Pretty much you just have to call again and again and again....until you reach someone with some kind of knowledge of what they are actually doing. I had the same problem you had, this is also responding the the other post you have in the Travel Link thread. After I called around 20 times, I finally got a person who sent a signal to the radio twice, and then transferred me to technical support, or something like that, and when I was transferred, The guy actually knew what he was doing, and got it to work.
    Hope this helps!

Ok I've seen two different GUIs with the update. Which is the right one?

Mine is on the bottom, and it is done by VW. It is the RNS510 firmware for the passat with red audio, green phone, and blue nav screens. The one on the top must have been done on his own hence the original black/grayscale screen from the CC, Eos, and Tiguan.

You can actually change that in VCDS even for the Passat. I had the red back in Oct. Got my wife's Tig in Dec noticed hers was the black. Searched and sure enough you can change the theme... There is a gray too. Sports line, Highline, and premium I believe were the three choices.

Pretty sure this is not sportsline, and that it is exclusive to the new passat the way they did it. Because if you look at those pictures, they are slightly different, not to mention these are for the new euro passat not the us passat. Unless you can show me an example to prove otherwise..

I'm having the update done now I will find out soon enough. I haven't even tried to mess with radio in VCDS but might look into it if I decide I want the voice control back. One pic is from coffemades post and the other gwernerjr's I noticed the differences so I thought I would ask.

The other service campaign I asked about at the dealer was for the manual. They don't have them yet but he told me it was for the torque spec on the wheels. He said it was 103 ft lbs. can some one confirm that.

Do you have voice control now? For both phone and nav uses? If so you have to tell them to not remove.... The way I read the tech bull is yes it removes the nav and leaves phone...unless u tell them to leave voice alone and just flash the radio as is. Then again some never had had the nav voice commands from the mid year rolling change. There are ways to keep/or add both in VCDS.

Yes I had voice nav but never used it. The idiot at Sirius said I could not use travel link. I figured I wouldn't get the first try Ive others have had the same problem. And my screen has the black buttons across the bottom.

Which before your was red? Then after FW push was black? Anyhow.... Yes you can use VCDS to change theme.

I had the black theme before too. So what all works with the travel link? The menu shows weather info, ski info, gas price, movie listings and all kinds of sports info. Sirius said I could only get Sirius traffic. So I guess I will call again.

After the software update on Monday, my Sirius phone call to get Travel Link lasted 1 hour 20 minutes. All they did was eleminate my Nav Traffic. Now they tell me that 2012 Passats don't have the option for Traffic or Travel Link. The person on the phone googled the RNS-510 update and saw a VW memo about it and believed me. He put in a trouble ticket for me...
That was Monday night (it's now Wednesday afternoon) and still nothing.

I called VW Customer Care yesterday. The person was receptive but offered no solution either. I told her that VW and Sirius management need to get their heads together. This "Customer Satisfaction Update" is not very satisfying.

Turning OFF the clock display also changes the Text Size and look.

The 121 tool way is a great and fast route (an expensive too, maybe like $8 round trip) between Allen and Lewisville dealer.

Well, mistake learned. jejeje let me know next time again.
Also we have METRO VW in Irving.. Service is better due to service manager; Steve is a blessing to work. It has more than 30 years relation with VW. He always eager to please customers and do things right.
Now that I have the firmware it seems VCDS no longer allows access to Bit 7 allowing me to change the color scheme.

I seem to remember reading about changing a VCDS map file is needed but I can't seem to locate the thread. Have you tried this?

Upgrade your VCDS software should update the labels. Try Ross tech site to manually download the file and drop in the /labels sun folder of VCDS should the overall software update not include it.

FYI, same issue with Sirius and trying to activate Travel Link. Spent two hours on the phone with tech support in India. They told me I had a counterfeit unit and they were going to call my dealer.

I am on the phone with tier two now and the guy sounds like he knows what he's doing. I actually gave him the url to this post and he's reading it on the phone with me now.

The problem is that this single ESN shows up as an audio only unit. They do have single ESN units that show up as audio/data, but apparently this batch of ESNs is mislabeled...

Haven't gotten it activate yet, but getting much closer! Hopefully I can get Sirius to take my money.

Oh that's the easy part. They're amazingly adept at taking your money.

Update. Struck out this time. Spent 1.25 hours on the phone and the guy was super nice, but still fairly insistent that something was wrong with my hardware. I kept pointing out that everyone else had the same issue and it was solved at Sirius.

Can the next person who gets this done get the Sirius tech to tell them what they did? Pretty please? That way we can post it here on the forum and at least guide them to an answer.

