here, is the lack of competition. That's why I was surprised that I got the car, for what I did. When you see those "How much did you pay for your car" threads, I feel sick. Like Autobahn trim, for what I paid.

If you haven't already pulled the trigger go see Tommy and Guy Mellow at Tony VW. I've bought 7 cars since 95 from Tony from when they were in Pearlridge ( my stupid Honda days) strayed from Tonys 3 times in between all that and keep going back to Tony. All of their dealers seem to play pretty fair. Hell, I get treatment that probably only 1 or 2 other guys on the Hawaii board get but that's a secret.

Good luck Zaff. Hopefully I'll see you around when you get your mk6. Hopefully its an R and gets the same treatment that your GTI did
