Thread: What is a better "buy"? '98 Golf K2 or '99 Golf CL?

I have a chance to get either a 1998 Golf K2 or a 1999 Golf CL at an auto auction coming up.

I would like to replace my '94 Jetta with a newer Golf, just not sure which would be better.

      K2:
      - power windows
      - heated seats
      - no AC
      - red stitching trim
      - 143,000 kms
      - airbags

but, has rust on the hatch, two cracked headlights, one rusted rocker, small dent in fender, one per windows doesn't work.

      Now the '99:
      - manual windows
      - non-heated seats
      - has AC
      - basic black interior
      - 257,000 kms
      - no airbags
      - missing grill
      - body flawless, no rust or dents
      - BUT, and this is the killer for me, NO sunroof.

I can fix pretty much everything that is wrong on both cars, but I am not willing to add a sunroof, so I am leaning towards the K2, mainly for the lower KMs and sunroof, but the '99 is so perfect body wise.

What makes the K2 so much better than a regular CL? Is a sunroof worth more than KMs over a nicer body?

The K2 will have the creature comforts like power windows etc. The CL is just a base model car, bottom of the barrel dealio. It'll have the 1.8L vs. the K2's 2.0L ABA. I guess it all depends what you'd rather have, what you feel comfortable spending on it, and so on. Are you planning on swapping your 16v into it?

You say the '99 has no airbags. Does that have anything to do with the missing grill? I vote K2.

No, not worth it... VR, one day.

The main reason for my 16v swap was the car came with a crappy 90hp 1.8 mono-motronic engine. The 9A has around 140 hp, so there was a noticeable difference in driving the car... I love the higher RPMs with a 16v.

But the K2 has an ABA, which is around 115hp, so for only a small jump to 140hp, it's not worth the work. I'd just pick up a VR at a junkyard and rebuilt it and swap that in.

Ok, that makes sense. The K2's ABA will hold you over til you get a VR, but the CL will have the same 1.8 If you feel comfortable doing the bit of extra work to the K2, I say go for it it has ALOT less km's, it'll be worth the extra work in the end.

Depends on how bad the rust is, and if you feel like fixing it. You could have a perfect body and if your positive your going to do a motor swap that 1.8 wouldn't matter. But the K2 is definitely the better model

Wow....I was unaware that VW made cars after 1993 without airbags. Now I do...

EDIT: I wasn't taking into account that this was a Canadian model, just that it was a '99, which in the US should have airbags standard. I must have thought, wrongly so, that Canada and the US had essentially the same highway safety standards.

94's in the US didn't have airbags either. I think they became mandatory in 95

GET THE 99. - Cleaner is better

I just got 145k mile, 98 GL. Its FANTASTIC. Needs petty maintenance for now, and runs like a champ all the while. Its rust free and it makes everything BETTER. It's got "more life left" than other mk3s

      I lost both of them...

I was outbid. I'll go back again in a few weeks, maybe they'll have some more Golfs then.

Tell me bout it, some local guys are selling their '94s for $4000 and $5000. I think it's a little much, granted they are nice cars, but still a little high for a 17 yr old car.

It's Kelowna, what did you expect? My VR6 may come up for trade/sale. IDK, I think a small truck would fit me better. I will see, it's been fun to work on.