    SO. AMAZINGLY. FRUSTRATING.

    Sorry, had to vent.

BTW, I had an RNS-510 version C previously and upgraded to the version E with the new firmware. HUGE speed difference in navigation in menus. Love, love, love it. Now just need to get Travel Link working.

Does Travel Link include the live traffic flow update on the map? Previously I paid for that separately.

I received an e-mail today from Sirius' highest level of tech support. The woman I spoke with was extremely helpful. The problem of getting the Travel Link activated still isn't fixed, but she recognized what the issue was and is sending it "to the IT department".

I told her when it got fixed that I'd like a breakdown so that I can share it with everyone else who's been having the issue. Again, I pointed her to this thread and she read through it.

She told me that she's going to get back to me by the end of the week. I'll let you all know.

All in all, a much better day on the phone with Sirius than yesterday.

Well, mine's been at the "highest level" of tech support with Sirius for 9 days as of today. Originally they said 7-10 days... I don't have much faith.

I've even got a case# going with VW of America as well since Sirius continues to say that VW tells them what the radios are and are not capable of in terms of features. VW said today that the person who might be able to help was on vacation till next week.

  26. 05-16-2012 08:08 PM #166
There's a light at the end of the tunnel! A bright one.

My case manager at Sirius said the issue has been identified (a "branding" issue, whatever that means) and they were able to apply audio, traffic, and travel link to my ESN. They didn't push it down to my unit yet because it was too late in the day. She is going to call me in the morning and get it pushed down.

To note: it is absolutely a problem with how Sirius and VW have negotiated the ESNs and how they are marked in the system. Do not bother calling VW.

Here's the better news: she has a full run down of what the problem is and how it can be fixed. After I can confirm that my unit is good to go, I will post the solution and the appropriate contacts at Sirius. She is going to let me know the best way to get everyone who's having the issue a way to get it resolved.

Sirius first level support sucks. Round two with the number in this thread was much better, but in the end the guy was still unable to fix the issue. After Sirius contacted me and directed me to a third support group, things got better immediately. The Sirius rep even said, "you've already done all the troubleshooting; I can clearly see what the issue is."

I have nothing but praise for the people who I have worked with today, and the rep was happy to help get the word out so that people in this thread (and hopefully others) can get things activated correctly.

Hang on one more day and I think it's going to all be fine.

Still havent had a chance to take my new 2012 SEL Premium in yet to get the RNS510 updated from 3680 to 3690

Just wanted to be clear though, what do I have to tell the service guy to make sure I get the Sirius Travel Link availability activated with the update? (and of course the faster button response time, which is the main reason to update the firmware), since it seems there are 2 choices

You don't tell him anything. The dealer updates the software making all the updates present in the radio. Then you have to call Sirius and have them add Travel Link to your Sirius account. That's where the fun begins that most of us on this thread are talking about.

The stuff at the dealer is easy.

  29. 05-17-2012 11:16 AM #169
    It works!

OK guys, IT officially knows of the problem AND the fix. They are looking for a system-wide fix.

I can confirm they got everything up and running for me and all the traffic and travel link data is there.

They are still figuring out the best way to get people on this thread connected to the people who can make the fix before it gets down to the tier-1 folks. I hopefully can get you all an update on that.

I went from hating the customer service at XM to loving it. They have really gone above and beyond to get everything straightened out.

A quick screenshot of Travel Link on my way home from NC. It was incredible how well it ll worked and how useful it was. The radar is updated every five minutes.

I'll take some pics of the other functions shortly

I especially like the ability to find diesel prices when traveling. You can see not only the best price but the date of last purchase.

The RNS-315 will show diesel stations, but not prices. Is Sirius charging extra for these services on top of the monthly fee or special rates?

Yes, TravelLink by itself is $1.99/month. Bundled with Traffic is $5.99/month. There are annual and multi-year plans according to the site.

We have the RNS-315 in our 2012 Golf TDI, the problem is not all the diesel stations are accurate. For example I did a search in the Golf for nearby diesel and it pointed me to a local Costco. I know for certain no Costco in my area sells diesel.

The RNS-510 will lead you to the same dead end when using Nav alone, TravelLink lets you know for certain that a station sells diesel by listing the price and last purchase date.

I have tried Gas Buddy while traveling and not all stations that sell diesel are listed.

I save that much a month easily by finding better prices for diesel. I can also monitor stations in my area by purchase frequency to determine the fuel turn over rate.

Not surprisingly the top tier stations, also the top priced, have the lowest frequency of purchase. Places like Walmart (Murphy USA) have the highest turn over and the typically the lowest cost.
